FSOP EMBARKS ON A UNIQUE INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP
For the past two years Dr. Marcos Oliveira, an Associate
Professor at the Feik School of Pharmacy and a native of Brazil,
has been engaging Brazilian pharmacy schools. His focus was on
developing new opportunities for UIW Pharmacy students, as well
as Brazilian students. Dr. Oliveira targeted institutions that shared
similar values to FSOP of faith, service, innovation and education.
In summer 2012, Dr. Oliveira began a conversation with
administrators from a Catholic faith-based university in Brazil,
Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Parana (PUC-PR) and Prati-
Donaduzzi, a Brazilian pharmaceutical company.
An FSOP team, comprised of Dr. Marcos Oliveira, Associate
Professor, Dr. Eli Phillips, JD, Assistant Professor and Dr. Kevin
Lord, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, went to Brazil in March to seal the agreement with PUC-PR and Prati-
Donaduzzi. This agreement will afford 8 FSOP students annually the opportunity to engage in an elective
industrial rotation in their P4 year. “This is a unique venture within the U.S. pharmacy school arena, which has the
potential for multi-directional outcomes for FSOP, PUC-PR, and Prati-Donaduzzi,” said Dr. Arcelia Johnson-
Fannin.
The first eight recipients chosen
for this program were announced
at the FSOP Awards Banquet and
Rites of Passage Ceremony on
April 10, 2013. Francisco
Junqueira and Joselina Manfio
from Prati-Donaduzzi awarded
certificates to the first eight
FSOP students during their fourth
year of study.
The students will participate in
an FDA/ANVISA regulatory
course that will involve all three institutions, followed by experiences at PUC-PR and Prati-Donaduzzi.

FACULTY AWARDED MULTI-YEAR NIH GRANT
Dr. Amanda Sharpe, Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Science, is a co-investigator on a
5-year National Institutes of Health research award that was recently funded by the National
Institute on Drug Abuse. The grant, entitled “The role of dendrodendritic dopamine
neurotransmission in methamphetamine abuse,” is a collaboration with Dr. Michael
Beckstead, principal investigator, at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. The
grant proposes to combine electrophysiological, pharmacological and behavioral techniques to examine alterations
in dopamine cell synaptic functioning that occur in the early stages of methamphetamine use and may contribute to
drug addiction. The grant project is funded through November 2017 for a total of $1,647,000, contingent on
satisfactory progress of the project and future availability of funds.
FSOP FACULTY RECEIVES PATENT
Dr. Donald Sikazwe was awarded a U.S. patent (#7,700,587) for developing an analog
drug based on his 2004 dissertation-related research on the antipsychotic drug
Haloperidol. Haloperidol is an inexpensive older drug (introduced in 1950’s), and is
very effective for alleviating positive or overt symptoms (hallucinations, delusions,
etc.) of schizophrenia. However, chronic usage of this drug leads to tardive dyskinesias
(permanent movement disorders) in patients, due to its biotransformation to neurotoxic
quaternary pyridinium species which accumulate in patient’s brains.
Dr. Sikazwe’s patented analogs of Haloperidol were designed to avoid the this
biotransformation, so that the drugs are eliminated from the body harmlessly and
without adverse side effects.

PHI LAMBDA SIGMA TAKES THE LEAD
For the third year, the Gamma Xi chapter of PLS again offered their mentor-mentee program. Designed to assist P1
students just entering Pharmacy school by pairing them with upperclassmen, 96 of the incoming P1 students this
year participated in the mentoring program.
The chapter’s Leadership Workshop Series offered four events to support FSOP student success throughout the
year, beginning with a Resume/CV Workshop. Guest speakers were Dr. David Trang, Vice-Chair and Associate
Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Mr. Brent Thacker, Regional Director of H-E-B Pharmacy, and 80 first through
fourth year students participated. The
second event was a collaborative effort
with SNPhA, with an invited guest
from Target Pharmacy speaking about
improving interviewing skills. Spring
events included an Information
Resources Workshop, and a Leadership
Development Workshop featuring guest
speaker Ms. Julie Mitchell, Walgreens
District Pharmacy Supervisor.
On February 23, the Gamma Xi chapter inducted eleven student members and three faculty members. Inducted
members represent those who have demonstrated leadership and a commitment to excellence in the pharmacy
profession.
TPA PATIENT COUNSELING COMPETITION
The Texas Pharmacy Association Patient Counseling Competition was held at FSOP in March. First place went to
Ms. Amanda Zessin (P2), second place was awarded to Kim-Ly Nguyen (P3), and Roderick Sanchez (P3) received
third place. Students could use their award monies received toward traveling to the state-wide TPA Patient
Counseling Competition in July.
RHO CHI REFUGEE HEALTH FAIR
A health fair was organized for the refugee population of San
Antonio on Feb 23rd
by the Delta Eta chapter of the Rho Chi
Pharmacy Honor Society and faculty member Dr. Sushma
Ramsinghani. Pharmacy student leaders were instrumental in
organizing the health fair that was held at the UIW northwest
campus.
About thirty pharmacy students, supervised by faculty preceptors
Drs. Amy Witte and Elizabeth Urteaga, provided health screens such
as blood-pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and diabetic foot exam.
In addition, vision screens were provided by students and their
faculty preceptor from the UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry, and
dental hygiene screens by students from the Concord School of
Dental Hygiene. The visitors were also provided information about
nutrition and medical conditions such as heartburn and chronic
kidney disease.
tudent News: S
The students had the opportunity to practice their skills in an interprofessional environment. Bilingual and multi-
lingual pharmacy students facilitated communication by interpreting health screen results and healthy lifestyle
information. About thirty-five refugees were served at this health fair.
INDUCTION CEREMONY FOR RHO CHI
On April 2, 2013 in the UIW Rosenberg Sky Room, new members of the
Delta Eta Chapter of the Rho Chi Society were initiated. Dr. Nicole Farrell
was the event’s guest speaker. Rho Chi faculty advisor, Dr. Jason Cota,
and Rho Chi president, Christopher Mowen (P3), gave words of advice and
congratulated the new initiates. Installation of new officers installation was
also conducted.
TUS MEDICINAS Y TU SALUD UNIVISION /WALMART HEALTH FAIR
FSOP faculty Dr. Tina Lopez and Dr. Vanessa Phillips, in conjunction with four
School of Nursing faculty, led the successful Tus Medicinas y Tu Salud
Univision/WalMart Health Fair held at the St. Phillips College Center for Health
Professions on April 20th. Over 350 primarily Spanish-speaking clients were
screened and educated on a wide variety of health topics. Special screenings for
children were offered, as were cooking demonstrations to promote wellness. The heavy participation by area
residents is an indication of the importance of this type of community service event for the under-served population
in this sector of San Antonio.
This event was an excellent example of professional collaboration, encompassing students from the UIW
Pharmacy, Optometry, Nursing and Nutrition programs. RN students from UTHSCSA and LVN students from St.
Phillips College were also participants. Two more health fairs are being planned for this fall.
