LARGEST LAW FIRMS DIRECTORY 2012 | 1 FROM THE PUBLISHER Dear Readers, As part of our effort to provide you the most up-to-date information about the practice of law, Michigan Lawyers Weekly brings you the annual “Michigan’s Largest Law Firms” directory. This year, our state and the rest of the country appear to be pulling out of the economic malaise that had affected the largest to the smallest law firms. Changes are coming slowly as firms and other businesses try to assess the coming year. This is reflected in statistics in our publication this year; in a word, waiting. Lawyers Weekly invited law firms with 20 or more attorneys to participate in this compilation. Every effort was made, with surveys and personal contact, to provide as complete a listing as possible. Firms are ranked by the number of attorneys employed in Michigan as of Jan. 1, 2012. Firms with the same number of attorneys are listed alphabetically. We are proud to serve you. We appreciate your cooperation and welcome your comments, questions or recommendations. You may contact us at [email protected]. Sincerely, Donald W. Stemmermann Publisher, Michigan Lawyers Weekly

From the publisher

Dear Readers,

As part of our effort to provide you the most up-to-date information about the practice of law, Michigan Lawyers Weekly brings you the annual “Michigan’s Largest Law Firms” directory.

Sincerely,

Donald W. Stemmermann Publisher, Michigan Lawyers Weekly

upon a cursory glance at the numbers compiled in the 2012 edition of “Michigan’s Largest Law Firms,” one

would get the feeling that the 2011 statistics were the rule, with only few exceptions.

After all, the latest list — which chronicles activity from Jan. 1, 2011, to Jan. 1, 2012, among Michigan fi rms that have 20 or more attorneys — has 63 fi rms, like last year’s.

Also, as with 2011, three of the fi rms in the top 10 reported having a reduction of 10 or more attorneys, while one fi rm reported an addition of more than 10 lawyers.

The average male-to-female ratio for the top 20 largest law fi rms was 73/27 — the exact same as the year prior, while only one fi rm still has more female attorneys than male.

And the same 20 fi rms that made up the top 20 largest list in 2011 are still in that sector, although the ranking order of those fi rms shifted a bit.

But looking closer, differences begin to surface.

Granted, not all fi rm representatives who were sent questionnaires opted to provide answers to all categories, nor did they elect to break down their rosters by gender or provide billing rates. As such, the fi nal tally doesn’t fully refl ect how 20-plus-attorney fi rms in Michigan operate.

Still, there are shifts worth noting. For example, the average 2012 addition of

attorneys was three, compared to 2011’s four, and the reduction was averaged at four, while 2011 had fi ve.

Another set of numbers may suggest that there’s an upward trend in paralegals. While 18 fi rms reduced their paralegal staff

(compared to last year’s 20), 17 fi rms added paralegals — a difference

of seven greater than last year’s.

Two law fi rms made their debut in this year’s list, while two that

appeared in last year’s directory were ineligible for the 2012 edition, as they reported fewer than the minimum 20 attorneys required for inclusion.

And, although there have been reports that new associates have had trouble landing a spot at a large fi rms, the ones that did so in the past year have been rewarded: the average new-hire salary among the top 20 largest law fi rms was $106,000, a difference of $2,000 compared to the 2011 average.

Apparently, those new associates got a bit of a break, too: the average amount of associates’ expected billable hours is 1,835, which is four fewer hours compared to the 2011 quota.

same differences, but new changes?

numbers among state’s biggest fi rms make some subtle shifts
