6 WELCOME

Last year the international community passed an ambitious international climate protection agreement. The agreement is aimed at reducing greenhouse emissions and therefore also greater climate protection in the transport sector. Even before the climate change agreement was signed by more than 190 states, Germany led the way with a Climate Action Programme 2020 and the Climate Protection Plan 2050. The German Federal Ministry for Transport has also chartered an important course for climate protection in the area of transport with the early initiative for the mobility and fuel strategy and organising accompanying professional dialogue.

This is why the focus of the ‘Fuels of the Future’ conference in 2017 is on how greenhouse emissions can be reduced in the transport sector while simultaneously safeguarding existing resources. This is set not only to be discussed in the opening plenary but also to be a main theme in the different specialist forums.

The future focus of EU policy will thus also be crucial. Here there will be many different approaches that are discussed, e.g. a higher tax, tolls or new consumption tests. In principle, the climate protection targets can only be reached if all options are exploited to reduce greenhouse emissions in a way that embraces new technology. This also includes undertaking to reduce greenhouse emissions from fuels and to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources such as biofuels.

Here, the increasing diversification in drive technologies and the production and use of renewable fuels are a challenge and simultaneously the key to achieving climate protection targets in the transport sector. Consequently, the conference programme will in future be giving greater emphasis to the topic of drive technologies.

We are therefore calling for the development of an ambitious European strategy that goes beyond the year 2020 in order to establish the reliable framework and competitive conditions for investors and a stable environment for investing in more climate protection in the transport sector.

With over 500 people expected to attend again in 2017 as well, the international specialist conference ‘Fuels of the Future’ is one of the most important forums for discussing current issues of international biofuel policy, research and technological development. We are thus looking forward to your involvement!
