Coalition members met with key players in the congressional budget process. “During our meetings with Congressional representatives, we found broad support for the importance of federal research funding and the need for predictable, sustained funding,” said Lesley Kistner, CBICC Communications Director, who represented the CBICC at the DC fly-in. “But there is a lot of work that needs to be done to ensure that long-term research funding increases in the federal budget. This is critical to maximizing research investments in order to advance our economy and global competitiveness.” The coalition will continue to mobilize support among House and Senate At DC ‘fly-in,’ CBICC touts economic importance of federal research funding The CBICC and other members of the national “Business for Federal Research Funding” coalition attended a day of Congressional meetings in Washington, DC on Monday, June 9 to build support for strong research funding growth in the federal budget. The coalition is pushing for sustained research funding growth across several areas of the budget, including those related to the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, NASA, and the departments of Agriculture, Defense, Energy and Homeland Security. In addition to the CBICC, the delegation included representatives from the CEO CBICC Mission One of the largest chambers/ economic development organizations in Pennsylvania, the Chamber of Business & Industry of Centre County is the unified voice of businesses of all sizes and industry sectors in Centre County. The CBICC’s mission is to promote the well-being and growth of commerce and industry, while striving to maintain a high quality of life for those who live, work and do business in Centre County. Trans-Cell Conversion Technology Dr. Gong Chen

Trans-Cell’stechnologywillprovidearevolutioninbrainrepairforpatientssufferingfrombraininjury,stroke,Alzheimer’s,ParkinsonDiseaseandotherneurologicaldissolventbyamethodofrepairingglialscaringcausedbyinjurytothebrainorillness.Currently,nomethodofrepairexists.Thisprocesscouldbelife-changingfortreatmentofmillionsofpeople.

Thecompanyhasapatentpendingandhasconductedclinicaltestresearchonanimals.Itisworkingtowardapre-clinicaltrialonhumans,whichwilltake5yearsto8yearstocomplete.“Bigpharma”hasexpressedinterestinpartneringwithTrans-Cell.Dr.Chen’slabcurrentlyhas20employeeswithneedtohireadditionalemployees.

Thecompanyisdevelopinganinvitrofertilization(IVF)todecreasethenumberofdairycowsdeemedinfertile.Cowsthathavedifficultyinconceivingthroughartificialinseminationarecostlytofarmersbecausetheyaren’tmilkproducingandasaresult,needtobereplacedintheherd.VeterinariansdealingincattlewillmarketWaybrights’embryos.Theembryoshiscompanydevelopsarenotan“elite”embryousedtoproduceageneticallysuperiorlineofdairycow;theywillsolvetheproblemofinfertility.

Duringthe10-weekBootCampprogram–achangefromthepreviouseight-weekformat–participatingcompaniesmettogetherforjointmentoring,aswellasindividualmentoringsessionswithpartnersoftheTechCelerator@StateCollege.Morethan500hoursofmentoringserviceswereprovided.

Attheconclusionoftheprogram,thecompaniespitchedtheirideastoapanelofjudges,whichincludedCBICCEntrepreneurshipCommitteeChairmanToddErdley,presidentandCEOofVideon.Intheaudienceweregraduatesofpreviousbootcamps,representativesfromthepartnersoftheTechCeleratorandCBICCBoardmembers,inadditiontomembersofthecommunity.

Attheendofthepresentations,twocompanieswereselectedtoevenlyshareinthe$10,000fundingprize--Trans-CellConversionTechnologyandIVFCellTechnology,nowanaffiliateCBICCbusinessincubatormember.

Leafyisawatercontentsensorappliedtoaplanttodeterminetheamountofwaterintheplant.Thecurrentmethodsusedforirrigationsystemsteststhewatercontentofthesoil,whichwhileimportant,doesn’tactuallyaddressplantneeds.Usingtheleafsensorplacedonplantsthroughoutafieldwillreducethecostofirrigationandprovidebetterperformanceofcrops.BecauseofCalifornia’sdroughtconditionsandthevolumeoffoodproduced,itwillbeaninitialteststate.AdditionalinfieldtestingwillbeconductedduringJuly2014;commercialsalesareprojecttobegin

February2016.

Muchofthisworktakesplacequietly,behindthescenes.Atanygiventime,theCBICC/CCIDCmayreceiveprojectrequeststhroughGATorOIBDfromclientsseekingPennsylvanialocationstoconductbusiness.

“Inmostcases,wedonotknowtheoutcomeoftheprojectunlesswearefortunateenoughtomakethe‘short’list,”Residessaid,notingthattypically,notmorethanthreetofivelocationsmovetoa“short”list.

Ifasecondrequestisreceived,itasksformorespecific,detailedinformationabouttheproperty/facilityandthelocalcommunity.

InDecember2013,theSEDA-CouncilofGovernments,theCenterforDirectInvestmentandTeamPennsylvaniaFoundation,alongwithnumerousprogrampartners–includingtheCBICC/CCIDC–announcedanewpartnershipinitiativeisdesignedtoattractinternationalinvestmenttotheCommonwealth’sruralcounties,thosecomprisingthe“T”region.Oneearlygoaloftheinitiativewasthelaunchofanewwebsite,www.corepaglobal.org.ThelaunchofthewebsitewasscheduledtocoincidewiththestartoftheWorldForumforForeignDirectInvestmentinPhiladelphiaonJune16-18.Themulti-yearinitiativeispartiallyfundedbyafederal“MakeitinAmerica”grant.Only10grantswereawardednationwidebytheObamaadministration,ruralPennsylvaniabeingoneofthoserecipientsat$1.8million.
