From Your Admin TeamAs you are likely aware, the Minister of Education has announced that schools will remain closed until at least May 31. Although we are disappointed by this news we also recognize that the health and safety of our students and staff is at the forefront when making these important decisions. Our educators will continue to work from home providing our students with the best possible learning materials. Even though our buildings are closed we are starting to plan for the 2020-21 school year. Kindergarten Registration: Please be aware that students may still register for September JK and SK classes. If you have a kindergarten aged student who will be ready for school in September please register online at https:// www.dsbn.org/earlylearners/kickstart/register-online/ . Planning for Next Year In less than a month we will begin planning for the next school year. As a staff, we meet together to

place students in situations that are best for them academically. A great deal of time is invested to

provide the best placement for each and every student. Teachers try very hard to balance the

classes when they are created. There are many factors that are considered, including:

● the balance of boys and girls whenever possible

● students that should be separated from each other for various reasons

● grouping of students that will be able to work at various ability levels

● whether the student is in a split grade this year (if possible)

● treating all students fairly Please be aware, we are not able to create classes based on student

friendships.

Although final staffing is not yet determined, we will be accepting requests for specific teachers. If

you have educational concerns regarding your child that you wish the school to consider in class

placement, please express those in writing prior to May 15 and submit them to Mrs. Hadfield at

[email protected]. Please remember that we strive to create the best learning environment possible

for each child.

Phase 4 Tech Roll Out

Tuesday, May 5 will be our Phase 4 Tech Roll Out. If you have requested technology to support your children with the Learn at Home program, Ms. Moreau will be calling you on Friday, May 1 and/or Monday, May 4 to give you a pick up time. We MUST have assigned pick up times to ensure that we are following physical distancing protocols. When you receive your call it will come from a “BLOCKED” or “UNKNOWN” caller as staff are calling from their personal phones. Please answer the call! For the safety of all involved we are trying to limit the number of times we enter the school so it is important that you show up for your assigned time. If you do not have a confirmed pick up time you WILL NOT be able to pick up a Chrome Book. We DO NOT have a future date for further technology pick up.

April showers

bring May flowers.

Do you see any

flowers looking out

your window or on a walk? Stop to smell

them.

The birds are busy making nests to

have their babies.

Look for a bird’s nest outside your

window, backyard or on a walk.

Now is a great time to plant seedlings.

Watch this video and plant

a seed and watch what happens.

Squirrels build nests high up in trees. They look like balls of leaves.

Before the buds on trees start to burst into leaves can you see any

squirrel nests?

Trees are full of buds right now. Take a closer look.

You can almost watch them open

into leaves.

Pick a tree and watch it

every day this weekend. By Sunday it will look different than today.

From Your Youth Counsellor, Mrs. Mestek

Zippy Friends is a program that our younger students are familiar with. Below are some strategies as well as common language that you can try at home. Things that I have learned in Zippy’s Friends: *I can make myself feel better when I am sad, mad, upset, annoyed, angry or Nervous *I can turn to others for help like a friend or an adult I trust *I can be a good friend to others (listen respectfully, make them a card to cheer them up, use kind words, talk with them) *When I have a problem I need to calm down and relax before I think of solutions (count to 10, breathe, walk away, etc.) Things I can do to feel better… *breathe *colour *draw *talk it out *share my feelings *run *skip *rest * sing *ask for help *listen to music *play a game

The grade 2s shared tools and strategies we can use to help us get out of the Blue Zone and into the Green Zone. Spending time with our pets was a popular one.
