Adelegation including Minnedosa ratepayers HermanKlassen, Neil Cameron, and Jim Fossum appearedbeore own Council uesday evening with some con-cerns regarding the Minnedosa Regional Events Cen-tre (MREC) proposal. Following the January 17th, 2012Public Inormation Meeting the gentlemen, along withEric Neueld, who was unable to attend uesdays meet-ing put some o their thoughts, concerns and questionsdown on paper and wrote to Council in early March. Tedelegation, with Herman serving as spokesperson, met

with council uesday night to go over the contents otheir letter.

Te delegation voiced its concerns regarding the$300,000 tax revenue generated rom the Husky plantbeing set aside in an MREC reserve on an annual basis.axpayers are being blinded that the taxes rom Husky

will pay or the debenture ($3.5 million over 25 years) andthen some, but council has no assurance these taxes willexist or 25 years, stated the delegations letter. Adding tothat, Klassen stated, Teres no guarantee Husky is go-ing to be here in fve years or even two years. All you haveto do is review the history o the distillery. We had a dis-tillery; it closed down then fnally Mohawk bought it out.Industry goes that way. You cant make the assumptionits going to be here or 20 years. People are under the im-pression that this is going to pay or it, but what i Huskyisnt there?

Councils response indicated that Husky still paysbasic taxes as it did beore the plant expansion. Te

$300,000 is money that was not there beore 2009 (plantexpansion). When it came on line, the council o the dayelected to use it to set up a reserve or a new arena, ex-plained Mayor Ray Orr. Certainly there is an assumptionthat Husky will continue to operate over a long-term pe-riod. Tey spent $150 million on a new plant so were as-suming theyre going to be here.

Te delegation also voiced concerns that althoughthe Mayor continually says taxes will not increase as a re-sult o MREC, there will be a $50 levy put in place to helppay or this project. Just think about that, a levy is a tax, stated Herman. With the garbage levy at least you cansay its an essential service. Is this (MREC) really the bestpriority or the town? Its not an essential service. Tis is aat tax that benefts the well to do and hammers the poor.Tat is very unair taxation.
