Saturday, September 11th marked the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Like everyone else, I remember perfectly who told me to turn on the television that day, I remember where I was and what I was doing. At the time of the attacks, I was serving in St. Peter the Apostle Church in Philadelphia and the church was packed for the daily 12:10 p.m. mass. I decided to
pray the rosary with the congregation before that start of the mass, I can still feel the emotion of that day as we prayed together. There was one scripture quote which kept running through my mind: “This demon can only come out by prayer and fasting” (Matthew 17:21). That scripture comes from a story in which the apos-tles tried to expel a demon from a young boy but could not do it. The father of
faith and then added that the demon could only be cast out by prayer and fasting.
-ing asking the Lord to expel the demon of hate and violence from our world, we ended the day with solemn evening prayer for peace. I have to tell you that we truly felt Christ’s presence when we gathered for prayer that evening, it was a powerful experience! I remember when we invaded Afghanistan several months later, the headline on one news program was “America Fights Back”, it sounds foolish but sometimes I wonder, what if we fought back with nonviolence? What if we fought
-violence is a powerful and just weapon which cuts without wounding and ennobles the one who wields it. It is a sword that heals.

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” (Mark 8:34)
Living a stewardship lifestyle means not only being responsible for my own life, but for the lives of others as well. We realize that our gifts are not intended for ourselves, rather they are meant to be shared with others. “Taking up my cross” means doing things when someone else needs me and not when it’s convenient for me.g. When we put faith over possessions we truly realize it is better to give than receive.

MASS INTENTIONS FROM THE RECTOR

It’s a goal that would strengthen the offertory to be in line with current expenses. If you can not commit one hour at this time, we ask that you contribute at least $5 as a minimum offering for the upkeep and mission of the church. Every gift will be used wisely and carefully.
