This week, in cohort teams, our classroom teachers have been offline to collaboratively plan their English units for Term 4. I am inspired by the enthusiastic and professional conversations I have witnessed that place the priority on engagement of our students in learning. Furthermore, we are fortunate to be sup- ported by many Regional staff as part of the #Whatever_ it _Takes strategy to refine and re- view our systems to ensure success and engagement for their future. This semester, we will focus on our whole school approach to supporting diverse learners to ensure we are aligned with the Departments Inclusive Education Policy and the Disability Discrimination Act. In the past weeks we have seen students competing in Rotary Speaking com- petitions, delivering presentations on assembly, participating in Book Week activities as well as our Prep fathers day barbeque. Every week our teachers go above and beyond their core work of teaching and learning to provide rich learning and enjoyment for our students. As we approach the end of the term, I remind parents that they are most wel- come at any time to make contact with classroom teachers and our leaders to work in partnership. Our formal interviews will be held at the start of Term 4. Your childs teacher will be in touch should an interview be required. From the Principal’s Notebook

Dear parents / carers and families,

As mentioned in previous newsletters, our staff are focusing their professional learning toward develop-ing a deep knowledge of the Australian Curriculum. This week, in cohort teams, our classroom teachers have been offline to collaboratively plan their English units for Term 4. I am inspired by the enthusiastic and professional conversations I have witnessed that place the priority on engagement of our student’s in learning. Furthermore, we are fortunate to be sup-ported by many Regional staff as part of the #Whatever_ it _Takes strategy to refine and re-view our systems to ensure success and engagement for their future. This semester, we will focus on our whole school approach to supporting diverse learners to ensure we are aligned with the Departments Inclusive Education Policy and the Disability Discrimination Act.

In the past weeks we have seen students competing in Rotary Speaking com-petitions, delivering presentations on assembly, participating in Book Week activities as well as our Prep father’s day barbeque. Every week our teachers go above and beyond their core work of teaching and learning to provide rich learning and enjoyment for our students.

As we approach the end of the term, I remind parents that they are most wel-come at any time to make contact with classroom teachers and our leaders to work in partnership. Our formal interviews will be held at the start of Term 4. Your child’s teacher will be in touch should an interview be required. I look forward to the commencement of our Year 3-4 swimming program this Friday.

IMPORTANT NEWS

P&C Meeting

17th September at 6pm

Page 2 Ph: (07) 4058 9222 E: [email protected]

MUSIC NIGHT 2018 On Wednesday 12 September, the school will be hosting Music Night, to showcase the talents of our students involved in Instrumental Music. The program for the evening will feature pieces from the String Orchestra’s, Band and Percussion group. Everyone is welcome to come along to this event that will be held in The Canopy from 6pm – 7pm.

CYBER SAFETY INFORMATION SESSION FOR YR 5-6’s On Thursday afternoon 6th September, our Year 5 & 6 students will be participating in a ‘cyber safety’ program presented by our school’s adopt-a-cop, Senior Constable Heidi Marek. The following topics will be discussed during the sixty minute session:

• Using strong passwords

• Terms and conditions for gaming/chat sites and phone apps

• Safe searching and viewing

• What you say online/sharing information

• Geotagging

• Cyberbullying

• Online grooming

• Getting help

With the increasing use of social media, it is essential that young people learn strategies to protect themselves, whilst engaged in online activities. Handouts will be given to our students to pass on to their parents. It would be enormously valuable if parents could take the time to read the handouts and have a follow-up discussion with their children on this issue. A huge thank you is extended to Senior Constable Marek for addressing this very important topic with our students. Hopefully, our students will not encounter any of the negative side of engaging on line - however I am sure this information will prove invaluable if they do. NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS On Wednesday 19th September we are celebrating NAIDOC day with a morning concert. We would like palm fronds donated to help decorate our stage and canopy area for the event. Please drop off all palm fronds and in particular coconut fronds if possible to the back of the canopy area (near Mr Hornett’s shed). We need as many as possible as they will be used later in the day for weaving demonstrations. Thanks in advance, NAIDOC Committee PAYING INVOICES – BPOINT When paying an invoice issued by the school we recommend using BPOINT. For an easy reference on how to use BPOINT refer to the attachment with today’s newsletter. Using BPOINT means that the invoice is paid instantly, you receive an immediate receipt for payment and you can manage payments from your phone or home/work computer. However, always refer to the due date for payment as reports are provided to the school the following day. BPOINT is the preferred method of payment at Freshwater State School. SCIENCE & SUSTAINABILITY ARTICLE My name is Sydney Richter and I am a member of the Science and Sustainability Program 2018. My project is about protecting our environment and in particular native wildlife, by keeping cats inside at night. This also means that a cat is less likely to get a disease, ticks or other problem inside their bodies. Did you know that scientists have rated cats Australia’s number one threat to our native wildlife? Cats have directly led to the extinction of 26 species. That’s a lot of species and a lot of our precious animals, gone! Forever.

Remember - responsible cats need responsible owners.
