From the Principal’s Desk On Friday 26 February we held a very successful Kadina Memorial Student Council and House Captain Induction Ceremony at the Copper Coast Sports and Leisure Centre. It was pleasing to see the number of students nominate for leadership positions within the school, and we sincerely value the contribution they make to school life during the year. I congratulate all who took the opportunity to be involved in student leadership, whether as a member of the Kadina Memorial Student Council or as House Captains. It is great to see you taking on a leadership role in the school, both you and the school will benefit from this. Special mentions to: Senior School Captain Paris Schilling, Middle School Captain William Hunter, and Junior Captain Shayla Herbert who all spoke to the assembly about their KMSC sub-school goals for this year. Thank you to all family members who attended the induction, it was great to see you there and I’m sure the students appreciated your presence. I also thank the students and staff of Kadina Memorial. The students displayed excellent listening skills throughout the ceremony, showing their understanding of the occasion’s importance. Staff coordination, flexibility and support leading up to and including the day were exemplary. Thank you to our special guest, Ms Margie Arnold for her words to the student body, Mrs Zelly Ritter, Ms Robyn Paterson, Mrs Karmela Kleinig and Mrs Chris Morrison for facilitating the election processes, running student training days and organising students for the assembly. Principal’s Report Continued:

Final KMS 2015 Year 12 Awards At our Induction Assembly, we also presented the final KMS academic awards to the 2015 Year 12 students.

These included all students who achieved an ATAR over 90, Year 12 DUX (Southwood Medal) and Runner-Up Dux.

Congratulations to 2015 Year 12 Runner-Up DUX Caitlin Adams and 2015 Year 12 DUX Southwood Medal winner Liam Martin

Sports Day I look forward to seeing you at our Sports Days. We anticipate a fantastic and enjoyable two days and I thank all Sport and Recreation Committee members for their excellent organisation and preparation.

Some notes for parents about sports day:

All students are expected to attend and we expect them to conduct themselves and represent their school well on the day.

Sportsmanship and striving for personal bests, alongside of teamwork and lots of fun are features of the day.

Participation is important, with students helping supervise, volunteering in the canteen, and having a go at events, whether they are expert at them or not!

Safety Reminders on Sports Day Please ensure you have: hats, water, sunscreen, sunglasses and shoes!

Make sure you take in fluid regularly during the day, make use of the shade when not participating and reapply sunscreen often. All students are required to wear shoes whilst competing and we would like to see all students in shirts with sleeves.

Parent and Family Support Needed Car Drop Off area: We are continuing to receive

reports of unsafe behaviour by students and parents when collecting or bringing students to school. We do not have an ideal structure for this so we all need to be careful when picking up or dropping off students on Doswell Terrace. We encourage all to use the school crossing where possible and not to walk in and around cars at this time of day.

Phone calls to students during school day: We remind parents any communication with students during the day should be through the Front Office. We have had several instances this year of students receiving calls from parents during lessons. For obvious reasons this is not appropriate and we ask for support in this matter.

Taking Student Photos/Videos: With Sports Day approaching it is timely to remind all school community members we need to be mindful of what images we take and what we do with these. Yes you can photograph and video your children, however we ask you to be respectful of others’ opinions and wishes regarding this matter and keep all photography localised only to your children. We also respectfully suggest images of other children are not be posted on social media without student and parental permission.

Social Media: Recently we have been notified of some inappropriate social media usage in the school community, directed at the school and its staff. As a school we are committed to teaching students to be cyber safe and to make safe, responsible choices about their online behaviour. We ask all parents and families to support the School’s cyber safety messages and positive use of social media with their children.

Please refrain from using social media to comment on school related incidents or to ‘vent’ about staff, students and their families. If you wish to discuss school incidents or have concerns about any school related manner, please arrange an appointment with a member of the school leadership team. Respectful communication is essential to building a safe, orderly and productive learning environment. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Pupil Free Day: A reminder our first Pupil Free

Day for 2016 will be held on Thursday 24 March, the day before Good Friday.

Kadina Memorial Governing Council AGM

Wednesday 30 March at 7pm, Hospitality Centre

We can’t do it without you.

As I mentioned previously education is a partnership between home and school and in order to do it well we need your advice and input about what you think would work for your child and the student body as a whole. It is fair to say we all want what is best for our children.

How do you get that?

One way is to join Governing Council and become a member of a committed group of parents, like you, who meet once a month for a couple of hours to discuss, inform and decide on a range of issues to do with the school and its direction.

Governing Council members contribute to and advise on school policy matters, school improvement, finance issues, asset management, school systems and communication methods. They also help at many school events such as Sports Day, end of year assemblies and celebrations.

What’s in it for me?

It’s a big list, starting with supporting not only your own child’s education but that of others.

Council members describe a sense of satisfaction at seeing a job well done and an ongoing feeling of achievement as they walk through the school, knowing it is a better place for the students and staff to learn as a result of their efforts.

We have 10 positions available for parents of our students on Kadina Memorial School Governing Council. Current councillors up for re-election are Scott Mercer, Rachel Larwood, Andrew Pearce,

Stewart McIntosh, Mark Northcott, and Wade della Torre. Continuing members who were elected for a two year term include; Anna Wuttke, Lynne-Marie Power, Charisse Peterson, Amelia Phillips and Kate Monger.

Where do I sign up?

I invite all interested parents to attend the meeting if you wish to stand for Governing Council.

To nominate please do any of the following:

• Complete the tear off nomination slip below and return it to the Front Office at the school, • Email me at the school: [email protected] • Self nominate at the first meeting Thanking you in advance, Dean Angus Principal

Above, Primary recorder students take the opportunity to rehearse their instruments in the playground during play time.

R-6 Corner - What is ‘Words Their Way?’

‘More than just a Spelling Program’ This year our Year 3-6 students are engaging in a program new to KMS - Words Their Way: a developmental spelling, phonics and vocabulary program focusing on spelling patterns as well as examining and manipulating words, not memorizing them. Students will think critically about words and work on transferring these skills to their reading and writing. Words Their Way focuses on teaching students how to spell, decode new words, and to improve their word recognition speed. To accomplish this goal, we are teaching students how to examine words to learn the regularities and patterns in spelling irregularities (what we call ‘oddball words’). The simple process of sorting words into categories is the heart of this word study program. When students sort words, they are engaged in the active process of searching, comparing, contrasting, and analyzing. Word sorts help students organise what they know about words and to form generalisations they can then apply to new words they encounter in their reading/writing. Please keep an eye out for a flyer inviting you to a Parent Workshop explaining ‘Words Their Way’ later in the term. In the meantime if you would like more information there are many accessible online websites. Kylie Williams Primary Years Coordinator

Middle School I loved being a part of the Induction Assembly last Friday, seeing students take their oaths to be members of the KMSC and leaders within their House. My allegiances do lie with Heath but I thoroughly enjoy the build-up to Sports Day, being a part of the day and seeing students compete. As a teacher it provides me with an opportunity to work with students outside of the classroom and see them in a different light. I also enjoy seeing students working across year levels/age groups with the common aim of supporting their house. As a parent it is a great way of getting involved with the school and connecting with your child, and also their teachers. Be sure to attend – it is a spectacular day. Regards Tarryn Germein Head of Middle School

YOUR CHILDREN and the BUSHFIRE SEASON Kadina Memorial School has a ‘low risk’ bushfire rating. This means on days of forecast catastrophic fire danger rating, our school will remain open.

Students travelling by bus or taxi. On days forecast as catastrophic fire danger, the school bus routes and taxi services travelling through the affected Fire Ban Districts will be cancelled for the period of the forecast.

If the bus picks up your child/children in the morning and during the day the forecast changes to

catastrophic, your child/children will be returned to their stop in the afternoon unless you are notified otherwise by text.

If a bushfire is reported in the area during the day the

Principal will contact local emergency services for advice regarding accessibility of roads travelled by school buses/taxis. The affected runs will not leave school until the roads are declared safe by emergency services authorities.

If buses/taxis are cancelled families are notified via a text message and facebook. Students will be supervised at school until buses can run or students are collected by parents.

It is important your contact information is up to date. Please phone the Front Office on 8821 0100 or email [email protected] to update any changes.

Unit News Last week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, the Unit students were fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in swimming instruction at the Copper Coast Sport Leisure Centre pool. It has been a few years since our students have been able to access swimming lessons so parents and students were very excited about being able to ‘get back in the water’. The students were divided into three groups and had 1-1 instruction, which enabled individualised programs to occur in the areas of water familiarisation, movement and safety in the water, as well as stroke development. I would like to thank Debbie Wright the DECD Swimming and Aquatics Operational Manager for helping with the organisation, Natalie Hewett and her enthusiastic instructors, Tess, Laura, Rowan and Simone, the CCSLC for use of the pool and the Unit staff for organising and supervising the students in my absence. We look forward to offering swimming instruction again later in the year. Sandy Mumford Unit Coordinator

Senior School Congratulations to Tahnee Measday and Kimberley Burgan who were presented with a Merit Award (A+) for their Research Projects in 2015, while both in Year 11. Tahnee’s Research Project focused on how premature births affect baby development, while Kimberley’s Research studied the effects of sports drinks on all aspects of teenager health.

Year 10 Viticulture – grape harvest Year 10 students from Mr Nick Anargyros’ class with the help of local wine-makers Fran and Bruno Goryan from Goryan Estate, harvested the Shiraz grapes from the school vineyard last week. Following the harvest Fran and Bruno took the grapes to their facilities in Wallaroo where Mrs Wait’s class were able to test the pH, sugar content and monitor the fermentation process. This Viticulture Unit has broadened students’ understanding of Agriculture Business Enterprise. We would like to thank Fran and Bruno for opening their facilities for our students and guiding them through the harvesting process.

Kadina Memorial School (KMS) is a place always providing opportunities for its students.

An example of this is the KMS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Home Learning Club, which operates weekly.

KMS ATSI Home Learning Club offers a place for students to work in a supportive environment as well as providing students the opportunity to receive one to one support with their learning.

Nigel Raymond, (Aboriginal Community Education Officer), Bruce Woodcock (Student Services Officer) and myself, Janine McKay (Aboriginal Education Teacher), are on hand to assist students with their learning.

KMS ATSI Home Learning Club also provides students with a nutritional snack, to recharge their bodies and minds, thus enabling some quality learning to take place.

Any ATSI families who have not yet taken advantage of the opportunities the Home Learning Club provides, please contact Nigel or Janine in the KMS ATSI office, or return the consent form below to myself or Nigel.

Welcome to KMS

Japanese Exchange Student Kadina Memorial School extends a warm welcome to our new Exchange student from Japan, Ran Murano. Ran here on a year-long exchange studying Year 11, is staying with Tracy and Graeme Ingham and their family in Kadina. Ran addressed the KMS Induction Assembly last Friday, telling a crowd of more than 1,000 students, family and friends how she was looking forward to meeting new friends, patting a koala and a kangaroo, as well as eating traditional Australian food. Her hobbies are snow skiing and playing the guitar, which she likes to practise regularly. One of Ran’s goals while staying in Australia is to improve her English. Congratulations Ran for having the courage to address the large crowd, impressing us greatly with your composure, emerging English language skills, and your bright, friendly nature.

Staff Profile: Dylan Agnew, Senior Mathematics

Welcome to Mr Dylan Agnew who started his teaching career at KMS this year as a Graduate from the University of Adelaide.

Our two Sports Days are fast approaching and there has been a lot of work by our student leaders and staff to ensure everything and everyone is organised for these two mammoth days. The R-6 Sports Day is on Thursday 10th March and the 7-12 day is on Friday 11th March. All events on both days will be on the main KMS oval or adjacent basketball court area. Please check your program for times of events, and specific locations. There will be central time keeping for the R-6 day to ensure smooth transitions from one event to another. With the 7-12 events we try hard to adhere to scheduled times. The results from both days are totalled to determine which house is the overall winner, and will have their name engraved on the Sports Day trophy. The cup will be awarded to the Primary House Captains and Vice Captains of the winning team at the end of day one and they will then bring the cup to the opening of the 7-12 day. The final presentation will occur at approximately 2.50 pm on Friday 11th March. This Friday, 4th March, all Year 3-9 students will be timed over 100m in preparation for Sports Day. All students who run on Friday will receive a house point for participation. These times will be used to determine who the 100m finalists are by age group, regardless of house, for Thursday afternoon. The eight fastest runners will compete in the age group final. They will also be used to determine the Division A and Division B runners and the 4 x 100m relay runners for the 7-12 days. Thank you to parents who have indicated that they are willing to help out on either Sports Day. Any further offers of assistance would be welcome. Good luck to everyone involved. 1TM Shared Reading – Buddy Class

Student Corner: We like to share student

learning with you, big and small milestones from the R-12 world. Today we feature a very thought provoking poem by one of our Year 5 students.

I Wish I wish, I wish with all my heart To hatch a little dragon’s egg And outside shall come a purple small dragon That will give me companionship Throughout the years.

I wish, so, for a magical, mystical machine That would be able to transport me And others into movies, DVDs and TV shows and so on.

I wish, to own A great big chocolate factory To invent marvellous things, But not just chocolate, But candles of wonder To make people happy.

I wish that all over the world Terrible wars would end So that everyone was in peace With one another And that world debates could be solved.

I wish dearly that There was no pollution in the world And that there were more trees, Animals and insects So that the world could get healthy again, More life would flourish and The world could just be happy, nice And peaceful.

I wish that there were No homeless people And that world hunger was resolved So that everybody was happy, Because all of this is sad.

For the convenience of our school community, school photos can be ordered and paid for online to advancedlife using a secure online platform. Orders placed online DO NOT require an envelope, cash/cheques or paperwork returned to school. Envelope Orders: photos can also be purchased in the traditional manner using an envelope, with cash/cheque enclosed. The preference of our school is that orders and payments be made online, as this reduces the administration and associated security issues related to the return of cash & envelopes on photo day. These envelopes will be issued closer to Photo Day. Please note: KMS WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY PHOTO MONEY FOR SCHOOL PHOTOS.

To place and pay for your order visit www.advancedlife.com.au and enter the code- YA6 J6Y MGT This code can also be found

printed on your envelope. Please be aware that:

Sibling/Family Photos can be ordered online or via envelope. To ensure a smoothly run photo day, online orders for

Sibling/Family Photos will be cut off at 12.00 a.m. the night before our photo day to allow a list of students that require

Sibling/Family Photographs taken to be compiled. Sibling photos can still be ordered after the online cut off date by

collecting an envelope from the office and returning the envelope on photo day with your payment enclosed.

All online orders should be placed on or before our day of photography.

The online code above may also be used to order sports and other group photos.

All orders placed online will be delivered to the school for collection
