PAGE TWO

YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàÉÜËá Wxá~ There’s always a lot to cover in my bulletin articles, so I hate to spend time addressing a rumor, but this particular one is so erroneous that it needs to be corrected. A few weeks ago I gave a talk at all the weekend Masses, updating people on where we are in the RenewMyChurch (RMC) process. One point that I explained was that we are currently waiting to ind out which parishes will be assigned to our group (and many times I have emphasized that every parish in the Archdiocese will be placed into a group, so that in itself does not indicate that a parish will be closing). I had said that the groupings for all parishes will be announced sometime around the beginning of December. That is what I have written and spoken on several occasions. However, some people have apparently heard this differently. One rumor that has been going around is that I said that our parish is closing on Dec. 31st. Now, I hate to even write those words because they are absolutely not true. I honestly don’t know how people could have come to that conclusion based on the information that I gave. So, let me irst put that rumor to rest: we will NOT be closing on Dec. 31st. As I explained in print and from the pulpit, nothing will happen to the parishes in our vicariate for at least one year, and even after that, this will be a multi-year process. And please keep in mind that, of the four possible outcomes for parishes in RMC (which I have already explained), three of the outcomes do not involve closings. If you have any questions about anything related to RMC, please ask me directly, especially if you think someone might be giving you bad information. And if you have questions about other parishes’ situations regarding RMC, please ask the pastors of those parishes. In other words, please get your information from the source, and not from the rumor mill. On a more positive note, I’d like to offer a few thank-you’s. First, I’d like to thank two parishioner families who stepped up to help our parish in our time of need. In the past few weeks we were faced with two emergency maintenance situations. The short story is that the boiler in our school building needed major repairs (it basically needed to be rebuilt on the inside). We use the school building not only for Religious Ed., parish meetings and parish functions, but we also rent half of the building to a tenant, and that rental income is crucial to our budget. So, we need heat in that building. In addition, we found that the north side of the church roof needed all new lashing because water was getting in underneath the old lashing, running through the ceiling and dripping through the lights during heavy rains. These two major (and expensive!) repairs hit us at the same time, and because our Sunday collections are always under budget, we knew this would be a struggle. Thanks to very generous donations from Tim & Pat Sullivan, and Concetta & Leonard Klimko, we have been able to address these issues. I’d like to thank them and all our generous parishioners who support our parish. I would also like to thank our Knights of Columbus and all who volunteered to help with their 5th annual Polish Dinner last Saturday. It has always been a great success, and that is due not only to the dedication of the Knights, but also to all of you who attend each year. Thank you! Finally, I’d like to let you know that there’s a chance you might see me on TV this week. I had the opportunity to be an extra on the TV show ChicagoFire. I play a priest (surprise, surprise!) of iciating at a cemetery service in one scene. I don’t know for certain if I’ll make it into the episode, but I think there’s a good chance. If I do get on, I should be easy to spot – I’ll be the one dressed all in black! And incidentally, we shot the scene in September on a 90-degree day, so hopefully I won’t look like I was sweating too badly! The episode will air this Tuesday, Nov. 15th at 9:00pm on NBC. St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now.

St. Vincent often asked the simple question: “What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my

Place now?”

Ask yourself “What would Jesus Christ do?” and then put your gift in the Society of

St. Vincent de Paul poor box so that those suffering will be able to celebrate

Thanksgiving.

Altar Servers Wanted!

The St. Beatrice altar server program is looking for new servers! The requirements to be an altar server is that you must be at least seven years old and received your First Communion. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

With Thanksgiving approaching, we think of the quest of the Puritans who arrived on the Mayflower from their first exile in Leyden, Holland. Like the Catholics of England, they were religious dissenters who suffered penalties for not participating in the worship life of the established church. The Catholics established monasteries, schools, and convents on the continent to assure the vigor of their faith’s intellectual and spiritual life. The Puritans fled to the tolerant Netherlands with similar hopes of preserving their way of life, but were unable to adapt to Dutch ways. There were Catholics who made a similar colonial journey. The hero of the story is George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, the former Secretary of State of Britain and a Catholic. He proposed that King Charles I establish a proprietary colony that he would own and rule, named Maryland in honor of the Catholic Queen Henrietta Maria. George Calvert died unexpectedly in the midst of this project, but his son Cecil faithfully carried out his father’s wishes. Maryland became a symbol of freedom for wealthy recusant English families, as well as for the poor who held to the Catholic faith despite great hardship. From the start, the colony was open to Protestants and Catholics equally, and the seeds of the religious freedom so dear to the American spirit were sown with the first colonists in 1634. —Rev. GOD’S HEALING JUSTICE An old expression holds that the sun-warmed stone heals. Perhaps. But Malachi explains that only dark, sunless days are in store for those who do not find a place for God in their lives. Conversely, he tells us that the warmth and light of God’s healing justice await those who fear the Lord. That’s a pretty comforting notion—especially now in the already short and growing even shorter days of November. It’s the sun-warmed stone, and then some. Paul speaks to us of justice as well, but points out that it is not a passive thing. To be treated justly, we need to do our fair share. If we are diligent and persevere we will be rewarded with and by the fruits of our labor. Lastly, Luke, too, tells us to persevere—in faith, this time—and our lives will be secure in God regardless of how we are treated by our enemies. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

What We’re Learning All Saints Day We learned that All Saints day is the day the Church honors all the men and women who have lived holy lives and are now in the presence of God in heaven. We learned there is a lot of variety among the Saints. Some Saints contributed great writings and are called Doctors of the Church; others had visions of God or Our Lady and had other special experienced and are called Mystics; other Saints gave their lives for the faith and are called Martyrs.

All Souls Day We learned that All Souls day is a day to pray and remember all those who have died. We learned that Purgatory is a place that souls go when they have died in friendship with God, but are not yet ready to enter heaven. We learned that the prayers and sacrifices we offer on their behalf can lessen their suffering and help them get to heaven.
