Finding your way ...From your first day at Frostburg to Commencement day, you’ll have the opportunity to live what you learn.And we love bringing your academic studies to life. “Hands-on learning” is a huge part of what we do here at Frostburg, and it takes on as many meanings as you can think of:

y Science majors of all kinds conduct valuable, relevant research alongside faculty mentors and present their results at national conferences.

y Business and marketing students create plans for actual businesses – and some even start their own!

y Mass Communication students practice on state-of-the-art equipment in our new TV and radio stations, more modern than what many commercial stations have. Some students even host their own TV shows or radio programs.

y Student writers publish their work in academic journals, literary magazines and more and present in venues ranging from open-mic poetry slams to national conferences.

out there. You’ll get the chance to learn in TV and audio studios that have the same

equipment you’ll find in the broadcast industry, or you can experiment with the latest

3D printers. The building hosts an amazing multimedia learning center complete with a

planetarium and rooftop observatory. You’ll also find extensive computer labs throughout

the building and 14 breakout rooms fully equipped for collaborative work with your

fellow students.

But wait, there’s more!Frostburg has outstanding facilities and technology for you in just about every department.

Specialized labs for robotics, nanotechnology, biotechnology, renewable energies and animal

behavior are just the beginning. There’s a greenhouse, an herbarium, a centrifuge, electron

microscopes, a wind tunnel, GIS and GPS equipment, a walk-in growth chamber, remote

sensing software. … The list goes on!

And here’s the best part: While using these facilities, you’ll work on projects and research that

have a real impact on the community around you, from Frostburg to the world.

Don’t forget the arts! Actors, musicians and dancers will love our Performing Arts Center’s three performance

spaces: an acoustically perfect recital hall, a drama theatre and a black-box theatre. Practice

Frostburg students travel the world – and the world comes to Frostburg, too. Nothing broadens your mind like seeing the world through another’s eyes. At

Frostburg, you’ll get to meet students from all over the world – from Morocco

to Taiwan, and Ireland to Peru – each with unique and valuable lessons to

teach you even as you share your world with them.

And it really is possible to travel the world, no matter your resources

or time frame. Frostburg offers many ways to study abroad, for a

few weeks to a semester or year, and often for the same cost as

FSU’s tuition. Plus, through Frostburg’s Center for International

Education, you can access scholarships dedicated just for

traveling students. Your FSU financial aid even applies to many

international study programs.

Serving in remote villages in Uganda and Peru, learning about

Ecuador’s indigenous people, interning in a school in Denmark,

touring a factory in China – these are just a few of the adventures

FSU students have experienced.

Frostburg is one of the country’s most environmentally responsible campuses, and we’re only getting started. Frostburg State has just about every aspect of the environmental front covered. On the

academic side, you can choose from an ever-expanding list of eco-aware programs,

including a minor in sustainability, or prepare for a master’s in applied ecology and

conservation biology. Outside the classroom, you can take part in our Focus Frostburg

sustainability awareness day and other environmental events sponsored by the Learning

Green, Living Green initiative and the Sierra Student Coalition. FSU also has set up a

car-sharing service, a green alternative to bringing a vehicle to campus.

It’s no wonder Frostburg’s been listed in The Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges

and lauded as a top sustainable “Cool School” by Sierra Magazine.

Green facilities where it counts.FSU is home to the Sustainable Energy Research Facility – an off-the-grid center for

researching renewable energy sources. The Lane University Center and the new Gira

Center for Communications and Information Technology are LEED Gold-certified for their

green design and operation.

Nutrient cycling in action!Chesapeake Dining Hall now features “The Rocket,” a quick-composting machine that

helps turn food waste into loamy compost. Frostburg Grows, a greenhouse complex on a

former strip mine, uses that compost to grow healthy, local produce for the community.

And Chartwells, FSU’s food service provider, completes the cycle by serving Frostburg

Grows fruits and vegetables in the dining hall and by actively seeking produce from

local farmers.

EXPERIENCE SUSTAINABILITY.

The Frostburg Grows Project converted unused mined land into an innovative 5-acre

greenhouse complex producing fruit, vegetables and tree seedlings. 13

Western Maryland’s mountains are perfect for studying nature – and enjoying it, too.In fact, Frostburg is the only U.S. university to offer a major in ethnobotany, the scientific study of

relationships that exist between people and plants. The surrounding Allegheny Mountains provide a

wealth of resources for studying plants and animals – and geology, geography and environmental

sciences as well.

The great outdoors are a part of life at Frostburg, where there’s a beautiful view in every direction. You

can commune with nature with a stroll through the campus arboretum or take a hike or bike ride just

minutes away on the Great Allegheny Passage. Or simply choose a favorite shade tree as a place to study.

Multi-cultural Show

With more than 90 clubs and organizations, it’s easy to get involved at Frostburg.You can choose from a variety of major organizations like the Student Government Association, Black Student

Alliance and University Programming Council, as well as academic societies for many majors and a never-ending

collection of special interest clubs, from creative writing to snowboarding to runway fashion! And if you can’t find

just what you’re looking for, Frostburg makes it simple to start your own organization. How will you get involved?

Going Service. Student volunteers at Frostburg provide over 40,000 hours of service each year, doing good for others by shoveling snow for the elderly, mentoring local grade-school youth, helping out with tax forms and caring for shelter animals, just to name a few activities. They are also passionate participants in major local and national events like Hunger and Homelessness Week, the Special Olympics, Beautify the ‘Burg, V-Day and Relay for Life.

Going Greek. FSU proudly hosts chapters of several nationally recognized fraternities and sororities. Getting involved in campus Greek Life is a great way to serve your university and community while building some lifelong friendships and connections.

band concerts, national speakers and authors, illusionists and so much more! The

Cultural Events Series brings in professional performers ranging from comedians

and symphony orchestras to Broadway stars and dancers from Bollywood or the

Moscow ballet. Homecoming and Springfest are always fun, and if you’re still ready

to go, the University also sponsors trips to destinations like New York City, ski resorts,

whitewater rafting sites, museums, shopping outlets and more.

The Lane University CenterLocated in the heart of campus, the Lane University Center is a hub of student social

life on campus, a place where friends meet for everything from meals to midnight

parties. Here you’ll find bake sales, karaoke, cozy lounges and the monthly “Late @

Lane” events, one of the most popular parts of student life. Every “Late @ Lane” has a

different theme, so there’s always something new!

Debra Monk ’73 got her acting start at Frostburg. Now she’s a Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress. She has appeared on Broadway and in feature films and TV shows, including Glee (as Will’s mother), Grey’s Anatomy, Law and Order and Desperate Housewives.

From Baltimore and east: take I-70 west to I-68

west (Exit 1a) at Hancock, MD. Proceed to the

second exit for Frostburg, Exit 33. Bear right onto

Midlothian Road and proceed about 1 mile to the

main entrance to the FSU campus.

From Morgantown, WV, and west: take I-68 east

to Exit 33. Turn left onto Midlothian Road and

proceed about 1 mile to the main entrance to

the campus.

Finding the Admissions OfficeOn Midlothian Road, you will pass the

Appalachian Laboratory, the University Drive

entrance, Bobcat Stadium and the Cordts P.E.

Center, all on the left. Turn left at the arched

campus gateway and make an immediate right.

The building on your left is Pullen Hall. Park in

You’ll feel at home in Frostburg. Frostburg, Maryland, population about 9,000, is a vibrant small town with a bustling main street district.

Within walking distance from campus are numerous cafés, restaurants, pizza shops, and convenience

and specialty stores. Free shuttle buses take you to nearby shopping malls and other attractions.

weekends a year (see dates below) where you’ll

get to speak with FSU students and faculty, tour

the campus, attend an athletic event (schedule

permitting), and learn about many more options

that will introduce you to Frostburg.
