Dates to Remember
From the Principal’s Notebook National Day of Action against Bullying & Violence:
At Parade on Monday over 720 students took a stand to say that only kind words and com-
passion for one another is the expectation for behaviour at our school. Every single day we
encourage our students to demonstrate positive behaviour and demonstrate our global rules
of Be SAFE, Be RESPECTFUL and Be RESPONSIBLE. Our students
also use the Friendly 5 and STOP, WALK, TALK as successful
strategies to support our positive school cli-
mate. We have created a Bullying NO WAY
pledge wall in our library that is already popu-
lar with our students coming in regularly to
view it. This week we will be attempting a
whole school NO WAY on our oval that will be
aerial photographed to show our united com-
mitment to creating a bullying and violence free school and
wider community. We are encouraging all students to wear
orange on Friday 16 March in support of this great initiative where we can imagine and take
the next step in creating a world without bullying or violence.

Year 6 Camp This year we have moved our Year 6 camp to Term 1.
Previously this has occurred in Term 4. We have made this
change so our senior students are given the opportunity to build
on their resilience strategies, work with others and establish
effective relationships with staff and their peers. I was lucky
enough to spend the day and have dinner with the students. The
students had an outstanding time. Thank you to our teachers
and parent volunteers for supporting our camp.
School Interviews Online
We have streamlined our parent teacher interviews to an online
system. Our interviews are, in the main, scheduled for Week 9.
As our teachers will have back to back times, we would like to request that all families strictly adhere to the time
frame. If more time is required, please request an additional meeting with your teacher. Thank you for connecting
with our staff to contribute to your child’s learning journey.

SCHOOL PHOTO DAYS School photo day is next week, Tuesday 20
th and Wednesday 21
st March 2018. Order forms for each child have
been sent home through your child’s classroom teacher. Sibling order forms are available at the School Office. PLEASE CONSIDER ONLINE ORDERING OPTIONS IF POSSIBLE. Online ordering reduces paper waste and reduces the risk of forms being misplaced. Follow the prompts on the paperwork provided by NQ Photography and use the code they provide. If you are dropping a form into the office for collection please do so before the photo day (not on the day) and remember that the Office does not carry change. Instrumental music students, and Sport Captains/Vice Captains are reminded to bring their music / sports shirt for their separate photo. Below is the day and time your child/ren will be photographed. FUN RUN IN TERM 2—Friday 20th April Our school traditionally holds a Fun Run in the early part of the year. This year the Fun Run will be held on Friday 20 April, the first Friday of Term 2. The Fun Run serves our School Community in three ways:
1. It promotes school spirit in a fun and healthy way as Marlins, Crocs, Eagles and Taipans compete for
House points… all participants contribute!
2. It acts as a selection event for the upper school to represent FSS at the Barron River Cross Country trials to be held at St Andrews on 27 April
3. It is used as a fund raiser for the FSS Physical Education Program and sporting equipment for use by
students.
As a reward for participation all students will receive a juice frozie at the end of their run. Sponsorship cards with detailed information will be sent home next week. If every student raises $13.50, we will amass around $10000! All money raised by students is to be returned to the P&C office near the Uniform Shop. The Fun Run is a colourful school event. Parents and carers are encouraged to come along to support the school and cheer on their kids. Mrs Knight & Mrs Haug (P&C)
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Ike Martinez for being selected in the Peninsula 10-12 Years Swimming team. He will now represent the Region at the Queensland State Schools 10-12 Years Swimming Championships in Brisbane later this month. Well done and good luck Ike.
HEAD LICE VIGILANCE We have a couple of classes under attack from dreaded Head Lice. Please, please constantly check and treat your child’s hair for these pests. After initial treatment, check daily using conditioner and a lice comb for at least a week. Up-to-date information is available at the Qld Health website www.health.qld.gov.au/headlice JAPANESE NEWS This week we welcome our second Japanese Assistant Teacher, Koshio Sensei. Please say a friendly “Konnichiwa” to him when you see him around the school this month. He will be staying with us for 3 weeks.
The Japanese are great sports lovers. As well as traditional sports like sumo, karate and judo, baseball and soccer are very popular sports. Whole families tend to spend a day out watching a game so the children are familiarised with if from an early age. The nation is excitedly awaiting the 2020 Olympic Games which they are hosting in Tokyo. Students have been working hard this term settling in to learning Japanese. For some students it is surprising for them to learn that they already knew quite a lot about Japan and its language. TV shows like Pokemon, Yokai Watch and Beyblades originated in Japan. Food like sushi, soba noodles and kakigori (shaved ice) are also from Japan and readily available in Australia. Mitusbishi, Toyota and Honda are famous brand names of Japanese companies. Can you think of any other Japanese things that you and your family know?
