Always replace both seat belt tensioners and buckles, even if there was no passenger in the passenger seat. Removing Front Seat Storage Compartment Front seat as far forward as possible. Remove seat storage compartment by lifting up its front edge and pushing it back. The figure shows a mechanical front seat. For power seat: Disconnect connector from power seat control module. The control module is located under the seat. Secure The SIPS-bag NOTE: If the seat is not equipped with a SIPS-bag, continue with EH3. WARNING: If the front seat is equipped with a SIPS bag this must be secured before starting work. Use the transport safety device in the holder on the inside of the seat compartment cover on the inside of a SIPS seat. Never apply external force to side of seat. Front Seat Belt Buckle and Seat Belt Tensioner - Replacement

Replacement RequirementAfter a collision in which the SRS system has been activated. Always replace both seatbelt tensioners and buckles, even if there was no passenger in the passenger seat.

Removing Front Seat Storage Compartment

Front seat as far forward as possible.Remove seat storage compartment by lifting up its front edge and pushing it back.The figure shows a mechanical front seat.

For power seat:Disconnect connector from power seat control module. The control module is locatedunder the seat.

Secure The SIPS-bag

NOTE: If the seat is not equipped with a SIPS-bag, continue with EH3.

WARNING: If the front seat is equipped with a SIPS bag this must be securedbefore starting work. Use the transport safety device in the holder on the inside ofthe seat compartment cover on the inside of a SIPS seat. Never apply externalforce to side of seat.

Remove the transport safety device from the holder on the inside of the cover. (Onall SIPS seats.)Install the transport safety device on the SIPS sensor.

Remove seat belt from seat mounting (1 x 12 mm bolt).Push seat forward.Remove panels and 2 mounting bolts (14 mm) from the rear edge of the seat rails.Push seat back.Remove panel and 2 mounting bolts (14 mm) from the front edge of the seat rails.

Make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio is installed.Ignition off.

Disconnect battery negative lead.Disconnect the connectors from the front seat (under the seat by the front edge ofthe seat rail).Lift the seat straight up so that the guide pins on the underside of the seat railsare freed from their holes in the floor.

Removing Seat Belt Buckle

Remove bolt from the seat belt buckle. Make a note of the routing of cables andthe location of cable ties.Cut cable ties.Remove seat belt buckle with cable.

NOTE: Cabling is routed differently in fixed seats, mechanical seats and power seatswith and without memory. The figure shows a mechanical front seat.

Installing Seat Belt Buckle

Install seat belt buckle (1 bolt).Seat belt buckle tightening torque = 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).Install cable from seat belt buckle.Replace cable ties.

Remove "B" post inner panel. Pull off (attached with clips).

Removing Connector From Seat Belt Tensioner

WARNING: The battery should not be connected when SRS ignition cable igniterconnector is removed or installed.

Remove SRS ignition cable igniter connector from seat belt tensioner.

Removing Seat Belt Tensioner And Seat Belt (inertia) Reel

WARNING: Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuringinstrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed pyrotechnical seatbelt tensioner. This could deploy the seat belt tensioner.

Remove:

seat belt (inertia) reel from "B" post (2 x 14 mm screw).seat belt tensioner from "B" post (1 x Torx 30).

WARNING: The seat belt tensioner must never be taken apart, repaired or movedto another vehicle. Follow instructions in section F on handling a replaced seatbelt tensioner.

Installing Seat Belt Tensioner And Seat Belt (inertia) Reel

WARNING: Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuringinstrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed pyrotechnical seatbelt tensioner. This could deploy the seat belt tensioner.

Install:

seat belt (inertia) reel to "B" post (2 x 14 mm screw).Seat belt (inertia) reel tightening torque =40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).seat belt tensioner to "B" post (1 x Torx 30).Seat belt tensioner tightening torque = 6 Nm (4.5 ft. lbs.).

Installing Seat Belt Tensioner Connector

WARNING: The battery should not be connected when SRS ignition cable igniterconnector is removed or installed.

Connect SRS ignition cable igniter connector to seat belt tensioner.

Installing "B" Post Inner Panel

Install "B" post inner panel. Push into place (attached with clips).

Installing Front Seat

Install seat. Align seat rail guide pins with their holes in the floor.Connect connectors to the front seat (under the seat by the front edge of the seatrail).

WARNING: Ensure that nobody is in the car when the battery is being connected.

Switch the ignition to position II.

Connect battery negative lead.

Seat should be as far back as possible.Install 2 mounting bolts (14 mm) and panel to front edge of the seat rails.Seat rail tightening torque = 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).Push seat forward.Install 2 mounting bolts (14 mm) and panels in the rear edge of the seat rails.Seat rail tightening torque = 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).Install seat belt to seat mounting (1 x 12 mm bolt).Seat belt mounting tightening torque =40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).

NOTE: The outer rear mounting bolt is tightened last. Otherwise the seat may not beproperly aligned.

Check that:

the seat belt (inertia) reel locks as it should. Test this by pulling it out and jerkingit repeatedly.the seat belt locks into the seat belt buckle.seat belt reminders work.power seats can be controlled.

Reset The SIPS-bag

NOTE: If the seat is not equipped with a SIPS-bag, skip the reset procedure.

WARNING: If the front seat is equipped with a SIPS bag this must be reset whenwork is finished. Remove the transport safety device from the SIPS sensor. Neverapply external force to side of seat.

Remove the transport safety device from the SIPS sensor.Install the transport safety device in the holder on the inside of the cover.

Install seat compartment. The figure shows a mechanical front seat.

Final CheckCheck any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) and check for DTCs.
