FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dr Mark Merry

I loved school. I enjoyed the classes (well most of them anyway) and made some lifelong friendships in the process. My experience of schooling was somewhat simpler though than what our young people experience today. The most exotic school excursion I went on was to Launceston in Tasmania which in those days was considered to be an overseas trip. Already this year we have welcomed our ski team back from Europe and we continue our wonderful relationships with schools in Japan, China and France. It’s not just travel though where things have changed. The latest technology in the classroom was a video player and photocopying was considered to be reasonably high tech. Today our students wield handheld devices which could have put Apollo 11 on the Moon and consider a Skype conversation with students half a world away as relatively commonplace. At school we could just about muster a

respectable guitar quartet to herald the arrival of the official party at assembly. Today it’s the symphony orchestra or the symphonic band who add the suitable level of gravitas to the occasion. Once facilities used to be a little rudimentary with the only air-conditioner in the school being strategically placed in the Principal’s office… Facilities in schools have certainly come a long way. Yet, I loved school. It’s not primarily about what we have but rather who we are with. I had some truly great and inspiring teachers and classmates who were great friends. Ask students of this generation and they too will say that these are the most important things. Our students and those who work with them are our greatest resource. They are the ones who make the school day what it is and the whole schooling experience such a memorable one. It is great to come to work each day to such a beautiful environment, impressive facilities and resources in which to teach and learn. It’s even better coming to school working with the people we do…

CHAPLAIN’S REFLECTION Mr Paul Joy Chaplain STEP OUTSIDE YOUR NORMAL I've spent most of my week in the CBD as part of the Link@9 City program. Once again our students have represented themselves, their families and their school well. It is a tiring week; the city is a big place! For staff and students alike, spending extended time in the city is outside of our normal. There are new things to discover, places to explore, things to observe, sights and sounds and smells to experience. The city has a rhythm of its own and it can take some getting used to. One aspect of city life that jumps out at me each time I visit for several days in a row, as a visitor in my own capital city, is the anonymity that seems to exist. Swarms of people sit and stand side by side and face to face in relatively close proximity, travelling together on various forms of transport to, in and around the city without engaging with one another. In the heat and humidity of this week, I've found myself wedged deeper inside other people's personal bubble than I've been with some my own family. I've literally rubbed shoulders with people from all walks of life, shared their space, and breathed the same air. And yet, in the main, it seems this is meant to be done without interacting or sometimes even acknowledging one another.

If a group of people hop on a tram and continue their conversation, as I did with groups of students or colleagues, other travellers appear bemused that we'd be interrupting their norm. Evidently, we're not meant to engage with others. Mostly, people are engaged by whatever they have playing through their earbuds or on the screen of their smart-phone. I've often times found myself amused by observing 'near misses' as people negotiate the busy city streets without looking up from their phone.

I acknowledge that I'm a relative outsider in this busy urban environment, and therefore naive as to what's possible and what levels of interaction we should be happy with. But are we satisfied with a normal that sees it possible for someone to be so anonymous whilst being so close to so many other people? It makes me wonder what things I need to intentionally shake up in my normal. What rhythms or ways have I gotten so comfortable with that I settle for less than best? Do I take the time to find out the name of the person who sees me safely across the road each morning? Do I connect with people and look them in the eye when I say thank-you for giving me the correct change? Do I take time to listen and appreciate what my children are sharing when they tell me about their day? Do I value the beautiful environment I work in or do I take it for granted? Do I treat people with respect? It is easy to let the normal rhythm of daily life simply drift along and become comfortable with normal. I don't want to become too comfortable. I want to make the most of every interaction, every conversation, every chance meeting. I want to be intentional about how I show up. I write in my journal fairly regularly: Wherever I Am - Be There! Sometimes I need to get outside of my normal routine to remind me.

ELEVATE EDUCATION – YEAR 10 EXPERIENCE On the 23rd of February, Year Ten was visited by Adam from the Elevate Education group with a seminar on time management and beating procrastination. The presentation was thoroughly enjoyed by the year level as Adam entertained us with stories and personal experiences regarding the many hardships of VCE and time management. We were each given a booklet to fill in a variety of tips and techniques for things such as helping avoid procrastination and realistically organise our study schedules as Adam explained how each of the pages worked accompanied by an amusing anecdote. During the session we covered a variety of topics all in relation to the subject of time management; these included working around school and extra-curricular commitments and social events to be able to finish study without having to take out the things you enjoy in life; ways to improve your exam material in order for it to stand out in VCE by taking advantage of study groups and collecting additional information to include and some much needed techniques to help prevent procrastination, something we were all eager to learn. We each walked away from the presentation with at least one piece of extremely helpful advice that we could each hold onto and apply to our own experiences with study in the lead up to and during VCE. With a booklet full of new knowledge to use as a guide to success in our learning, the beginning of the Elevate program gives promising potential as a much appreciated and enjoyed experience to help us all become accustomed to the somewhat daunting thought of VCE. ELEVATE EDUCATION – YEAR 11 EXPERIENCE On Friday the 26th of February, as part of the VCE Plus program, all Year 11 students attended a study skills incursion hosted by Elevate Education entitled “Study Sensei”. The focus of the session was on extending our abilities of note taking, memory techniques, clear ways to structure our study plan, and ultimately, ways of getting those extra few marks that place you above the majority. Elevate Education has been running for 12 years as an organisation to help “unlock the secret to the final years of school”. With theories backed by years of research and fronted by a team of young presenters, Elevate Education strive to convey the information they have gathered about high achieving students to students all around Australia through “short, sharp” seminars taken over the course of the upper years of high school. Adam, our presenter, attempted to revolutionise our note taking practices by encouraging us to handwrite notes, and take out as many unnecessary words as possible. He highlighted to us that a Cambridge study stated that most people could reduce the amount of words in their notes by 80%. Adam also explained to us the most effective way of memorising your notes, which included reading them at set intervals afterwards and once a month reading the entirety of your notes. We were also told about a number of places to get further reading documents, such as Google scholar and university databases. “Study Sensei” was yet another successful incursion from Elevate Education that all students found very accessible and engaging, and will most definitely help us as we travel along our VCE journey. Blakely Mclean-Davies, 11CLH ANNUAL GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL The 85th Good Friday Appeal takes place on Friday 25 March. Thank you to the students that have volunteered to assist with this year’s appeal. STUDENT ENTERPRISE

Can you help Student Enterprise? We're looking for families that can donate products or services to help us raise money for So They Can (www.sotheycan.org).

Formally commencing at the start of this year, the newly formed Student Enterprise has begun to discover the world of business. This fantastic opportunity, founded by Yarra Old Grammarian (YOG), Penny Swan gives fourteen Year 10 students an early insight into

the business world by encompassing the knowledge of numerous mentors who have previously graduated from Yarra and become successful in their business careers.

Our mentorship has extended from a tour and interview with the CEO of Country Road, Mr Matt Keo (YOG, 1990) at their headquarters, to being fortunate enough to have mentors make the time to visit us at the School or Skype in to check our progress and guide us in the right direction. Guided by their tutorship, Student Enterprise are well underway with our fundraising plans and goals, with our main focus being on our assigned charity, So They Can. We aim to incorporate the community in our endeavours to raise money for this worthwhile cause, and are currently discussing prospective events to organise. We have found the year so far to be productive and an invaluable learning experience, and look forward to see where our plans will take us in the very near future. Any queries or offer of assistance can be directed to the team via [email protected]

LINK@9 – CITY EXPERIENCE Is our Melbourne Central Business District ‘Bold, Inspirational, and Sustainable?’ Our Year 9 students have been asking themselves this significant question, this week in the CBD. This is the Melbourne City Council’s vision statement, and our students are testing the council’s progress.

We are investigating six key areas: Is our city For the People? Is it Prosperous? Is it Creative? Is it a Knowledge city? Does the city Connect us? Is it Eco-Friendly? Essentially, we want to find out for ourselves, if Melbourne is a meaningful place to go, and if it is planning to be relevant into the future for a range of people’s needs.

Page 12: FROM THE PRINCIPAL - yvg.vic.edu.au · Jemimah Lake, Amy Leslie, Bec Mauger , Casey Murphy, James Petropoulos, Nicole Rey nolds, Sarah Steiner, Danielle Tait and Edwin Van Ravesteyn

We have spent four weeks back at School preparing for this week, learning about travelling using the various forms of public transport, developing our project management skills and our ability to delegate tasks to each of our group members, in order to achieve one group plan for the week. What a growth experience! Some terrific learning adventures so far include: -managing train delays and communicating in a timely fashion with group members and with our teachers when we need help, - working out our ‘North’ from our ‘South’ via trial and error!, - using various maps to navigate, - managing our transition travel time effectively between venues, - lunch with an adult parent who works in the city, to learn about their life in the city, - finding the strength to break away from fast food purchases, to try out something a little more cultured!

Locations visited include Indoor Rock Climbing, Eureka Skydeck, the arcade laneways, Southbank, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Town Hall, many of the CBD’s hidden treasures, Blender Studio on Franklin street for a street art experience, a tour of Melbourne’s street art lanes, exercising in various locations around the CBD, Old Melbourne Gaol, the Victorian Institute of Sport, a Yarra river cruise, Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne Aquarium, The Tan, Chinatown, and much more. On Friday we will conclude our week in the city with a big breakfast in the CBD, a chapel session on the banks of the Yarra River, and an adventure race around the CBD to test out our navigation skills. Learning by doing. A great start to our LINK@9 journey in 2016.

GREAT PERFORMANCES Keeley Marx (grade 6) has been selected in the Golf Victoria Girls’ U18 State Team to compete in the Border Challenge this weekend – an annual Victoria v South Australia teams event. It will be Keeley’s first senior Golf Victoria team. The tournament is being held in Portland. We wish her the best of luck. On Saturday night our champion U17 girls relay team represented the AGSV in the 2016 Schools Relay Challenge at Lakeside Stadium. The race was part of the IAAF Melbourne World Challenge series. Nicole Reynolds, Jacqui Trotto, Ashleigh Newham and Sophie Manning enjoyed the experience and embraced the challenge of racing against the other top U17 girls teams in the state. (Photo attached) TEST CRICKETER HELPS THE BOYS AT YARRA VALLEY GRAMMAR

Ray Bright (who represented Australia on the test arena during the 1980’s) has maintained a high profile in the game, particularly his desire to assist young players and up and coming spin bowlers. Ray was on hand on Wednesday to give a number of boys some fantastic advice and tips on how to improve their game. We thank both Ray and the Australian Cricketers Association for making the opportunity possible.

JUNIOR SCHOOL Mr Chris Lawson Deputy Principal – Head of Junior School We have certainly had a burst of hot weather recently which has meant tired and less patient school aged children, so hopefully next week will see some cooler temperatures. Our ELC students on the other hand were so excited with the fact that hot weather meant they could run under the sprinklers, slide down slippery slides and play games in the wet as part of their study of water. Even the teachers enjoyed their time! Professor Maths joined us on Wednesday and ran activities for our Year 1 to Year 3 students. Combining Maths with some magic, the children worked in groups to solve problems and have fun with their Maths. Puzzles, patterns, construction and mazes were set up in Foundation Hall and children moved around these tasks in small groups. Thanks to Mrs Begley, our Numeracy Co-ordinator for organising this incursion. Our Year 5 students head to camp next week, following the long weekend. They will experience camp out, talks and demonstrations from an aboriginal educator, a number of fun and challenging water and land based activities and most all, fun! We wish them well and look forward to hearing their stories when they return. Year 5 will present our Final assembly on Wednesday, 23 March, commencing at 2:30 pm. Our Regional Swimming team consisting of Johnny Turner, Patrick Zhang, Joshua Galstians, Charlie Heath, Fergus King, Joel Glassborow, Logan Kellet-Jackson, Byron Shepherd and Jessica Lee performed very well and all managed to make the finals. This is the best result I can remember with such a large number of students getting through to this level and we congratulate them for their efforts. On a similar note, I congratulate Keeley Marx who has been selected to play in the Golf Victoria, Under 18 team and will play in the Border Challenge this weekend against South Australia. Best wishes Keeley!

PARKING REMINDERS I ask parents NOT to park too close to school crossings and especially where NO STANDING signs are placed. For safety reasons, we need clear visibility before and after crossings so that small children are not walking across the road from behind high vehicles, which hides them from the view of oncoming vehicles. We have noticed that some parents have moved the no standing signs or parked right next to them and this is unsafe. All parking should only happen in designated parking bays. Similarly, please do not cue up in the entrance to the main carpark on Foundation Drive, as this encourages children to cross the driveway away from the crossing which is dangerous. I ask this for the safety of our students, staff and parents. UPCOMING DATES

JUNIOR MUSIC NOTES Mrs Rachel Schmidli Junior School Music FOOD WINE AND MUSIC CONCERT SATURDAY 19 MARCH The Junior School Choir and the Year 3 Choir will perform at this wonderful whole School concert. It is a fabulous opportunity to see our major ensembles from each section of the School perform in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. The parents will spend the first half of evening sampling food and wine from the region, mixing with other parents and attending a silent auction. Then they will join the performers in the PAC for the concert. This is a major fundraising event for YARRA Music and tickets are available through the Trybooking link http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=123278 #Please remember to book a performer ticket for all Junior school performers as once they have performed in the first item they will be seated with you. The Year 3 Choir and Junior School Choir arrive at the Junior Music room between 6.30pm and 7.00pm. Year 3 Choir will need to wear dark jeans/ leggings, hair neatly tied back with a red ribbon and clean sneakers. We will supply a red choir t- shirt. They will get changed when they arrive on Saturday night and can wear the T- shirt home. Please wash and return to school the following week. The Junior School Choir will arrive in their ‘Oliver’ street urchin clothing and remain in this for the evening. (School trousers or leggings, school shoes, a shirt with rolled sleeves, a scarf around the neck and vest, a peaked cap or messed up hair are just some easy suggestions on what to wear). Both choirs will need to bring a substantial healthy snack (not chips, chocolate and sweets!) and water bottle. We are looking forward to a sensational concert!
