  • IntroductionThis manual contains detailed instructions on the operation and maintenance of this machine. To getmaximum versatility from this machine all operators should carefully read and follow the instructions inthis manual. Please keep this manual in a handy place near the machine.Please read the Safety Information before using this machine. It contains important information re-lated to USER SAFETY and PREVENTING EQUIPMENT PROBLEMS.

    Notes:Some illustrations may be slightly different from your machine.

    The model names of the machines do not appear in the following pages.Check the model of your machine before reading this manual.(For details, see pages 1)

    Only connect the machine to the power source described on theinside front cover of this manual.

    Avoid multi-wiring. Do not damage, break or make any modifications to the power

    cord. Do not place heavy objects on it, pull it hard or bend it morethan necessary. These actions could cause an electric shock orfire.

    Do not plug or unplug the power cord with your hands wet. Other-wise, an electric shock might occur.

    Make sure the wall outlet is near the machine and freely acces-sible so that in event of an emergency it can be unplugged easily.

    Do not remove any covers or screws other than those specifiedin this manual. Some parts of the machine are at a high voltageand could give you an electric shock. When the machine needs tobe checked, adjusted, or repaired, contact your service represen-tatives.

    Do not take apart or attempt any modifications to this machine.There is a risk of fire, electric shock, explosion or loss of sight.

    If the machine looks damaged or breaks down, smoke is comingout, there is a strange smell or anything looks unusual, immedi-ately turn off the main switch then unplug the power cord fromthe wall. Do not continue using the machine in this condition.Contact your service representative.

    If metal, liquid, or foreign matter falls into the machine, turn offthe main switch, and unplug the main power cord. Contact yourservice representative. Do not keep using the machine with a faultor defect.

    Do not put any metal objects or containers holding water(e.g.vases, flowerpots, glasses) on the machine. If the contents fallinside the machine, a fire or electric shock could occur.

    Do not incinerate used toner or toner containers. Toner dust mightignite when exposed to an open flame. Dispose of the used tonercontainers according to local regulations for plastics.

    Keep the machine away from humidity and dust. A fire or an elec-tric shock might occur.

    Do not place the machine on an unstable or tilted surface. If ittopples over, it could cause injury.

    After you move the machine, fix it with the caster fixture. Other-wise, the machine might move or come down to cause a personalinjury.

    When you move the machine, unplug the power cord from thewall outlet to avoid fire or electric shock.

    When the machine will not be used for a long time, unplug thepower cord.

    When you pull out the plug from the socket, grip the plug to avoiddamaging the cord and causing fire or electric shock.

    If you use the machine in a confined space, make sure there is acontinuous air turnover.

    Do not reuse stapled paper. Do not use aluminium foil, carboncontaining paper or other conductive paper. Otherwise, a fire mightoccur.

    When removing misfed paper, do not touch the fusing sectionbecause it could be very hot.

    This machine has been tested for safety using this suppliers partsand consumables. We recommend you only use these specifiedsupplies.

    Do not eat or swallow toner. Keep toner(used or unused) and toner containers out of reach of

    children.

    This equipment is only to be installed by a qualified service per-sonnel.

    Energy StarAs an Energy Star partner, we have determinedthat this machine model meets the Energy StarGuidelines for energy efficiency.

    The Energy Star Guidelines intend to establish an international energy-saving system fordeveloping and introducing energy-efficient office equipment to deal with environmental is-sues, such as global warming.This products was designed to reduce the environment impact associated with copyingequipment by means of energy-saving features, such as Low Power mode, Auto Off mode,and Duplex Priority.

    Low Power ModeThis copier automatically lowers its power consumption 1 minute after the last copying jobhas been completed. To exit the Low Power mode, press the {Clear Modes/Energy Saver}key. The copier returns to the ready condition in about 30 seconds. (Type 2 and Type 3 returnimmediately.) To change the Low Power delay, see page 97 Low Power Timer.

    Auto Off ModeTo conserve energy, this copier automatically turns off 90 minutes after the last copying jobhas been completed. To exit the Auto Off mode, turn on the main switch. To change the AutoOff delay, see page 97 Auto off.

    Duplex PriorityTo conserve paper resources, the Duplex function (1-Sided fi 2-Sided) is selected preferen-tially when you turn on the main switch, when you press the {Clear Modes/Energy Saver}key, or when the copier resets itself automatically. To change the Duplex Priority mode, seepage 96 Default Setting.

  • 8PANEL DISPLAYThe panel display shows operational status, error messages, and function menus.

    Importanto Do not apply a strong stock or force of about 30 N (about 3 kgf) or more to the panel display.

    Otherwise, the display might be damaged. Note

    o The function items displayed serve as selector keys. You can select or specify an item bylightly pressing it.

    o When you select or specify an item on the panel display, it is highlighted like .o Keys appearing as cannot be used.

    Displays And Key OperationsThis machine has two types of initial display: Normal and Program 10. Program 10 isenabled at the factory.

    n Factory set initial display (1-Sidefi 2-Side is selected whenever the copier is reset.)

    1. Display function items. When you select an item, the next screen appears under these keys.2. Displays operational status or messages. It also displays the number of originals the

    copier has scanned.3. The number of originals set and the number of copied sheets are displayed.4. The types (paper size and orientation) of the paper set in the paper trays are displayed.5. The preset reduce/enlarge ratios are displayed.6. The options that can be selected in the sort/stack/staple/punch functions are displayed.

  • 97. [Check Modes] appears when you set a function. To check a set of items you set up, press[Check Modes]. The settings you made will then appear.

    large capacity tray (LCT) installed.o You can display only the function items you are going to use or commonly used function items

    with higher priorities (initially selected). See page 99 Select feature display & prioritysetting.

    o You can have paper type displayed on the panel display when you set a special type of papersuch as cover, slip sheet, or recycled paper. For the cover and slip sheet, you can select themode in which the paper type is always displayed or the mode in which the paper type isdisplayed only when Cover/Slip Sheet is selected. See page 99 Select Special tray.

    Viewing the Guidance WhilePerforming an Operation

    1 Set a function.Select [Staple Top], for example.

    2 Press the {Guidance} key.A description of the staple will appear.

    Press the {Guidance} key to get a descriptionof a function or its operating procedure. Youcan make use of the guidance in two ways. Inone way, you press the {Guidance} key onthe Copy mode panel display to open the guid-ance menu and select the desired description.In the other way, you press the {Guidance}key while performing an operation and reviewthe associated operating procedure.

    1 Press the {Clear Modes/Energy Saver}key to return to the initial display.

    2 Press the {Guidance} key.The guidance menu will appear.

    3 Press the function key associated withthe function you want to know about.

    Auto StartYou can make copy settings and press the{Start} key when the message Please Waitis on (The {Start} key flashes in red and greenalternately). This function is called AutoStart.

    Auto ResetThe machine returns to its initial conditionautomatically after your job is finished, aftera certain period of time. This function is calledAuto Reset.

    Noteo You can change the Auto Reset time. See

    P.97 Auto reset.o The machine might not reset itself auto-

    matically in the following cases: Originals are left uncopied. The machine senses the presence of a

    human body.

    Screen SaverThe machine automatically clears the paneldisplay after your job is finished, after a cer-tain period of time. This function is calledScreen Saver.

    Low Power TimerThe machine enters the energy saver modewhen you take no action for a certain periodafter your job is finished. This function iscalled Low Power Timer.

    Limitationo Set the original after correction fluid and

    ink have completely dried. Not taking thisprecaution could mark the exposure glassand cause marks to be copied.

    set at a time, divide the originals into sev-eral blocks and set the blocks sequentiallystarting at the last block.

    o When copying thin originals (41 - 52 g/m2, 11-14lb), set one original at a time inthe document feeder or exposure glass. See P.25 Thin Paper.

    This function erases all four sides of the origi-nal image.

    Noteo You can specify the wide of the border to

    be erased within the range of 0 - 20 mm in2.5 mm steps (0 - 0.8" in 0.1" steps.)

    o The initial erasure width is 5 mm(0.2" ).You can change this initial value. See P.99 Erase Border Width priority setting.

    o Use the Erase Center/Border function tospecify the width of the top, bottom, left,and right borders individually. See P.61ERASE CENTER/BORDER.
