The colour, quality and direction of light illuminating a
subject or scene determine the colours, values, shadow
patterns and mood in a painting. Together, we will explore
various impressionistic watercolour techniques to render
scenes in a hazy mist, in the warm glow of sunset, in electric
night lights, under the shimmer of the northern lights, and
with backlighting. Level: Beginner and intermediate – some
experience is recommended.

Develop Your Unique Visual Vocabulary
Playing with space using acrylic paint is one of the ultimate pleasures and methods
for surprising yourself and the viewer. This course looks at different ways space
has been created through the ages and how you can use these ideas in your own
work. We look at the technical approaches employed to “fool the eye” – from
framed scenes of the Academy to the spacial tensions set up by abstraction and the
fractured space of 20th century paintings. Students may choose to work abstractly
or naturalistically, at their own level, and will receive individual feedback. Level:
Beginners and beyond.

With the European Blue Tit as our subject, we will spend the
first three days carving an alert pose in tupelo wood using power
tools and will then bring the bird to life by painting its colours.
Special attention will be paid to the bird’s anatomy and unique
identifiable markings. Using acrylic paints, you will also learn
how to apply paint with the appropriate brushes in order to
render a life-like interpretation of the bird. A materials fee of
$30, payable to the instructor, covers the tupelo wooden blank,
patterns in black and white and colour, a set of eyes and feet, as
well as sealer, gesso and the use of all necessary paints. Level:
intermediate and advanced wood carvers.
