Stair poster promotes use of stairs for health (Submitted by Kendall College of Art and Design) Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University has released a stair prompt signage design to promote active living in Western Michigan. Graphic images promoting healthy behavior have been shown to motivate stair users, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The message in the signage, “Get Healthy, Save the Earth, Take the Stairs!” also points to a greener option, the stairs, over energy- consuming elevators. A stair week is planned for early September to raise awareness. According to national research on health-promot- ing architecture, six studies evaluated the relationship between people’s perception of the environment and physical activity. Overall, the median improvement in some aspect of physical activity was 35 percent given a perceived safer, inviting environment. In active building design research, men who climbed at least 20 floors per week (four floors per work day) can lower their risk of stroke and death from all causes by 20 percent.• FHS school board member honored by United Way (Submitted by United Way of the Lakeshore) United Way of the Lakeshore celebrated its 2011 achievements with a crowd of about 250 at its annual meeting on Thursday, April 25. Cloverbud, the fair’s budding new division for children ages 5-8, gears up for its most exciting year yet. With enrollment doubling every year, the division will showcase 24 children and their horses, up from 11 last year. Achieved increase in enrollment can be attributed to our reputation mentoring kids whom would like to get involved with horses. The fair begins Tuesday, July 23rd ending on Saturday, July 27th. The Cloverbuds will be showing their horses Wednesday at 9:00 a.m., July 24th. Come support your community’s youth and have a good time doing it. Kids who come down can meet livestock, see the horses, and even go into the arts and crafts barn. 3rd year of Cloverbuds (ages 5-8) Crafts, livestock, horses July 24th Cloverbuds will be showing horses.
