BURKETOWN STATE SCHOOL

ACTION DAY ~ 20th MARCH

At Burketown State School we are always planning and developing a safe and supportive school. Our ac-tion day to activate the 2020 reminder and pledge for stopping bullying at our school was 20th March from 8.30-10.30am. What a fantastic day ~ EMPOWERING! The infographic Bullying Prevention for schools what we know summarises the quality Australian research about effective practices: at Burketown State School we have enriched positive teacher-student relation-ships and positive family relationships. Students have a fundamental right to learn in a safe, support-ive environment and to be treated with respect. Research, both in Australia and overseas, has identi-fied the following combination of broad strategies as most likely to prevent and reduce bullying: A focus on building positive relationships and reduc-

ing bullying in the school community through a range of activities that engage students, families and staff (including professional development for teachers)

effective classroom environments supported by state-ments of rights and responsibilities developed with stu-dent involvement

the promotion of a positive school environment that provides safety, security and support for students and promotes student wellbeing

effective approaches and strategies to encourage posi-tive student behaviour as well as approaches to discipline that are consistent, inclusive, solution-focused and non-punitive

explicit teaching of values and skills to all students (and especially bystanders) including strategies for responding to bullying behaviour and supporting stu-dents who are bullied

integration of social emotional learning within the curriculum

Grand Challenge Social Statistical Literacy Through the four principals of en-trepreneurial pedagogy, students will engage in authentic learning and develop their own entrepre-neurial project. This form of learn-ing will stimulate several entrepre-neurial values (self-confidence, mo-tivation, commitment and team spir-it). Students will measure the popu-larity of their fictitious entrepreneur-ial concept on a social media plat-form and critically evaluate their success using statistical evidence. Eligible students from Burketown SS to complete this section of the Grand Challenge were: Jaida Amini Summer Martin Hunniie Yanner Phillip Booth A very big thank-you to Mrs Ford and Mr Harry for their on-going support -Fantastic!

This term in Science the P-2 class de-cided to be toy makers and design a range of interesting things to play with and decorate the garden. Lacey, Clin-ton, and Braxton made some wonderful wind ornaments to hang in the garden at school and see how the weather would affect them. They found that the wind here in Burketown is too strong and blew their ornaments away. Phillip Yanner, Jonty and Alaiya used their understanding about materials that float to make some brilliant boats. These boats will hopefully carry marbles and not sink. Pamela, Emmy, and Anthony Martin decided to make toys that you need to push or pull to play with. Antho-ny made a brilliant boat with wheels, Emmy made a colourful cart and Pame-la made a space car. It has been a fun and exciting term, all the students have enjoyed taking on these new, exciting challenges.

The 3-6 classroom has been work-ing diligently to complete all as-sessment items for the upcoming reporting period. This week stu-dents will be finishing off English, Maths and Science. Well done 3-6!

P-6 Languages Lessons: The Gangalidda Language Program is back in full swing after a temporary hiatus due to COVID-19 related restrictions. Since the School (in partner-ship with and under the direc-tion of the local traditional own-ers) started teaching it as part of the curriculum, the students have really taken it on and done extremely well in learn-ing, remembering and under-standing the local traditional language.

The students can already in-troduce and identify them-selves in language, they know the language names of various animals and places, and a number of other lan-guage words and actions as well. The widespread support and encouragement from the community has been ex-tremely heartening and the entire School team looks for-ward to continuing this im-portant and vital part of cul-tural revitalisation for many years to come.
