Church Hopes to Raise Funds for Audio/Visual Enhancements Over the past several years, there has been a growing concern for worshippers with impaired

hearing. Our present sound system is excellent, but has to cover a large acoustical sanctuary

creating a challenge for those with hearing aids. In order to provide a clearer and more crisp

sound, we have been professionally advised to add additional (secondary speakers) under

the balcony and in the organ platform as well as a speaker in the fellowship hall downstairs.

To do this, we will also need an additional amplifier to augment our existing amplifier. But

speakers are not the end all. A significant part of any worship experience is spoken from the

main floor (baptisms, communion, recognitions, announcements, joys and concerns, children

messages) and so enhanced, quality wireless microphones are also needed. Also it is our

hope to piggyback on the technician's installation labor to add a quality digital recorder and

projector (wired into the overall sound system) to enhance our future worship experience.

The cost of these improvements is approximately $10,000.

Lloyd Whipple was one of many parishioners who had difficulty hearing during worship. The

church received a significant amount of memorial funds in his memory which will serve as a

foundation to make this project possible. However, we need additional financial support be-

fore we can make a commitment to proceed. If all goes well we would like to schedule the

installation to happen before the end of the summer. If this project appeals to you, and you

are able, we ask you to consider a special gift. Gifts should be designated "Lloyd Whipple Me-

morial" or "Sound/Video Project."

Ceil’s Book Corner

Two of my favorite authors are John Ortberg and Max Lucado. Both authors use their sense of humor and the art of storytelling to bring the message of Christ alive in an encouraging and heartwarming manor.

When the Game is Over It All Goes Back in the Box by John Ortberg is a book about how to play the game of life. Each of the chapters discusses how being rich toward God is the way to win trophies that will last forever. Chapters in the book include; Play by the Rules, Play with Grati-tude, and Be the Kind of Player People Want to Sit Next To.

Another book with a similar theme is Out Live Your Life by Max Lucado. I was reminded of this book after Sunday’s sermon (May 27th) on being called to service. In the book, Max discusses how God wants to use each of us in His ministry. One of my favorite quotes from the book is, “God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.” He makes the available able. One of the great things about this and other Lucado books are the studies for each of the chapters that make them great for small group discussion. All of the author’s royalties from the sale of this book go to World Vision and other faith-based compassion ministries.

MISSION NEWS Thank you to everyone who generously donated to the Church World Services Blanket Program on Mother’s Day. At least $1,000 was raised to be used to help those in need who have been displaced during natural dis-asters or conflicts here in the U.S. and around the world.

We continue our bi-monthly commitment to the Dismas House evening meal program. Ceil, Vicki and Lois will be preparing a meal and going to the Dismas House on Wednesday, June 20th. If anyone is interested in participating in this program please let us know. Ceil and Tamra attended the Dismas annual dinner/auction on May 20th at the Holiday Inn. The dinner was well attended and three former residents shared their sto-ries of how the Dismas House changed their lives and gave them a chance to put their lives back together in a safe/drug free environment.

Upcoming Events: Fair Haven Concerned Clothing Drive will be in early August. When we have the dates we will let you know.

Fair Haven Area Crop Walk – is coming up in September. Our first planning meeting is on Thursday, May 31st. If you would like to help with organizing the walk please see Tamra.

Thank you, The Mission Committee

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NEWS Fundraising for Heifer International Greetings.. As many of you know the children in our church have participated in raising money for Heifer In-ternational in the past. It is something that the children will once again be doing. We are going to do a short campaign starting now and going through the end of Vacation Bible School (July 19). We will then start again in September. We are going to have a bottle drive on June 24th from 12:30 – 2:00 in the rear parking lot of the church. Along with the bottle drive we will have the children ask family members for bottle donations. We will leave a donation container in the church so you can bring your returnables with you each week. Look for the drop off box. About Heifer International (from their website) Heifer International was founded in 1944 by Church of the Brethren educator Dan West. His vision of a worldwide program to end hunger and poverty was born of his Christian faith. From the beginning, the vision has encompassed all spiritual paths and all people who understood that to serve God, we serve our brothers and sisters. Today, Heifer comprises people of faith working together around the world to realize its vision. Heifer envision a world of communities living together in peace and equitably sharing the resources of a healthy planet. It’s mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth. Their strategy is to pass on the Gift." As people share their animals' offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources, and skills – an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the globe. Vacation Bible School This years vacation bible school will be held July 15 – 19th each night we will run from 6-8pm. The closing

evening we will invite parents to join us for fun, a hot-dog roast, and water games. The theme for this year is

Operation Overboard. You can now register online by going to our website and clicking on the VBS link. A reg-

istration form is also within this newsletter. Please spread the word to any kids you think would like to join

us. If you have any questions I can be contact at 345-9461 or via email at [email protected]

My Visit With Martha By Tamra Staudter

The following excerpt is from a recent visit with Martha Towers. Martha and I have become good

friends in recent years and I enjoy our Sunday afternoon visits. Martha Maria Langdon was born on June 1st, 1912 to Henry Nelson Langdon and Martha Isabelle

(Russell) Langdon. Martha had two older brothers John Harmon and Nelson Russell Langdon. A few years later two more siblings joined the family Rita Shirley and Charles.

Martha grew up on the Fort Warren farm (just East of Main Street on Route 4A). She had many fond memories of her childhood including spending time with neighborhood friends including the Gibbs family who lived nearby as well as Joyce Thomas. Martha enjoyed swimming at the lake, ice skating and sledding in the winter. Her father was a mail carrier and had the Castleton route and in the early days he delivered mail by horse and buggy.

The family attended the Adventist Church until Martha was 12 years old. Martha was baptized at the church. In 1924, the church closed and the family joined the Federated Church. Martha was active in the church during her school years in the Sunday school, the junior choir and in Christian endeavor.

Martha attended school in Castleton through the 8th grade and then she spent four years at West Rut-land High School and graduated in 1930. She loved to sing and was in many school performances including school plays. There was a bus that went to the high school and the students rode the train (or trolley) back home. If they missed the train they walked home. During this time the family moved from the farm to the Langdon house (the house is next to the church and the Waterman’s live there now).

In the summers as a teenager she worked at the lake at the Trakenseen Inn and Restaurant. In the summertime there were also band concerts and dances at the pavilion and Martha enjoyed attending those events with her friends. Also, a high light at the end of the summer was the Rutland State Fair.

Martha then attended the Castleton Normal School (later named Castleton State College) and earned a two year teaching degree. She went back a few years later and earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching. While a student at CSC she worked for Carolyn Woodruff as a secretary during the summer months. While at Castleton she also enjoyed being in school performances and attending the formal dances.

Martha met Jerome (Bucky) Towers when he would come to the house to visit her older brothers. They dated and were married on June 15, 1940. They spent their honeymoon in New York City and traveled there by train. Bucky served in WWII in Europe and when he returned from the service they started their family. They have two children Carol (Towers) Moore and Chris. Carol attended Smith College and is mar-ried to Jeff Moore and they have a daughter Casey. They live in Binghamton, NY. Chris lives at home with Martha.

Martha’s husband Bucky also grew up in Castleton. His family lived on the North Road behind the Cath-olic Church (the house is directly across the street from where Stan and Marianne Patch live). Bucky was a good husband and father and he enjoyed nature and being outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Bucky passed away in February of 1978.

Martha continued teaching until her retirement at age 65. She taught in many schools in the Castleton/Fair Haven area. She was very active in the community and is a member of the Castleton Historical Society and the Castleton Women’s Club. She attended the Federated Church all during her adult years and sang in the choir. Martha was an alto and remembers fondly singing with Wilma Ellis another alto. She also taught Sunday school for many years.

In later years she became friends with Walter Follmer and they were good friends for many years and provided each other with companionship.

Martha mentioned to me that God has blessed her with a wonderful family and friends and good health. She turned 100 years old on Friday June 1st and celebrated with a reception here at the church on June 2nd.

Traveling Light By Lynn Olcott

Father’s Day

“ When he arose he took the young child and his mother and departed into the land of Egypt...and was there until the death of

Herod...and came into the land of Israel...and he turned aside into the region of Galilee...”

Matthew 2:14, 21-22

Father’s Day is a great idea. Everyone needs a father and several additional father-figures along the

way. Joseph is somewhat of a shadowy figure in biblical records, but I always think of him as a hard work-

ing, devoted father. He had the tremendous responsibility of taking care of a family, of keeping them safe

in dangerous times.

My sister and I were lucky. Our father taught us to clean fish, to diagram sentences and to dance.

He taught us to love justice and clean the eaves. He left us with certain family maxims that guide all of us

still, like “Don’t forget to smell the roses” and “You can’t win a pissing contest with a skunk.” Fathers

help us understand how the world works.

God, bless the fathers, especially, those who stand as fathers to the fatherless. Amen

(This article comes from archives of Olcott articles.

Please keep Lynn in your prayers as she is still recovering from a serious accident.)

Coming Soon...Save These Dates

July 3, Castleton Cares will be the beneficiary of the 50/50 Raffle at the Weekly Summer Concert Series

which is now held at the college. Come to the concert and take a chance on winning and help out Castleton

Cares! If you would like to volunteer to sell tickets, see Bev Carroll.

July 8, Church Picnic at the Noble estate on Tinmouth Pond. Rob tells me he has some fun new toys. How

would you like to repel from a trampoline into the lake from a new dock? Sounds fun. The picnic starts at

2pm and continues until whenever the last guest leaves. There will be swimming, boating, or just relaxing on

the deck and it’s a potluck so there is always great food.

October 19 & 20th—We will be hosting a Care and Kindness Conference here

at Federated Church. While in California at the Crystal Cathedral, Rev. Berry met

Dr. James Kok and invited him to come to Vermont. With the blessing of the

deacons and the Touching Lives Ministry Team, whose mission ties in perfectly

with the Care and Kindness Campaign (to teach, inspire, convince and motivate

Christian people to give loving-kindness, more regularly, every day, and every-

where they go.) We are in the planning stages of this event. If you would like to

pre-order Dr. Kok’s book “The Miracle of Kindness: Changing the World One

Act at a Time” for $14.00, see Bev Carroll and we’ll make a bulk order (retail

$17.95).

For more about Dr. Kok and his ministry check out careandkindness.org.
