The Editor’s Beat

When Groundhog Phil saw his

shadow last month, it was supposed to mean six more weeks of winter, but it’s already too hot for jeans at the races and it’s not even spring, yet. Maybe Bike Week will be hotter than ever this year!

W ith the halfway point behind

us, we’ve started preparing for the end of the season and the banquet. If you are able, volunteer to serve on the Banquet Committee and get involved in putting together the celebration - it’s our last year for the Disney Hotel, so let’s go out with a bang. There are a lot of ideas floating around about how to make the banquet better and if you have any ideas, let your voice be heard! This time of year is always a great time for FTR because we see such an increase in membership with all of the northern riders coming down to train before their season starts.

I f you are out and about this Bike Week and happen to snap a picture that you think would be magazine-worthy, send it to the editor! And thank you to everyone who shares with FTR Magazine on Facebook and Twitter. - JS

Kyle Keylon:

I’m trying to learn how Charlie (Mullins) and all those guys train,” Kyle Keylon told FTR Magazine. “I don’t know how to

train for the woods. I don’t know if they go out and just ride for two or three hours and try to make it like a race....I’m trying to learn all that stuff to know what I gotta do to be

as good as new.

Tristian Schoelles: Ride with faster people and just think about going faster and how fast you can go through something. Works for me

Vitor Vasconcelos: I usually try to hit some local trail at “race pace” for as long as I can. Take breaks here and there. Also try to ride my bicycle at least 10 miles every time I can.

Jessica Gill: Find some woods or even just some sand. Sand gives you good balance that way

you’re ready for anything! Good luck

Scott Dawson: I know for a fact a lot of them mountain bike, a lot! road bike too pavement scares me. As much cardio as you can cram in. Then, rest.

Shelby Dunson: Cross train.....Mountain bike, run, and lots of core exercises. Then you can ride with people who are faster. Stay with them as long as you can. You can build from there. I will be honest it takes a lot. Some people are just more naturally talented. Keep chipping away at it and you will get faster.

Chris Wise: Take Shelby’s advice coupled with lots of seat time and motocross riding. Motocross makes me faster in the woods, for sure

Bill Pitts: I haven’t figured it out yet...

Jack Steele: Don’t do what I am doing, I am getting slower.

Lee Daley: Tell him to ask his Dad!

Jeffery Smith: Eat clean

train dirty

Kelsey ODonnell: Ride, Cardio, Ride, Ride some more and when you do ride, ride stuff you wouldn’t normally choose to ride if you were riding with friends on a trail ride. Ride the tough stuff; ride the nasty stuff, and then carb load the night before the race and pin it to win it :-)

Chuck Piper: The bicycle won’t fix the problem and I see something about a carb load; this is not the secret.

Derek Winship: My tip is to finish the race ride till the checkers fall and you will get better. No way to practice for race conditions.

Editor’s Picks: 7 Things To Know This monTh (FRom The FTR FoRum and elsewheRe)

Keith Finnerty: AMA DUES GONE UP - If everyone does not know AMA Dues are now $49 for a new membership. Until 3/31/2012 you can renew your Membership for $39. They will allow you to renew for up to 3 years That will make a savings of $30 if you plan to be a motorcyclist for the next 3 years!

Raymond Burr: Work - If you work a event, how does it all work out, (points, admission, requirements)? Any info will help.

Kevin Vaughan: With a work credit you get points equal to your best finish without any advancement points. You will pay the

gate fee to get on the property but no race fees required. As far as requirements, that is up to the hosting club. Some clubs require working both days, others(most) just require you work one day. The club will assign you a job and verify that you actually worked and report it to scoring.

Daniel White: There are 4 pieces of info on the scoreboard.

- Total Time You’ve been racing- Place and time behind the person in front of you, or it’ll say LEADER- Your Class, bike number and background color and possibly something I must never look at as I can’t remember the other piece....

I also can’t remember which spot on the scoreboard each piece of info shows because I can only process 1 piece of info per lap. Here’s how I use the scoreboard:1St lap - what place am I in?2nd lap - how long have I been riding (so I can figure out if I have 1, 2 or 3 laps left)Rule thumb for second lap “figuring”If I’m under 48 minutes, I have 3 laps left.If I’m under 1 hour, I have 2 laps left.If I’m under 1:20, this is my last lap.If I’m over 1:20, just stop as I can’t complete another

lap anyway unless I really hurry... and I probably won’t! Or go ahead if I’m still having fun as I get to ride a free lap!3rd lap - typically my last or second to last. If my last, where did I finish. If my second to last, do I have enough time to finish another lap.

Easy rule for this, if I’m under 1.5 hours, I can finish another lap. Typically, we only run 4 laps so if there’s a chance for a 5th, I just go for it! One race, I actually got 6 laps in so I was just confused and kept riding until someone told me to stop. Hope this helps.

Shawn Webb: When you go through the chicane on your first lap, what info shows up on the digital board?

4David Francis: I thought the auction looked like a great success, I purchased a bunch of tickets and although I won nothing, it felt good to help out a fellow rider. Well done to those that were involved in running the auction.

The American Motorcyclist Association recently elected Ken Ford, a lifetime FTR member (and former FTR President, Vice President, Enduro Chairman, Scorekeeper and Land Use

Chairman) as member representative on the AMA Board of Directors for the Southeast region. Ken spoke with FTR Magazine about his reaction to the

election and how he plans to bring more of his offroad perspective to the AMA Board of Directors:

“It’s a pretty big responsibility. Hopefully I can do a good job for the Southeast AMA members. I have been appointed as the chairman of the finance committee. I have also been appointed one of the board

representatives to the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation Board of Directors. My function is to be a liaison for the AMA staff and the

Southeast. I hope I’m going to do a better job of keeping the Southeast AMA members more informed with what’s going on at the board meetings as it impacts their activities. My background is offroad riding. I still ride dual sports and adventure bikes so my heart is with offroad riders. I’m a member of Dixie Dual Sports and ride quite a few of those.

And, as a life member, I get the FTR magazines every month. I keep track. What I want to do is put together, probably a quarterly newsletter, on what’s happening at the AMA and how does

it impact the Southeast riders. Going back to my days in FTR, we never had any contact with AMA. A lot of people wonder what is AMA doing for me and why do I belong,

so I’m hoping to alleviate that a little bit.”

Bobby Springer: Lights and Plate -I’m looking into doing an Enduro or 2 down here, and was wondering if any are like the Nationals (closed course, no need for lights or plate). If not can i get away with battery operated head light with a bicycle red light to clip on the rear fender? (I have an ‘sx’ version KTM) As for the Plate how strict are they. Does it have to be for your bike or just need the correct “papers”Thanks.

Kevin Moyer: The Alligator Enduro runs the same format as the nationals, checkin-checkout. No lights or plates required.

Gary Wyatt: It is best to call the person who is listed on the flyer as a contact person for the club to get “specific” information.

Robert Frey: If you’re planning on riding a non-closed course, its my understanding that running a tag belonging to another vehicle and not belonging to the particular bike is a felony here in Florida... just an FYI...

Larry Roberts: Very true. Better to not have a plate than one assigned to another vehicle.

Cameron Hannon: Missed Log Crossing Class - Will there be another? At Brooksville there was a seminar on log crossing. We were told that it was for mostly the big bikes. So we didn’t attend. I thought I saw 65 size bikes there and wish we had not missed it. My son would have learned a lot from the class. He has trouble with log crossing. Is there any more of these classes log or other planned. I did see the Raines class but they are during the week and we can’t make it.

Mike Belle: That was my son Jonathan teaching the class. He’s not able to attend all of the races right now due to school, but may

be at the Ona, Gatorback, or Dade City races. I’m sure he would be glad to give Cameron any instruction he needs one on one if you can catch him at an event. I’m sure Cameron would appreciate

getting instruction from a young “AA” rider like Jonathan more, but if he gets desperate I’m sure I could teach him what he needs

to know since I used to ride trials competitively and taught Jonathan most of the basic technical skills!

Steve Clark: Yeah, I went over to check out that log crossing seminar, I was the only “big bike.” It was all little kids. Rhey had a great time! Then, after,

we went out to “the log” for me, Jonathan showed the kids how to go up and down steep hills. They were having a blast! I thought that was great that he did that for them.I bet it was there highlight of the weekend...

ENDURO FilesHere it is almost March and the Enduro season is almost

half way over. This weekend will be the Straight Arrow

Enduro and by the time you read this, it will have already

passed. So far, we have had a great season. Mother Nature has

been good to us and let’s hope she continues to do so. Broxton

Bridge in January was a great event. If you didn’t make it up

there, you missed probably one of the best events of the year,

and this was an event that almost didn’t happen as it was added

after the season started. The weather there was great, crisp and

cool to start the day - you could see your breath when you walked

outside. By the time key time rolled around, it had warmed up

just enough to lose the steam off your head. A long sleeve Under

Armor and a jersey and I was all set. The race started off with a

medium length warm-up section to get us going - it was a little

more than a warm up for some, namely me. Then, we were into

some tougher a d tighter woods sections where most of the faster

guys were able to get thru without any points. The next section

got a little tougher and tighter leading up to the real test , a 14-

mile long tight technical section that really took some points for

us older slow guys.

The next section wasn’t quite as bad, still taking some points but

moving along a bit faster. The last section caught some of us tired

and worn down and got a little tight again to really separate us

out. All in all the trail conditions were great and even though the

event was tough, it was also fun, that’s the way I like them. At

the end of the day several of the nations top riders were there to

compete in this event, Russell Bobbit, Mike Lafferty, and others

where there just to keep in shape for the Nationals starting at the

end of January.

For the FTR points, Hunter Williams came out ahead of Tyler

Tramell by 2 points. Lee Daily made the best of Jeff Flick in the

Old Man A class (master a) and Thomas Cole finished of Cliff

Golby in the Real Old Man A class (Golden Master A.) Jack

Allen took Senior B honors while Bret Long took top sport in the

Super Senior B class. In the Old Man Slow class (Master C), Ken

Stephenson showed his B class skills by taking the honors ion his

class. All together I hope everyone had a good ride and most of

all had fun, I know I did.

Looks like Richloam will be a good one this year as well. Not a

lot of rain ‘til the week of the event and then not enough to put it

under water like times past. I hope all of you who came out and

rode this event had a great time and those of you riding your first

Enduro, I hope you want to continue to enjoy the thrills of riding a

60 plus mile event.

We have several good events ahead on the schedule, The

Sandlapper has always been on of my favorite out of state events

and this year it will be a national, that means the FTR gang will

get to try their skills against the top riders in the nation. Good

luck to everyone going to this event. Alligator will be next up for

us and that will be another chance for us to compare ourselves

with guys from all over the country and the world as this event

brings out people for around the world as part of the Bike Week

events.

So, for all of you riding Enduros this season, thank you for

keeping the sport alive and best of luck to all of you. I hope it

continues to grow and get back to where it once was a premier

sport in the FTR. See ya on the trail. - cary Hunt FTR Enduro Chairman

who: Florida Division of Forestry.

what: We got volunteer group of the year. Volunteer groups consist of organizations that deal with the State Forest and maintain the trails that go through the State Forest. Because of the ongoing work that we’ve been working on in the last couple years to try to help separate the mountain bike trails from the dirt bike trails, so we would have out own trail system, and we finally came up with a plan and worked out a program where we could separate those trails. We worked hard to try

to get those trial separated and we finally did it. whErE: The Croom tract of the Withlacoochee State ForestwhEn: We got the award in late January. There was a luncheon that was held at the recreation center and they presented us with that award. how: We were extremely excited to be awarded with that honor. All of us worked hard to work out a program that everyone could live with - both the mountain bikers and ourselves and when we finally reached that goal and not have a conflict, it was very exciting to be able to accomplish something we’ve worked so hard for.

Richloam ENDURO

I haul my lazy butt up to the staging area at 0830. Why? I could sleep in because I registered yesterday! So I unloaded, started talking to John North who was parked next to me (John’s a

Sumter County Deputy) and we bench raced the whole time while getting ready...

Soon, it was time to start... Here’s how it went...

0925 and our row is off!I get about 100 yards into the woods, start wondering what I got myself into, got hung up on a log (not the last!) wound up looking down at my scorecard and noticed I wasn’t scored out of the start! So, I booked off the trail over to 471 and back to the start to get scored. Once again I’m starting 5 minutes late! (What makes it worse is that I looked in the wrong box and they did indeed score me at the start!) D’OH! From there. it was out on the same trail again! This one dumped off onto Cabbagehead and I would rather ride Cabbagehead when it’s flooded. Today, it was absolute hell! The trail then went off and came back a few times and I was passed by a Yamaha. Damn! So, I follow the Yammy and we make a wrong turn, I loop and, BAM, I’m back ahead of him. From here, it was a beautiful mixture of forest roads and single track. Beautiful, yes, beating me up, yes, but then I stuffed a KTM in a corner going into a trail section and that made 2 passes today, starting to feel something brewing inside! After a few more miles I come to the check up on Center Grade. Computer said I had an average speed of 6.7 mph. This ain’t gonna cut it. The first section killed me!Check the route sheet, check the clock, hey, I’m only 10 minutes down! And then a Husaberg passes me. Oh, Oh, no, he didn’t! And a race broke out! It wasn’t long, probably a half-mile, I took him on a trail section. Oh, yes! The 690 was rockin’ the world, Baby! So, before the check I was struggling, wondering what I was doing out here, and then I found THE groove. Some of you guys know what I’m talking about! Everything was going right. Now, I was pulling second and third gear through the single-track sections and everything was going fine! I get to the crossing at North Grade by the airport and Jeff and Art were waiting there, checked the sheet and my time: I’m averaging 1 hair over 10 mph now. My speed is increasing! Only 15 minutes down!I cross the road, run down the airfield and into the woods again. BAM - secret check! Sweet! I’m dropping time and gaining speed and off into a trail section FROM HELL! So far, I’ve been through palmetto hell, tight scrub sapling hell, and now Cypress Knee Hell! It was a struggle for sure; miles of cypress knees and logs. The trail led into a controlled burn area. The smell of smoke was fresh in the air, and soot from the fires painted the trees and the tall palmettos black. But what made it special was this one 20 yard section: the undergrowth was burnt away, the palmettos were

about 6 feet tall and bowed out, leaving a natural trail between their bending trunks and then after appreciating that was thrown into yet more log crossings followed by more and more trails dumping out at another check and then a short jaunt down the road to the gas stop! I made my goal! To make gas! and I was only 30 minutes down with a 20 minute reset. I took a break, Rocky tossed me some H2O and I chugged some water, ate an apple and some carbs, DRIVER sprung into action filling my tank, and tossing some ice on my neck to cool down. Bert, although jovial and with a good sense of humor, did a quick hand check. No shakes, but my left pinky was wobbling a little - still got miles left in me!Back into the woods with 5 minutes banked, put me 25 minutes

down, then the stumps, gawd, I don’t like stumps especially in tall grass with log crossings. Did I mention stumps? So let me get to the part you’ve been waiting for, hereafter known as Section Bee. It’s disappointing really; here I was riding well on a bike too big that’s beating me up. I catch the next check and STILL only 25 minutes down! I’m finally up to pace! Gas it out of the check, a hard left just ahead, adjust my line and

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

YELLOW JACKETS! And they started to sting; then they started getting into the opening in my helmet.

Instinctively, I tried to swat them away from my face with one hand, grabbed a handful of throttle to try to get away, clip a tree with one hand on the bars, spin around and down I go, complete with what seems like hundreds of my new found “friends”!I yanked my leg out from under the bike got up and started swatting and smashing them as I tried to lift the bike and get away. The stinging continued. I did get going slowly down the trail over roots and trees and palmettos, trying to hold on and swat more at the same time. Eventually, about a half mile down, I realized there were no more travelling with me. I was exhausted, and was starting to get chills. My ride was over. I gotta get out of the woods! So, I followed the arrows until I got to a woods road, followed the woods road ‘til I saw more arrows going down another woods road until I came to a reset I passed about long ago and wound up riding past the gas stop again. It was now vacant except for markings and I continued down East Grade to South Grade until I ran into Stubb, Rock, Lisa and Keith. I had a water, almost fell off my bike, climbed on the tail gate and rested.Seems the stings were all on my left side and were burning. Then they showed up AGAIN! While I was sitting there! To make a long story shorter, I felt better, got on the bike and headed back to the truck. All-in-all, a great day. From the trees, the sand, the roots, the knees, the stumps the logs the palmettos. Excellent day riding. Challenging, no doubt, learned some lessons, experienced how great the DDS Crew is and how we’re a caring family! Excellent day indeed! - RF

“We enjoy helping our friends at CFTR with this event, since these are the same woods we use for our Devil’s Creek Dual Sport event! We need to support each other to promote Responsible

Hello FTR Family,

Do you feel like you are in survival mode? I know I feel that way. The past four races have been right at

500 miles round trip each for our family. Fortunately, by the time you read this, the remaining races will be a little closer to our home. I heard some distressing news this morning. The reports are, that by the end of April fuel will be over $4.50 a gallon. What? This is insane! I hope they are wrong. It is hard to believe that we can be excited to pay $3.50 a gallon for fuel.

Enough of that depressing stuff, is there any good news out there? Yes. My heart was warmed with a couple of conversations at a recent race with two different fathers. Both of them told me how important the Florida Trail Riders series is to them. No, it was not because of their standing in the points. It was not that they could come and hang out with their friends; though that is a great thing to do. It was because it offered a quality time in which they could bond with their children. Each man shared what a sacrifice it was for them to be there at the races. It takes time, money, and commitment. However, both men told me that as long as their children were interested in racing and as long as it was possible for them to do it, they would be there for them. Why is that important? Because they recognize that children are the future of FTR. Not only are they an extension of whom we are as a parent but

when we are too old to make the trip to the events they are the ones that will make the decisions regarding FTR’s future. Yes, we will probably have a Super Senior Golden Master Platinum Class for the 85+ riders one day. However, there will only be a couple guys in it and odds are they won’t care about the future of FTR… only their own.

On a sad note, if you have not heard, Gary Rorstrom passed away in February. Gary was a Master A rider. He had been involved in FTR for many years. I was asked by his family to officiate his

funeral. Though I had known Gary only from a distance, the turnout at his funeral on February 7 spoke volumes about the friendships he shared with so many. Please continue to pray for this family as they adjust to the void that is now in their life.

Lastly, please continue to pray for Chris Tolken and his family. They are very grateful for all you have done for

them. They are so appreciative to the FTR Family.

In Proverbs 15 a wise man once said: “The LORD is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous… Light in a messenger’s eyes brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.” Let me encourage you to think on these things.I’ll see you on the line. Your friend,Andy Dickson

I met JP last year at the end of the 2011 season through his mother, Tammy. Tammy had some camera questions for me, and then I had some questions for her, like: “Who are you taking photos of?” And that is when I met JP. JP is a very quiet young man who likes to let his riding speak for him.

I think that this is what made me curious as to who he is and what he is all about. I have had the pleasure of speaking with him on a few occasions, and I would like to share some of my impressions with you:

The Wilson’s are a family of five: Jeff, Tammy, JP and his two sisters, Amanda and Rosie. They live in Vero Beach, Florida. JP is 19 years old and works five days a week with his father, who is a mason contractor and works in the construction

business. His mother looks after her son’s best interests, in general, like only a mother can. It truly is a family effort, which is what FTR is all about.JP started riding at 4 years old and raced up until the Mini A class in FTR. At that point, he wanted to try other things and decided to get involved with the local 4-H Club and worked with livestock - steers and swine - and also did some hunting with his father. After 6 years, he felt that he missed riding dirt bikes and got back involved in FTR racing.Like all of us, it is hard to get away from dirt bike riding once it is in your blood!JP was motivated to ride by Garrett Edmisten, who also helped him learn how to ride well. JP really looks up to him. Of his goals, JP told me that he would like to earn a national number in the GNCC series. He also mentioned that he feels it will be a lot of hard work to get his goals accomplished and looks forward to the challenge. He is aware of the sacrifices made by his family to be able to do what he loves: race dirt bikes.

If you have had a chance to watch JP ride, you may have noticed he is very comfortable on a dirt bike. It is apparent he is having fun, and this is the main reason he does it. No grand expectations, he just wants to be the best he can be.JP is currently riding in the Open A class and is running at the front. He is hoping to take his talents to the GNCC series this year and give it a try.

tEn quEStionS From g2 G2: Tell me about your riding history?JP: I received my 1st PW 50 for Christmas when I was 4 years old. First time on it, I ran into a barbed wire fence. I rode with Clayton Schlitt, Garrett Edmisten and Kyle Meeks. At age 6, I was at the Loretta Lynn MX Nationals in the Oil Injected Shaft Class on a PW50. I placed 21st. I went to Dallas, Texas and rode the KTM Jr. Supercross in 2000-2001 - 11th place. My 50 cc bikes have been PW50, KTM and COBRA. In 1999, I started riding the FTR series. I rode PW 50, 65, MINI, 85 and some motocross. I took off six years and started showing steers and swine in 4-H. I was gone from 2004-2010. In 2010, I started back riding. I started out riding in the C class because I didn’t know how I was going to do riding from being gone so long. I rode C Open on a KX 450 and Evo C on KDX 200. I was promoted from the C class into B and then promoted to the A class all in one year - guess I didn’t forget how to ride. I rode my first the GNCC at River Ranch in 2011 and placed second in B Open. This was challenging because I had no front brakes halfway through the race. I finished up the FTR 2010-2011 Championship Series winning first place in Evo B and second place in B Open.

G2: What is your training schedule like?JP: I work five days a week with my dad in his masonry company so I’m outside a lot. I dig footers, pour concrete and tote concrete blocks. I’m in the heat all summer long so I think this helps my racing during the summer. I swim in our pool. I have a track at my house and ride at

least three days a week. Friends will come over and ride with me. I ride my mountain bike, ride the Aerodyne bike. I eat healthy and drink a lot of water. I take vitamins and hydrate well before a race and after a race.

G2: What kind of bikes do you ride and why?JP: My Evo bike is a 1986 XR 600. I like the way it feels; it’s a Honda and reliable. I ride in A Open on a 2011 KX 450. I like the reliability of Kawasaki and the support Kawasaki has for their riders.

G2: Why do you ride the FTR series?JP: I have ridden in the FTR series since I was little. We had a lot of friends who rode dirt bikes in the series. When I came back to riding, I knew this was the series I wanted to be in. It is very family oriented, safe; it’s a good series. The banquets are really nice. I like the trail riding and honest people. I have made many friends along the way and friendships that will last a lifetime. Seeing all the supportive families is important. FTR is a great stepping stone and will help me with the GNCC.

G2: What is your favorite type of track and why?JP: Sand, palmettos, rough terrain. I like these conditions for a track because it is challenging and gets more interesting lap by lap.

G2: Do you have any other interests besides riding? JP: I like to airboat, hunt (deer, hog, duck and turkey) and fish. These interest me because it’s another opportunity to be outdoors.

G2: Tell me about your family life and all of the other people who help support you?JP: I have a wonderful mom and dad along with two sisters, all very loving and caring, which anybody would love to have. My sisters are Amanda and Rosie. They are older than I am. My sisters and I have had many different ideas throughout childhood, which our parents have always supported our decisions along the way. We all have made good decisions. My sisters took the 4-H road. I tried it and didn’t like it, and

24 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | March 2012

went back to riding.

G2: Do you have any advice to someone just starting out in this sport ?JP: Make sure you HAVE FUN. Always use the right safety equipment, “never get on a bike without all your safety gear on”, practice riding, respect your fellow riders, ride smart, treat others like you want to be treated RIDE! RIDE! RIDE!

G2: How would you like to be remembered in FTR ?JP: As a legend in my own time.

G2: Is there anything else you would like to say?JP: I would like to thank the people who have helped me along the way. The Lord for keeping me safe and watching over me.TF Racing Suspension for all your continued support and allowing my bike to ride like I’m floating on a cloud. G2 Photos for his support, this interview and believing in me and my family. Answer. Action Kawasaki. Lynwood anf Cristy-Rae Ansley for being a very good, supportive family. Bobby Edmisten for helping work on my bikes. Garrett

Edmisten for teaching me riding skills. Mom and Dad for your checkbook and all their sacrifices along the way. Last but not least, “QUITTERS NEVER WIN, WINNERS NEVER QUIT.”

Well, there you have it. A brief glimpse in the life of JP Wilson. JP Wilson is

a humble young man. If you have not had the pleasure to meet JP, please take the time to say hello. His calmness and modesty will make you want to see him achieve greatness. The Wilson family is a great example of what FTR is all about. FTR is such a family oriented sport. There is so much there for us all: friends, family and competition. All of which help to make a rounded life.In closing, I would like to thank FTR for allowing me to get to know the Wilsons and to express another reason why I am a proud member of such a wonderful organization. Best of luck to the Wilson family. May all of your dreams come true.

*Abridged interview with Ronnie Monk

on Kyle Keylon:It’s hard coming from the supercross and motocross side where those guys are only riding for 20 to 30 minutes. He’s gotto realize that you just kind of have to take it slow and let the track come to you. But he’s learning. It’ll come.

Six 12 SportS

If you’re not able to be comfortable on the bike, it’s not even really worth having fun on.- Six 12 Sports owner Ronnie Monk

who: 612 is actually the number I raced with growing up. My dad used to run Pro Action South East, so pretty much from the time I was 13,14 years old, I was working with him, working on bikes and learning the ropes.

what: Once my dad started teaching me everything, what goes into the suspension and the set up, basically from there, it was ‘01 or ‘02 when he was wanting to get out of it and he asked if I wanted to take over the company. I overtook the business but just changed it to six twelve and I’ve ran it ever since...It’s just me. Sometimes, I have people come in

and help when I get swamped like Troy Adams worked for me last year. It just really depends on how busy I get.

whErE: I have a box truck that’s totally set up to do mobile stuff and I have a shop at my house out of Dade City, just north of Tampa.

whEn: I’m broadening out and I’m wanting to hit the majority of the Hare Scrambles... When I grew up racing, we always did 3 or 4 (FTR Hare Scrambles) a year. I really enjoy the people and the atmosphere so that’s why I really want to start doing more of those. It’s a lot more laid back and more about getting back to the riding and it’s more fun.

why: I really enjoy being able to educate them on the suspension side of things. I really like to be able to show them. There’s a lot that we can do, between setting the sag and setting clickers. You’re not going to have fun when the bike is not set.

That’s when it becomes enjoyable

how: Easiest way is to just give me a call at (813) 714-2038. Or visit the website at Six12sports.com. I’m also set up on hookit.com, so if they want to get sponsored, they can go through there.

laSt thing: Six12 StickErS on kEylon’S BikE. what did you do to hiS SuSpEnSion?Kyle was riding for supercross and outdoors, [which is] too harsh and too fast so for our Florida riding. Everything need[ed] to be slower and softer so basically that’s a lot of it and valving wise. The number one this is you have to make sure you have the right springs under the bike.
