PREFACE
TheJapaneseFamiliarizationandShortTerm(FAST)CourseisoneofaseriesofsimilarforeignlanguagecoursesproducedattheForeignServiceInstitutethatareintendedtotrainU.S.Governmentpesonnelassignedtooverseasposts. TheobjectiveoftheFASTCoursesistohelpstudentsacquirethecommunicationskillsnecessarytodealwiththemostcommonsocialanddailylifesituationstheywillencounterduringtheiroverseasassignments.Languageformsadequatetosatisfypersonalneeds"how-to"informationandculturalhighlightsarepresentedinaformatthatwillencouragestudentstotryoutandusewithconfidencethelanguageskillstheyhavedeveloped.
TheoriginalversionoftheJapaneseFASTCoursewasdraftedin1981byTetsuoKumatoriyaandMariTakahashiunderthedirectionofMadelineE.Ehrman.Thesematerialswereeditedin1985byJohnB.RatliffIIIandHedyA.St.Denis.BasedonobservationofstudentperformanceandcommentsofbothstudentsandinstructorsatFSIthecoursehasbeenextensivelyrevisedoverthepastseveralyears.Mrs.TomokoTanakaCampenSeniorInstructorintheFSIJapaneseSectionhasbeendeeplyinvolvedinthisworkalongwiththeteamofinstructorsthatsheheads:MiyukiFogelMasaloGonzales-MonteroMasaloNantoandSetsukoPfeiffer.ThomasE.Maddenassistedwiththedesignandlay-outofthecamera-readycopyandCorneliusC.Iublerwasresponsiblefortheeditingofthefinalversionofthecourse.
TheJapaneseFASTCoursewasdesignedasasix-weekintroductorycourseforemployeesanddependentswithimminentassignmentstoJapanwhoareunabletotaketheregular44-weekJapaneseBasicCourse.ItshouldbenotedthattheFASTCoursedoesnotattempttopresentasystematiccomprehensiveintroductiontoJapanesegrammar;insteadbitsandpiecesofthegrammararepracticedandexplainedastheyappearnaturallyinthedialogs. Inviewoftheemphasisontheimmediatelypracticalandtheamountoftimeavailablealllinguisticexplanationshavebeengreatlysimplified.

AJapanesenameconsistsofthefamilynameandthegivennameinthatorder.ThefamilynameisfarmorefrequentlyusedinJapanesethaninEnglish.Firstnamesareusuallyusedonlyamongintimates.OrdinarilytheJapanesedonothavemiddlenames. NamesinJapanesearealmostalwayswritteninChinesecharactersorKanjiandcertainKanjiarefrequentlyusedincommonJapanesenames.ThereforeitwillbeeasierforyoutorecognizeJapanesenamesifyouknowtheseKanji.

Japanesesyllablesreceiveapproximatelyequalstressandtimenomatterhowmanyorhowfewconsonantsorvowelstheycontain.Thesimplestsyllableconsistsofasinglevowelandthemostcommontypeiscomposedofaconsonantandavowel.
