From the Principal’s continued.

2016 WALKATHONThe annual Walkathon is one of the many examples of Mercy in action at St Aloysius College. Thank you to the whole school community for supporting the St Aloysius College Walkathon. It was a wonderful day and the students entered into the spirit of the day with great enthusiasm.

Thank you to the family members and friends who sponsored our students for the walk. This year, so far the students have raised $12,614. We would appreciate if any final sponsorship money could be paid as soon as possible. The money will support the works of the Sisters of Mercy throughout Australia and overseas.

Thank you to all the parents and friends who gave up their time to help on the day either by walking with a class or assisting with the barbeque.

Principals from Catholic schools across SA gathered last Friday to hear from Simon Birmingham, Minister for Education and Training, and Kate Ellis, Shadow Minister for Education and Early Childhood and Member for Adelaide. As we prepare for the election, both major parties were given the opportunity to articulate their plans for school education. Specific questions for SA residents relate to the funding of Year 7 students as secondary students and concerns around nationally consistent data collection for students with disability, amongst others. Further information about Catholic school funding is available at http://www.schoolfundingfacts.com/

Year 7 students took part in our first Canberra trip, spending last week in the nation’s capital. With many unique opportunities for learning about Civics and Citizenship, the group also found time to have a lot of fun, and getting to know one another better in a new setting. We thank the teachers who not only supervised the trip, but were the driving force behind developing the program. As with many new initiatives, the commitment and innovation of our teachers is central to positive learning outcomes.

Year 8 and 9 students had their best dance moves on display at the SAC Social last Friday night. These occasions are a chance to build on friendships forming at Year 9 level through the shared dancing lessons with CBC, and allow students to socialise in a new setting. Once again, it wouldn’t be possible without the Years 8 and 9 Coordinators, Ms Rachel Gould and Ms Rebecca Kane, and the teachers from those year levels who supervised the event.

The performing arts have been on display over the last few weeks, with our Music Soiree and Year 10 and 11 Drama performances. I reflected as I watched these young women take the stage, that these experiences can be highly significant in developing confidence. The sense of collaboration is also strong in both music and drama ensembles and learning those critical skills of working together is so valuable. I would like to acknowledge the many parents who came along to enjoy these performances – your presence certainly nurtures the creativity of the performers.

Sir Ken Robinson, an internationally recognised leader in the significance of creativity and innovation in education, encourages schools to explore the conditions that lead us to live lives that are filled with passion, confidence, and personal achievement. When I look at the breadth of experiences on offer to students at SAC, I feel confident that students will find and pursue their passions and be encouraged to express themselves in a variety of ways in order to fully develop their creativity.

Our Year 12 students will sit their mid-year examinations very soon. Mid-year examinations provide valuable practice for the final, externally set examinations at the end of the year. All students are encouraged to treat these mid-year examinations seriously. It is essential that students revise their work fully and are well prepared.During the examination period students are expected to attend each of their scheduled examinations in correct school uniform but are not required at school at other times. Students who study subjects without an examination component may be required to attend lessons during the examination week. Individual subject teachers will inform the students of any arrangements. If a student is unable to attend a scheduled examination, it is essential that the school be contacted as soon as possible. Absence from an examination due to illness requires a medical certificate. You are reminded that Year 12 reports will not be available at the end of Term 2 but will be distributed to students on Monday 1 August to enable the mid-year examination results to be included. The examination schedule is as follows:

Animals at SchoolIn recent years the number of students at St Aloysius College with allergies has increased significantly, in line with what has been happening in the wider community. We have recently reviewed some of our College policies in light of our duty of care and in response to increased allergies amongst students. Consequently we have developed an Animal on College Premises Policy for the safety and health of our students. The policy comes into effect as of now.

Animals on College Premises PolicyThe College recognises its obligation to take all reasonable precautions to protect the safety of its students, staff, visitors and contractors. A number of students have severe allergies to animal fur, feathers or animal saliva. There is also a risk of a person being bitten, scratched or attacked, as well as the risk of the spread of disease. Other considerations include health, cultural, religious, safety considerations, or if it would unreasonably interfere with the day to day operation of the College or contravene any statutory provision.

The intent of this policy is to ensure that our College grounds remain clean and safe for all. Dogs and other animals are not permitted on College grounds unless prior written approval is granted by the Principal or a Deputy Principal. This policy does allow for animals to visit classrooms, but only for specific educational purposes. Furthermore, the policy only allows animals in classrooms with the prior written approval of the Principal or a Deputy Principal.

Accredited assistance animals (eg accredited guide dog or hearing dog) are generally allowed access to College grounds unless there is a safety or health concern for a student, staff member, contractor or regular visitor. Where a student or parent/guardian intends to bring an accredited assistance animal onto College grounds, prior written approval is required.

Any animals brought onto College grounds (approved by the College as above) must be appropriately restrained at all times either by a lead or in an enclosed compartment. Dogs must be controlled at all times on a lead by a person at least 16 years of age and able to restrain the dog. The animal must have a temperament suited to being around children and crowds. Those animals that have difficult temperaments and are fearful, timid or dominant should not be brought onto the College grounds.

Hygiene of animals must be maintained at all times. Hygiene with respect to dogs and other animals is maintained through:

• appropriate cleaning of any toileting behaviour (carry plastic bags to do this) and removal of the refuse from College grounds for disposal

• keeping dogs and animals out of play areas

• Only healthy dogs and animals are allowed on College grounds (to prevent cross-infection to other pets etc)

• keeping dogs and animals from licking or other means of transfer of any infection.

In such circumstances referred to above, the College reserves the right to restrict or prohibit the presence of animals on College premises.

LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE!

On Friday 3 June, the primary students were fortunate to welcome three talented puppeteers from Camp Quality to St Aloysius College. The puppets, Kylie, Dean and Melissa shared a message of hope and compassion with our students through an interactive and engaging performance, educating students about cancer and cancer treatment.

I learnt that when someone has cancer and another person wants to shake hands with them, they don’t get cancer off of the other person. Alannah Hefford R-THI enjoyed the show. It was funny when the puppets knocked their heads together when they were talking. I learned to be brave and that everyone has a super power. My super power is drawing. Lavanmee Sebastian 1DS It was exciting. It was also fun to learn about things. It was funny, especially the part when the puppet Melissa went crazy doing ‘Whip It Nay Nay’ because dancing was her super power. I also liked the part when the villain came in and was doing funny things. I learnt some big words. They are ‘chemotherapy’ and ‘positivity’. Imogen Vigor 2LII thought the Camp Quality puppets were really funny and very creative. I liked the bit when Ms Brunetti was called up to dance. She was really funny. I believe that laughter is the best medicine! Sienna Kellermann- Clarke 3EGMy favourite part about the show was seeing the puppets dance. It was really entertaining. I learnt more about cancer and how important laughter is for people who have been diagnosed. Mikayla Murray 6SHI thought it was fun to watch and it educated people about cancer. I liked it when Ms Brunetti dressed up in a costume and defeated cancer. Sana Ali 5JA

SECONDARY SPORT

Our winter sport teams are well into their seasons with our lacrosse team completing Round 5 last weekend. Our badminton and netball teams completed their Round 4 matches on Saturday and our soccer teams completed Round 3 last Tuesday. Each week our girls put on a great display of team work, sportsmanship and skill and we wish them all the best for the remainder of the season.

Netball & Badminton RegradingAt the completion of Round 4 for netball and badminton, the regrading of teams for all competitions will take place. This will ensure that all teams are playing in a division and grade suitable to the team’s ability and allows for competitive matches against other schools. Due to the nature of regrading, parents and students will need to understand that venues and times of games will change and that this is out of our control as to which venue/school hosts each grade. Changing of venues will only be positive for all teams as it will allow all girls to be rewarded with even competition. Regraded programs will be sent during Weeks 6 and 7 via email. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. We wish all teams the best of luck for the up and coming season!

Term 2/3 Secondary Sport

Round 1 Results and Details Our Open netball team played against Charles Campbell College and Parafield High in Week 5. The skilful play and team work of SAC proved too dominant and both games were won by over 30 goals! They will play Sacred Heart College and Cardijn College in Round 2 early next term. A special thank you to old scholar Lucy Burg for coaching the team this year. The Open soccer team played their first round matches during Week 5. The team fought hard to draw against St Peter’s College ,however, Glenunga proved too strong defeating SAC 2-1. This young team, comprised mainly of Year 10 students will be a force in the knockout competitions over the next few years. A special thank you to Mr Alan Brown for coaching the team this year. For the first time SAC entered knockout football at Open level. Our squad of 22 students trained hard for four weeks to prepare for their first ever football matches against OLSH and Sacred Heart. SAC were six goal victors in game one versus OLSH however the experience of Sacred Heart was too strong and the team went down by seven goals. Football has been a great addition to the SAC sports program and we look forward to the development of this team in years to come. A special thank you to Ms Lauren McGrechan for goal umpiring each game and assistant coach Ms Sarah Eaton.

SECONDARY SPORTTHE FATAL FIVE: ROAD SAFETY PRESENTATIONOn Friday 20 May 2016 all Year 11 students were involved in a road safety program titled ‘The Fatal Five’, presented by a currently serving police officer. This powerful and interactive program discussed road safety issues, including the causes of road crashes such as fatigue, alcohol and drugs, speed, risk-taking, peer pressure, driver attitudes and ways in which to reduce the risk of becoming a crash statistic. This program incorporates the use of contemporary government road safety messages through partnership with the Motor Accident Commission (MAC).Listed below are some web sites, recommended by SAPOL, which may be of further value to you and your family:• raa.com.au• mylicence.sa.gov.au• sapolice.sa.gov.au• howsafeisyourcar.com.auFor any further information on road safety please feel free to contact the Road Safety Section on 82076586 or by email: [email protected] Below are some student reflections on the program:The Fatal Five presentation gave us the opportunity to learn about road safety. We were able to reflect upon our decisions and think about how our actions on the road can affect others. The SAPOL presentation really opened my eyes to the dangers on the roads and provided me with a greater understanding of road safety. Talia Hollamby 11NR

A confronting and thought provoking presentation, the Fatal Five presentation demonstrated to all Year 11 students the necessity of driving safely on our roads. The police officer reiterated how important it is to think for yourself and your friends before travelling in a vehicle with others. We were reminded to always have a plan of how to travel safely to and from an event, to remain as safe as possible on our roads. Sara Hillock 11ABThe Fatal Five presentation provided us with a clearer understanding of how to be safe on the road and the severe consequences linked to bad road behaviour. We were shown multiple scenarios and notified of their outcomes so that we were fully aware of the risks of driving recklessly. I found the presentation both informative and engaging and have definitely become more aware of how to drive safely in different situations. Deanna Maio 11SE

SECONDARY SPORT2016 STUDY TOURSThroughout the first few months of 2016, St Aloysius College had the pleasure of hosting three groups of overseas students from Japan.

The first group of students was from St Capitanio Girls High School, from the Nagoya region of Japan. These eleven girls visited Adelaide for six weeks. They arrived at the end of January and their first few weeks were spent at ELSA developing their English skills and learning about Australia. In Week 3, they came to SAC and were enthusiastically hosted by the five Year 7 and 8 classes. Interested Year 7 and 8 students were invited to be buddies to our Japanese guests and after some ‘buddy training’ confidently welcomed the girls into their classes. St Capitanio girls experienced school life in Australia by attending classes over the three weeks. During this time the also had the opportunity to visit two primary classes and their visit culminated with a farewell party in which they dressed their buddies in kimonos! These interactions have been a great experience for all the girls involved and our students have revelled in the opportunity to talk and interact. As well as expert advice on the ancient art of origami, students from SAC have appreciated that they have much in common with girls their own age, from another country. I would like to thank all the Year 7 and 8 students and teachers for the warm and caring manner in which they welcomed our guests into their classroom. I would especially like to thank the following 25 students who enthusiastically took on the responsibility of being a buddy.

• Nikita De Vuono & Neema Justine 7JT• Zoe Stefanopoulos & Prudence Beaumont 7KO• Eleanor Colby & Lucy Carter 7SS• Stephanie Hein, Annilyse Thompson, Ella Kelly & Alysha

Clarke 8NR• Zara Brown, Chris Johnson, Ester-Ruth (Kesie) Loquinario-

Stephens, Megan McCaffrey, Isabelle Milsom 8RG• Charlotte Dirk, Jorgie McKenzie & Alexia DiSario 8KM• Natasha English, Maja Tongerie & Zoe Sotiropoulos 8NW• Ellie Stephenson & Tessa Mauriello 8KF

The second group we hosted was from Mito High School. Mito is an all-girls secondary school located in Mito, a city north east of Tokyo. The thirty-nine girls who made the journey to Australia were very interested in women’s rights and empowering girls to achieve. To assist the Mito girls in the women’s rights workshop our school leaders, the year 7-10 SRCs, were seconded. These young women are to be congratulated on their efforts and contributions to the discussions of women’s leadership, while assisting the Japanese girls with their English and understanding of some complex concepts. The SRCs then hosted their guests within the classrooms for a day so they could experience school life in Australia. A particular highlight for the Mito girls was working with the primary classes. They shared with the younger students traditional Japanese crafts and games.

The third group of Japanese girls to visit were from Mejiro. These twenty-five girls came to SAC for one day and were hosted by the Year 9 and 10 classes. Twenty- three SAC girls volunteered to be buddies and after a school tour and some activities they welcomed their guests into their classrooms.

The 2016 Study Tours have been a wonderful opportunity for both the St Aloysius students and our guests. Strong friendships have been developed and an understanding and appreciation of our countries has been fostered. The success of these experiences is very much due to the warmth and enthusiasm of the buddies, class mates and teachers involved.

SECONDARY SPORT CHANCERY LANE - MONTESSORI PRE-SCHOOL

At Chancery Lane, Montessori Pre-School we have recently learnt that almost everything around us can be recycled or reused, to reduce the amount of landfill waste. So we have started to look at what is the best way of reducing waste from our lunch time – recycling the plastic packaging; and we are already starting to see the amount of rubbish thrown away decreasing! As a Pre-school community the children are very excited to contribute to and be a part of the ‘Wipe Out Waste’ project.

They have learnt to sort out glass, tins, paper/cardboard and plastics into three categories – soft plastics, hard plastics and bottles. Each day they collect what they can recycle from their own lunch boxes. Prior to sorting these recyclables into groups, the children have learnt the importance of rinsing out the containers/packaging to limit pests and prevent mould/mildew.

To complete the process of our recycling project, a small group of children walked with the teachers to our local Coles supermarket, where they have a soft plastics recycling station that allows us to deposit and recycle these soft plastics properly.

Besides recycling, the children have also learnt to reuse some of these materials and create them into fun craft experiences, such as:

• hanging planters for our yard from metal tins

• paper mache pendant making from shredded paper; and

• making an A3 size paper from scrap paper

Over the past two weeks, the children have also learnt the concept of compost, depositing all their food scraps and fruit peels into the compost bins.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS

STORYTIMEHats, hats and more hats could be found in the Catherine McAuley Auditorium at 10.30am on Wednesday 25 May as primary classes participated in the 2016 National Simultaneous Storytime. In schools and public libraries around Australia, more than 500,000 children joined in reading ‘I Got This Hat’ written by Jol and Kate Temple and illustrated by Jon Foye. This event was organised by the Australian Library and Information Association to promote the value of reading and literacy and the role of libraries. While Ms Griffiths read the story aloud, the students of 3EG acted out the events of the story along with a musical accompaniment provided by the technical skills of Ms Joanne Szegedi. Thanks to all students and teachers who participated to make this such an enjoyable event.
