Abstract
In India 'ultiple regulations for food have %een enacted at different points of ti'e to supple'ent
each other. This incre'ental approach has lead to incoherence and inconsistency in the food sector
regulatory scenario. The Food )afety and )tandards $uthority of India *F))$I+ is an autono'ous
statutory $uthority set up under the Food )afety and )tandards $ct, #!!6 for laying don science %ased
standards for articles of food and to regulate their 'anufacture, storage, distri%ution, sale and i'port, to
ensure availa%ility of safe and holeso'e food for hu'an consu'ption. The $ct ai's to esta%lish a
single reference point for all 'atters relating to food safety and standards, %y 'oving fro' 'ulti-level,
'ulti-depart'ental control to a single line of co''and. The Indian food industry appreciates the %enefits
of the $ct and loo forard to its i'ple'entation of the specific provisions.
