et involved! Those people canhelp you. These are your newbest friends. Welcome to the

    best years of your life.

OK, now that thats over, Ill say thathis issue wont be much of a resource.Theyd probably like it to be, but wewont dwell on the boring niceties ofour introduction to Western.

    Youll get that.

    Youve gotten it.

The mitZinemight even have it for youater. Just not in your Frosh Issue.

n a way, what weve given you here isperhaps the best resource you can have.Because, like how you have literallyntered a new phase of your life, you

have also entered a new worldview MIT.

Fair warning: people wont get you.Theyll ask you, Whats MIT? andou might not even know what to say, xcept to clarify that its the Canadian

one. Sometimes you might prefer tojust let the strangers think you studyin Massachusetts. Either way, deningFIMS is half the fun.

This new worldview is often hard tograsp. So this issue might help with

breaking you in a little. Tearful goodbyes, drive-in movies, cottaging in the sun, part-time bitch work forget all that happened inthe Summer of 2011. Outside ofthose boozy goodbyes and your oor-scraping for cash in the early morninghumidity, a lot of other stuff happenedtoo. Sometimes we just ignore it. MIT iswhere we learn to notice it.

What happened in Norway? Whatsgoing on in Syria? Who is Rupert

Murdoch? Why do we care about theCanadian Federal election? And how didWill and Kate make it onto both of ourlists? Consider the summer for the Westmight be better named The Summer ofthe Riot, or depending how you look atthe Vancouver and London riots, TheSummer of Facebook Policing.

Sometimes things are a little easier tonotice, like Harrys swansong and Amys

fade-to-black. MIT is where we learrethink those things. As fun as OxygThe Glee Projectwas (or wasnt; canI tuned in), maybe theres more toinnocent faade (or reign of terror)is Foxs Glee.

In this issue youll nd your sumIt might look a bit different than remember but thats MIT.

Youve had this happen to you,I know. Youre at work orpainting the house or doingsome chore and suddenly

ou look at your hands and there areplinters in it. Your hands have gotten

grubby, that kind of dirt thats sohard to wash off. It feels like the dirthas worked right into your skin. Andunder all that dirtsplinters. Theyredug into the skin, causing little burningrritations, getting redly infected.

The other morning I woke up andealized my hand was full of splinters. I

dont mean just the annoying or painfulone or two that bug you, that make youwince every time your hand brushesgainst something, I mean dozens of

he things. Sticking out every which way.Bleeding, causing me grief. I realizedfter a minute that when Id woken

up, things were ne. Then I pickedup my phone. You know. Email thegroup, check the three or four differentmessenger programs that peoplekeep lling up overnight even thoughhey shouldnt because theyre pocket

messaging or drunk or both. And theweets come stabbing in, with peoplerying hard to be pithy and smart, orworse, not trying. Then there are the

news updates. Three or four news siteshat push news out of the browser andnto email. And in each mail (like goingo St. Ives), there are forty links, andvery link has forty sites, and every site

has forty downloads....Any one of thesehings would be enough on its own to

keep me occupied, if I thought about itong enough, for hours.

But Im not about hours anymore.Im about splinters. Some are in myeyesYouTube is busy jabbing me with someones clever remix of AmyWinehouses posthumous reworking ofLady (apparently still alive) Gaga. Andall I did to get a st full of splinters waspick up my phone. I havent even goneto the main source yetthe iPad orthe netbook or, good lord, the laptopor actual tower that stands in one place, and is connected to an Ethernet cable. If the smartphone lls my eyes, handsand brain with data shards, the biggermachines are like going to the sawmillof information: huge planks of datare at me as I duck and weave, tryingto focus on at least one thing, get one

thing considered, one thing done. What Im talking about is the wayweve chipped data, or information, ormaybe news, or just updates aboutour friends, down to such a ne degreethat we expect everything to be short, important, and forgettable. We didntused to call it updating when wemet friends when we walked together, we just called it, well...meeting(how lame-o is that?). But now socialnetworks that all appear to be free (as

long as you dont mind the herpes ofrepetitive pop-up ads, ads synchronizedto your buying patternsmoredistracters), have branded humaninteraction. Thank heavens for like orfriend or thumbs up because thatsaves me from having to respond toyou personally. And why does it have tobe forgettable? Because there isnt timeto remember it. Have you ever lookedback over the day to see just how manytweets, e-mails, texts, messages, calls orsplinters youve red out there? Count.

Take one day and count them all.Theres a jittery quality to all this. Oneof the things you have to learn moredeeply at university than youve everhad to learn it before is how to handleyour time. Im still learning this, andIve been teaching at universities for20 years. I log on to get that one piece

of email that must be answered, thours later log off and realize thatonly did I not answer the email, I canlonger remember who it was from, wit was about, or how it was importaalso didnt get anything done exceptI pulled email splinters that pokedand irritated my sense of calm enothat I took the data tweezers to them

But here at the university, just like I need to read books and articleneed to mark papers and commenthem enough that people readingcomments can gure out how to mthe next assignments better, I neehandle mail that solves problemsat least doesnt make them wo And theres more: I want to

books for pleasure, see whole mouninterrupted, talk to my friendsjust throw little bits of data their wwant to know how they are, and I wthem to ask me, too.

In order to care about things, we hto engage with them, stay focused. splinter in your hand, eye, or bdraws bright, burning attention to ialone. Theres no time for considerapause, reection or, for want obetter word, thought, if all of

we are is consumed with little shof information being forced underskin. Im not sure if we can rememhow to do one thing at a time: its hathan it looks. So heres to the poweone: lets give it a try.

he collapse of the 168-year-old NewsOf The World. Staff at the best-sellingBritish tabloid owned by mediaycoon Rupert Murdochs News Corp.

were accused in the early days of Julyof illegally hacking into the voicemailsof celebrities, politicians, and most

    notably, 13-year-old murder victim MillyDowler.

The paper was also accused of illegallyccessing bank account informationnd medical records of British Prime

Minister David Cameron and his family.n the aftermath, the tabloid was shut

down and several high-ranking Britishpoliticians and police ofcers eitheresigned or were arrested in connection

    with the crimes.

The asco couldnt have occurred at

a worse time for Murdoch, as NewsCorp. was on the cusp of taking overthe successful British satellite newsnetwork British Sky Broadcasting. Thetakeover would have put unprecedentedamount of British media inuence intoMurdochs hands, raising questionsabout monopolization of the news.So contentious was the scandal thatin a bold display of deance to News

Corp.s hegemony, Britains Parliamenttabled a motion supported by all theparties urging Murdoch to scrap thedeal, which he reluctantly did. Thegovernment inquiry is ongoing.

The story took a sinister turn on July 18,when Sean Hoare, the scandals original whistleblower, was found dead in hishome. Police ruled that his death wasnot thought to be suspicious, thoughone cannot help but wonder at theextraordinary timing of this apparentcoincidence.

At an emergency session of Parliamheld the following day, Murdoch questioned in connection to the scan Though he began by calling it most humble day of my career, apologized to the victims, he deniedpersonal responsibility for or knowlof the crimes, and refused to resign

The fact that Murdoch even showeto the summons from Parliament sp

to the extent to which his ego inuence were deated by the sca until now, the Prime Minister wbe granted an audience with Murdnot vice-versa. Though Murdochs grip on news outlets around the wremains largely unshaken, Parliameactions are promising; the whole ahas dealt a much-needed blowMurdochs ego. For now, at least, voracious march of News Corpbeen curbed.

On July 22, Norway was devastatedby a car bombing in Oslo and a masshooting at a youth camp on the island

of Utya, killing a total of 77 andnjuring nearly 100 more. The loneperpetrator was captured and identieds Anders Breivik, a right-wing extremistnd Norwegian citizen.

t was soon revealed that Breiviksmotives were political and racist innature. On the day of the massacre,he posted a 1,500-page ultranationalistmanifesto online, large parts of whichwere plagiarized from the writing ofTed Kaczynski (better known as the

Unabomber). It calls for a holy wargainst Islam, cultural Marxism, and

multiculturalism in Europe. The presshad to walk a ne line when dealing withBreivik: while it is obviously importanto report the news in detail and withoutensorship, this unfortunately serves to

draw attention to his dubious cause.

Though he may be insane, Breivik is nottupid: in his manifesto, he mentionsand promptly demonizes) severaluthors whose names frequently gracehe pages of MIT syllabi, includingAntonio Gramsci, Karl Marx, and theFrankfurt School (not to mention theun-cited Kaczynski). However, hiswork betrays his disturbingly narrowworldview, which is organized into

series of binary oppositions, anddeliberately seeks to make an Otherof anyone who disagrees with his hate-uelled proclamations.

Tragically, it appears the colossal irony oftarting a holy war to prevent, as he calledt, the ongoing Islamic colonization of

    Europe, was lost on him.

On May 2, Prime Minister StephenHarper was re-elected with a majorityConservative government. MichaelIgnatieff s Liberals suffered their worstloss in the history of the party, while Jack Laytons NDP had their best-everelection, nishing with 103 seats andforming the Ofcial Opposition for therst time. Tragically, Layton succumbedto cancer on August 22

The NDP wasted no time in showing

their desire to oppose Harper, mountingan ambitious yet ultimately fruitless 58-hour libuster to block the Conservativesfrom legislating postal workers back to work, following their strike and thenlockout from Canada Post in June.

Meanwhile, the new government isexpected to table Internet-relatedlegislation, which is sure to draw theire of many MIT students, includingmeasures to legalize warrantlesssurveillance of Canadians onlineactivities by authorities.

Since March, an estimated 2000 peoplehave been killed in anti-governmentprotests in Syria, as tanks and snipersof President Bashar al-Assads nationalsecurity forces regularly re into large

civilian crowds. During a crackdown inAugust, more than 300 were killed in asingle week.

Outside of Syria, the protests are referredto as pro-democratic and peaceful (byStephen Harper, for example), and thebrutality of the Syrian regime is beingroundly admonished.

However, the Syrian state media (i.e.propaganda) prefers a rather differentreading. Under the subheading TheReality of Events, one article damns

the collective efforts of the protesters, setting them up as criminals who deserveno leniency.

Whatever the spin, a governmentunrepentantly ring on its owncitizens makes for a revolting situation;unfortunately, there does not appear tobe an end in sight.

Polls show that Canadians are divabout the role of the monarchCanada. Public opinion seems to be between adoration and indiffere with a healthy amount of critthrown in for good measure (rperhaps royal tours arent the bestof our tax dollars).

Though the ofcial popularity numfor Prince William and DucCatherines recent whirlwind tour hnot yet been released, polls conduprior to their June 30 arrival shothat 54% of Canadians aged 18-34 windifferent.

Will and Kate arguably have the chance for reviving faith in the monartheir joke-making and jeans-wearing

them apart from their tradition-steepredecessors. But will it be enougconvince Canadians that being parthe Commonwealth is a good thing?
