Fulbright Project Objective 1 - Music Technology

+

Teaching computer skills to musicians,

especially commercial quality manuscript

production, digital recording, editing,

and processing of musical performance,

and website creation, especially website

development containing media content of

photos, audio, and video, are of utmost

importance to worldwide university level

music students. The student’s ability to

promote oneself with media content on a

personal website is the most efficient and

current means to publicize one’s music.

The inclusion of music technology in U.S.

degree plan curricula has not been

adopted world wide, and has limited the

international student from achieving

artistic recognition on a global level.

Knowledge of music technology enriches

the individual student’s productivity with

a solid approach to global distribution. At

Texas State Professor Hehmsoth

undertook a major assessment and

developed academic curricula regarding

the music technology component in music

degree plans in order to qualify and

receive NASM (National Association of

Schools of Music) certification.

Objective 2 –

Performance -

Classes in contemporary jazz

improvisation, harmony, theory, and

ensemble performance will nurture

innovative creativity and individual

knowledge in music that exceed the

core lecture and study in traditional

classroom settings. Interactive music

workshops are live master class

lecture settings with examples of

American jazz harmony, melodic

development, contemporary form,

and performance as its basis.

Objective 3 – Commercial

Arranging/Composition

Classes in orchestration for film, big

band arranging, and small ensemble

writing for beginning and advanced

students. Private lessons with select

students. This approach will

familiarize the student with the

prerequisites for working with video

and film, including synchronization,

and working with directors.

Project Impact on

Host Institution

This Project is a creative and

innovative type of academic

exchange, and expresses an

American approach to traditional

music course content. This Fulbright

project will provide students at

Instituto Profesional Projazz the

opportunity to build skills necessary

to compete in the modern world of

music. Strong performance and

writing skills, coupled with the

increased technical expertise to

promote oneself on the internet with

rich media content, will enable

students to reach their goals, be

successful, and rely on ideals,

intellectual freedom, and creativity to

demonstrate common aesthetic

values, and increase their Chilean

connection worldwide. This is the

stated Fulbright mission: Opening

Minds to the World.

Institute Director, George Abufhele

and Fulbright Specialist Hehmsoth

have discussed conducting an

assessment of the institute’s

curricula, with the implementation of

new education materials, and to

provide consultation in faculty

development.

Hehmsoth recently developed a new

graduate course in jazz arranging,

and generated a new Masters in Jazz

Performance degree at Texas State,

which has been approved for spring,

2013.

Project Potential for

Institutional Linkages

Texas State University is currently in the

process of creating an institution

partnership with Instituto Profesional

Projazz. Texas State University School of

Music has a newly created study abroad

faculty-led program for 2012-2013. The

Fulbright Project coincides with the new

graduate program developed and

planned for Summer II, 2013. Professor

Hehmsoth will help inaugurate the first

exchange, and the Fulbright Project is

primary in maintaining the new reciprocal

exchange agreements with Instituto

Profesional Projazz.

A new Affiliated Program is being

developed and offered by Instituto

Profesional Projazz and now has an official

agreement with Texas State. Texas State

affiliated programs are selected based on

the host credentials, commitment to

academic quality, health and safety

practices, and reputation in the

international education field. This

Affiliated program enables Texas State

students to study in Chile through Texas

State-sponsored programs.

The new Exchange program will operate

through a formal agreement between

Texas State and partner university

Instituto Profesional Projazz. This

agreement will allow Texas State students

to attend the classes and receive degree

credits for one or two semesters.

William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB), the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (ECA), and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), it is a pleasure to inform you that you have been approved for candidacy on the Fulbright Specialist Roster. The Roster is a list of all approved candidates who are eligible to be matched with incoming program requests from overseas academic institutions for Fulbright Specialists. As a candidate, you will be considered a potential match for program requests that require someone in your field with your expertise. Please be reminded that candidacy on the Roster is not an assurance of a grant. For more information, please review the Roster Candidate web page at http://www.cies.org/specialists/.
