Prices for most items range from $0.05 to $2.00. We carry useful supplies such as pencils, pens, mechanical pencils and lead refills, highlighters, notebooks, folders, and erasers. We also have an ever-changing assortment of fun products, such as novelty pens, mini erasers, puzzle erasers, sharpeners, markers, colored pencils, pencil toppers, pencil grips, and more. NYE LUNCHROOM RECYCLING PROGRAM

Dear Nancy Young Parents,

Nancy Young has been recycling in the lunchroom for the past couple of years. The hardest part of lunchroom recycling is usually the first month the kids are back at school. Summer is a long time to remember what is recyclable and what is not. And, for our new kindergarten Dolphins, this is probably the first time they have had to learn for themselves the difference between garbage and recyclables. Please have discussions with your kids about recycling. Allow them to put their lunch items into their own lunchbox/bag and have them tell you as they do which parts can be recycled. Better yet, send everything in reusable containers: it is cheaper, earth-friendly, and easier to remember!

For our families new to NY, “Phillip” is the main (decorated) recycling bin in the MPR and the slogan is “ Fill Up Phillip.” In addition to Phillip, he has four recycling bin friends that are hungry for plastics, foil, and cans.

A large part of this program being successful is YOU and we thank you in advance for your help with this endeavor.

Below is a list of some common lunch items that can/cannot be recycled:

Can be Recycled Cannot be RecycledAluminum soda/juice cans Juice boxes Aluminum foil Juice pouchesYogurt containers/yogurt drink containers Plastic wrap/wax paper/ZiplocsPlastic fruit or cereal containers StrawsPlastic bottles (water, Powerade, etc...) Utensils (unless have recycling arrow)Brown paper bags Milk cartonsPaper (not napkins)

Note: nothing needs to be rinsed/cleaned out to be recycled, as that is not possible at the school level. There are a couple of common sense “rules” that we have explained to the kids, however. For example, paper bags are recyclable; paper bags filled with garbage are not. Yogurt containers are recyclable; if mostly untouched, we are recommending they be thrown in the garbage due to the mess.

Best yet, helping REDUCE our waste at school by sending waste free lunches:

Five Simple Ways to Pack a Waste-Free Lunch(Waste free lunches save approximately $246 per year per child!)

ENERGY EFFICIENCY SUGGESTIONS

• Turn off the lights when you leave a room.• Use kitchen and bathroom ventilation fans wisely. These

fans can send a houseful of warm air outside in just one hour.

• Purchase compact fluorescent light bulbs to replace any incandescent bulbs in your home. These light bulbs offer significant energy savings and last much longer than their incandescent countertops.

• Replace the furnace filters, clean baseboard heaters, radiators, and refrigerator coils regularly. Dust and other debris can force them to use more energy than necessary.

• Install a set-back programmable thermostat to automatically manage the temperature in your home.

• Purchase Energy Star approved appliances to reduce energy use during normal household activities.

• Make use of the cold/cold setting on your washer-this reduces the large energy consumption required for water heating

• Use the lowest water level possible for loads in washer.• Try drying loads one after the other to take advantage of heat remaining in the dryer• Never add wet items to a dryer full of clothes that are nearly dry-this results in an overage

of energy use.• Make sure your home windows, doors, hot water heater, attic, and other area are well

insulated to avoid energy loss.• Consider replacing your windows with energy efficient models. The resulting cost savings

can help pay back your investment For more information on having an energy efficient home visit http://www.aurora-il.org/.

CHANGE YOUR AIR FILTER REGULARLY

Check your filter every month, especially during heavy use months (winter and summer). If the filter looks dirty after a month, change it. At a minimum, change the filter every 3 months. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool — wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system — leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure. For more information on energy saving for your home visit www.energystar.gov.

FREE FALL LEAF PICK-UP

The colors of the fall leaves can be beautiful… until they end up on the ground. Fortunately, you can dispose of leaves for free during Aurora’s annual leaf collection program that runs through December 6th.
