1 Introduction
With the recent and successful launch of Stream 4M and 6M compressors with CoreSense™ Diagnostics, Emerson has decided to consolidate product families over time in order to allow OEM’s and wholesalers to reduce complexity, product proliferation and therefore cost of operation.
The following changes will affect the semi-hermetic compressor range:
Conversion to black colour, similar to Stream compressors colour.
Conversion from to brand (cylinder head plates, compressor name plates, various labels).
Change of product nomenclature to reflect the brand change. The leading character “D”
traditionally used for compressors will no longer be used in the black painted compressors that use the brand.
Replacement of D2S, D3S and D8S with equivalent Copeland Discus™ 2D, 3D and 8D compressors.
Replacement of D4S, D4D, D6S and D6D with Stream 4M and 6M models.

3 Replacement of D2S compressors
The D2S reed valve 2-cylinder S-Series will be phased out and replaced with the high efficiency Copeland Discus 2D series.
3.1 Performance – Cross reference tables
3.1.1 Cross reference table
D2S compressors and Discus 2D have different performances. The equivalent compressor can vary depending on the application and the refrigerant used.

3.4 Accessories
The standard delivery content of D2S and 2D compressors is the same.
3.4.1 Common accessories
D2S and 2D compressors use the same following accessories:

3.4.2 Specific accessories
3.4.2.1 Liquid injection
Liquid injection system (Demand Cooling) is required for applications of Discus compressors with R22 at low evaporating temperatures.
NOTE: R22 is no longer allowed for new refrigeration systems in Europe. Only recycled R22 is allowed for maintenance until 2015. From 1
st January 2015, R22 supply will be
forbidden.
Changing a compressor on an installation could be an opportunity to exchange R22 for a longer term refrigerant and at the same time to discard the liquid injection system.
3.4.2.2 Unloaded start
D2S and 2D compressors use the same principle for unloaded start. However the unloaded start kits are not interchangeable.
The unloaded start can be ordered as an accessory (already assembled together with the compressor) or as a separate upgrade kit.

The D3S reed valve 3-cylinder S-Series will be phased out and replaced with the high efficiency Copeland Discus 3D series.

4.3.2 Motor codes
The motor versions that are proposed are the same for D3S and 3D compressors.
4.4 Accessories
The standard delivery content of D3S and 3D compressors is the same.
4.4.1 Common accessories
D3S and 3D compressors use the same following accessories:

4.4.2 Specific accessories
4.4.2.1 Liquid injection
Liquid injection systems (DTC and Demand Cooling) were used for applications with R22 at low evaporating temperatures.
NOTE: R22 is no longer allowed for new refrigeration systems in Europe. Only recycled R22 is allowed for maintenance until 2015. From 1
st January 2015, R22 supply will be
forbidden.
Changing a compressor on an installation could be an opportunity to exchange R22 for a longer term refrigerant and at the same time to discard the liquid injection system.
DTC (Discharge Temperature Control): The DTC liquid Injection used on D3S compressors cannot be used on 3D compressors. The Demand Cooling system will be an alternative.
Demand Cooling: “Demand Cooling” as the term implies, means liquid refrigerant injection on demand. Demand Cooling is required for R22 operation of Discus compressors at low temperature.
4.4.2.2 Capacity control
Capacity control does not exist on D3S compressors.
Moduload and Digital are the two types of capacity modulation available for 3D compressors. If capacity modulation is required, either Moduload or Digital must be included in the original customer order for installation at the factory.
4.4.2.3 Unloaded start
Both models use the same principle for unloaded start. However the unloaded-start kits are not interchangeable (except the piping assembly with control valve). The unloaded start can be ordered as an accessory (already assembled with the compressor) or as a separate upgrade kit.

5 Replacement of D4 and D6 compressors
A special Replacement Guideline is dedicated to the replacement of S-Series and Discus compressors with Service compressors. Performance/dimensions comparison tables and advice for replacement are provided in that document.
The cross reference tables given below do not take the various refrigerants into account. For more accurate equivalence it is advised to read the Replacement Guidelines “Service Compressors for 4 & 6 Cylinder S-Series and Discus (D4D, D4S, D6D, D6S)”, available on our website at www.emersonclimate.eu.

6 Replacement of D8S compressors
The D8S reed valve 8-cylinder S-Series will be phased out and replaced with the high efficiency Copeland Discus 8D series.

6.3.2 Motor codes
The motor versions that are proposed are the same for D8S and 8D compressors.
6.4 Accessories
The standard delivery content of D8S and 8D compressors is the same.
6.4.1 Common accessories
D8S and 8D compressors use the same following accessories:

6.4.2 Specific accessories
6.4.2.1 Additional fans
D8S and 8D compressors use the same additional fan, but the mounting parts are different and will have to be changed.
6.4.2.2 Capacity control
Both S-Series and Discus compressors can be used with capacity control, but they use specific capacity control components. Only the solenoid valve/coil/gasket kit is interchangeable.
The capacity control can be ordered as an accessory (already assembled together with the compressor) or as a separate upgrade kit.
6.4.2.3 Unloaded start
Both S-Series and Discus compressors can be used with unloaded start, but they use specific unloaded start components. Only the solenoid valve/coil/gasket kit is interchangeable.

7 Motor protection
Copeland Brand compressors use a new generation of thermistor protection which has the same main features as the old one.
IMPORTANT
Different source for power supply and contacts 11 & 14! Module malfunction! Use same potential for power supply and the switch contact of the control loop (11-14).

8 Replacement for operation in parallel
8.1 Parallel operation with active oil management systems
When replacing a compressor on an installation with oil management systems, having the same sight glasses at the same position is the easiest situation as no modification of the equalisation line is required.
8.1.1 Replacement with same sight glass design and position
Replacement of D3S with 3D compressors Replacement of D4S, D4D, D6S and D6D with Service compressors Replacement of D8S with 8D compressors
It is possible to keep the existing oil management systems when replacing a compressor in a rack.
Replacement compressor acceptable oil levels are the same as for the original compressors.
8.1.2 Replacement with same sight glass design but different position
Replacement of D2S with 2D Replacement of D2S with 3D
The oil level regulators will fit the replacement sight glasses, but the oil equalisation line will have to be modified.
8.1.3 Replacement with different sight glass design
Replacement of D2S with LSG:
o D2S use 3 screw sight glasses, and LSG uses a male type sight glass The sight glass adaptor will have to be changed
o The position of the sight glass is different The oil equalisation line will have to be modified
Replacement of D8S with 6M:
o Both compressors use 3 screw sight glasses, but the 6M sight glass is reversed The sight glass adaptor will have to be changed
o The position of the sight glass is different The oil equalisation line will have to be modified
8.2 Parallel operation with passive oil management systems
Parallel operation with passive oil management system will only be possible with compressors listed in section 8.1.1 above.
These Tandem combinations will ensure about the same behaviour of the replacement compressor in terms of oil distribution compared to the original models (Twin and parallel operation in rack), even if both compressors are equipped with blocked suction capacity control. Since the sight glasses are identical, it is possible to keep the existing adapters for connection to compressor body at sight glass position when replacing a compressor in a rack.
For trio applications, it is expected that the replacement compressor will perform like the original models in terms of gas and oil equalization. However, Emerson Climate Technologies cannot exclude that modifications of existing passive oil management systems are required or that an active oil management system is the only successful solution.
For applications with more than 3 compressors only active oil management systems are recommended.
