NEW CLUBHOUSE

As mentioned previously, there will be an official handover when the clubhouse and

immediate surrounds are complete. We then have to have some internal systems installed and tested prior to opening. Whilst things change by the week, and sometimes by the day, if all goes well we hope to move out of the exiting clubhouse around the end of October.

There will be further roadworks, car parking, landscaping and construction of a new

tee on the existing 1st hole to take place when the demolition has been completed. Those people who have requested Honour Boards from the existing clubhouse we

did ask to remove them by 11th September. We are still awaiting return of the Honour Boards being photographed as an archive record and we ask that you contact Dennis McGuirk with any questions you may have on this.

AVEO CLASSIC

The Aveo Classic was won by Russell Bunn from Newcastle Golf Club. He came in to collect his winnings last Friday.

Aveo were very pleased with the day and look forward to the Aveo Classic 2018 on our new course.

A special acknowledgement to Andrew in the Golf Shop. Andrew has largely been responsible for the prompt uploading of results for Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday appearing promptly on the website.

After closing the competition each time he has ensured results are emailed promptly

to enable the website to be updated shortly after. There was a problem with closing the competition last Sunday. That has now been

rectified and results were being on the website on Tuesday.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017.

As the new 17th Hole has been brought into play on a regular basis, the temporary 17th Hole can be used for short chipping and putting practice. Please do not use the complete hole for practice purposes. The old 10th hole can also be used for practice but we ask that you ensure you do not interrupt play on the new hole. As both of the above holes are not part of the course on the day, you will not be disqualified for practising on these holes prior to competition play. We had a field of 174 players last Saturday in the first round of the championship and a big thank you to everybody who participated. We recently were very excited when 160 players came along on Visitors Day but this is even better news. The club needs to grow playing numbers as much as possible and this is a positive step in that direction.

If you wish there is an optional Stableford event this Saturday and in Rounds 3 and 4 as well. Conditions of Play for this are shown on the following page:

LORNA STREET PROGRESS

There have been a couple of opportunities to view the progress being made on construction of the six new holes. As we said at the time, the focus has been on completing a capping over the area to be used by the golf course and this just about finished. Obviously at this stage it may not look too much like a golf course.

To give you an idea of what has been happening and what will be happening in the near future Turnpoint have provided some information.

As discussed here is a brief rundown of where things are at with regard to the progress out on Lorna St. Works have been progressing well over the past two months out on Lorna St. From a statistical point of view here are some numbers which you might find interesting; 1. So far nearly 100,000m2 of HiVis marker layer has been installed across the Lorna St site. 2. So far we have graded and shaped just under 1000 lineal metres of low permeability drainage swales. 3. We have imported to site via truck and dog nearly 24,000 Tonnes of clay material along with a further 10,000 Tonnes of limestone material for the greens and tees. 4. To date we have moved from the existing stockpiles on site, nearly 72,000 Tonnes of material out onto Lorna St. 5. We have stockpiled 10,000 Tonnes of topsoil ready to move into the low permeability swales. 6. We have received 8,000 m2 of Tensar grid, a structural geomembrane material which will be used under the greens and tees for stability. 7. We have taken delivery of over 4,000 m2 low permeability material which will be rolled out in the coming days/weeks. 8. The next phase of the works will see us transport the 10,000 Tonnes of tees and greens material from the current driving range out into Lorna St to cover the Tensar grid. 9. This will be followed closely by fine shaping the golf course and working in greens, tees, bunkers, cart paths and swales etc. over an area of approximately 90,000 m2 10. We will then commence irrigation works such as mainlines and laterals with well over 250 sprinklers, 10,000 lineal metres of pipework and over 22,000 lineal metres of cabling to install. 11. Topsoiling of the fairways and landscape zones will then commence with approximately 24,000 Tonnes of material being used to achieve the finished design levels. 12. Once all trimmed up and amendments made, grassing will commence on the tees, greens and fairways and the seeding of the landscape zones. Justin Trott GENERAL MANAGER - GOLF

Some of the terminologies would be quite strange to many of us but you can see there has been a lot of hard work getting to the point they have achieved with plenty more about to happen. By the end of November it will be starting to look like a golf course. Around that time we will try to arrange another organised viewing of the area.

Aveo are going to contribute to our newsletter on a regular basis. Below is their first article.

New Residents call Aveo Newcastle Home

Aveo’s first Newcastle retirement community opened its doors in August this year and has now

welcomed its first residents. The initial phase of Aveo Newcastle comprises 50 two-bedroom

independent living villas and once complete, the six-year project will feature a total of 300

independent villas and 127 aged care rooms catering to the over 65’s community.

Feedback so far has been very positive, with many attracted to the open-plan designs of the villas

and generous gardens. Residents are settling in and are looking forward to the completion of their

community centre which is set to open in November. The resident’s community centre will offer

health and wellbeing facilities including a state of the art gym, function rooms, lounge and media

areas, a hair salon and a resident’s bar providing a great place to gather and enjoy the popular

happy hour.

As part of this master-planned community, the Shortland Waters Golf Clubhouse is also receiving an

upgrade along with a new restaurant, so there will be plenty on offer for this growing community.

Our first villa release is almost sold out!
