Objective: Students will be able to make inferences about the author’s viewpoint by identifying facts and opinions from the text.

DEFINITIONS Fact: a statement that can be

proved true. Can I prove it is correct? If yes, it is a fact. Can the statement be checked somehow? If yes,

it is a fact.

Opinion: someone’s personal feelings; a judgment

Author’s Viewpoint: an author lets the reader know how they feel about something by the things they include in the text.

King George of England governed the American colonies. He needed money so in 1764, England decided to tax the colonists. There were taxes put on sugar, newspapers, stamps, and other goods. The tax money went to England and did not help the colonists. Therefore, the colonists protested and refused to buy these items. The colonists did the right thing by not buying items that were taxed.

Everyone thought she was a great soldier. She was hurt twice during battle. The first time she was cut on the head by a sword. The next time, she was shot in the shoulder. The doctors finally discovered she was a woman when she got very sick. Although the army was shocked, she had earned their respect so they did not punish her.

Benjamin Franklin was born January 17, 1706, in Boston, Massachusetts. He invented many wonderful things. For example, he invented the rocking chair, bifocals, and the Franklin Stove. The stove was amazing. The stove used less wood then regular stoves and could be used to heat a house. Before his death in 1790, he invented many more things. bifocals
