MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL VOL 13.12 16 th August, 2012 Dear Parents and Carers J Rock Recently I had the opportunity to attend J Rock and observe the performance of our boys and girls. This was my first J Rock experience. This event attracts schools across Australia and has spread across the globe. It has the sound message of healthy living and eating as its background philosophy. Our children were impressive with their attitude, manners, commitment and performance. I would like to thank the staff who organised the event and the parents who support the children. Well done every one! Lost Property The school is currently holding a significant amount of lost property. On Monday of next week the lost property currently held by the school will be placed on display in the undercover area, adjacent to the tuckshop. Any unclaimed items will then be donated to a local charity such as Lifeline or the Salvation Army. Many of these items are in good condition but cannot be returned to the children who own them as they are not clearly marked with the name of the child. Please take the time to name your child’s property, especially hats, lunchboxes, drink bottles and jumpers. Contact With Children At School On a rare occasion a parent may need to make contact with their child during school hours. If such a situation arises for your child, please come to the office and ask to see one of the deputy principals or myself. The child will be asked to come to the office. Parents and carers are asked not to go directly to classrooms in school time. Insurance Cover For Students Undertaking Physical Activities Physical activity and physical education, particularly contact sports, carry inherent risks of injury. Parents are advised that the Department of Education, Training and Employment does not have Personal Accident Insurance cover for students. Education Queensland has public liability cover for all approved school activities and provides compensation for students injured at school only when the Department is negligent. If this is not the case, then all costs associated with the injury are the responsibility of the parent or caregiver. It is a personal decision for parents as to the type and level of private insurance they arrange to cover students for any accidental injury that may occur. Top DEPUTY PRINCIPAL NEWS Springfield Lakes State School Gifted Education Pro gram The Gifted Education Team (G.E.T.) offers support for both the recognised gifted, and or, forward learners in our school. The G.E.T develops, coordinates and maintains an EdStudio for ‘The Booralie’ (an Aboriginal word meaning ‘Star’), which caters for each of the boys or girls that teachers have made the team aware of. Teachers complete a ‘Bright V’s Gifted’ Checklist as well as provide information in regards to the child’s strengths and the content that is being taught within the classroom. With this information, an EdStudio is designed which compacts the curriculum within a child’s class, and supports the extended learning of these children so as to cater to their individual needs and interests. We have a number of students across Year 1-7 who are participants in ‘The Booralie’ program. Springfield Lakes State School have talented mathem aticians and scientists ! A huge congratulations to the Year 6 and Year 7 students who participated in the Ipswich and West Moreton District ‘Maths Teams Challenge’ on Tuesday 14th August at Ipswich Girls Grammar. You represented the school with pride and we are very proud of your achievements at this competition. Well done! 20 students from Year 7 were selected by their classroom teachers to attend Springfield Central High School on Wednesday 15th August to participate in Science Week activities. They participated in a variety of activities based around biology, chemistry and physics. The children enjoyed experiencing a range of scientific experiments and activities supported by Springfield Central High School Science teachers. District Athletics I would like to put forward a huge thank you to Mrs Licit for the time and effort she had put into training the students prior to their participation in the District Athletics. It’s through the efforts of teachers like Mrs Licit that we can ensure that as a school we are providing our students with opportunities to enhance and develop their talents. Thank you Mrs Licit for your dedication to our sporting children. Kindest Regards Louise Whittering A/Deputy Principal

FROM THE ADMINISTRATION OFFICE

STUDENT ABSENCE LINE

Parents are requested to call the Student Absence Line on 3437 9860 to advise the school if your child/ren will be absent.

STUDENT PERSONAL DETAILS We are reminding parents to ensure that all contact details are up to date. We have had a number of incidents of late where we have needed to contact parents due to accident or illness and the phone numbers that we have on file are incorrect or have been disconnected. MOBILE PHONES

Bringing mobile phones to school is not encouraged by the school because of the potential for theft and general distraction and/or disruption associated with them. However, we understand that on occasions parents require their children to have a mobile phone. This is to be logged into the office on arrival at school, with the mobile phone register being signed. Children collect their phones and sign them out in the afternoon.

PEANUT AND OTHER NUT ALLERGIES Parents are requested not to provide lunches or snacks containing nut products for children attending Springfield Lakes State School. This is to protect the significant number of students who have anaphylactic allergies to even traces of peanuts and other nuts. Some of these students are so allergic that even a minute amount of peanut butter or Nutella could cause an anaphylactic reaction. Please do not send Nutella, peanut

butter sandwiches or other snack products to school that could put other students at risk. Thank you for helping us keep all of our students safe.

When packing lunches for our children please keep i n mind convenience is not always the best solution. The small cans of spaghetti or fruit with the pull ring lids are a very convenient solution for a meal but have also caused nasty accidents for little fingers. Please be mindful of this and perhaps take the time to open and pour the contents into a small plastic container.

While Mr Doyle likes dogs not all dogs like each other. Please do not bring your dog to school as some dogs bite and some dogs like to fight.

CHAPPY’S CHAT Scripture Union Staff Conference Last week I attended the Scripture Union Queensland staff conference where I was able to meet with 600 Chaplains from across the state. It was highly encouraging to see and hear about the different initiatives that are being run through school chaplaincy services across the state. Whilst I was away I was made aware of the following initiatives in our local area.

I Care... We Care... Ipswich Cares Ipswich Cares is an initiative with Compassion Australia that challenges the City of Ipswich to give to help an overseas need. During September residents of Ipswich are asked to donate a dollar at money spinners located at Orion Springfield Town Centre and Booval Fair. All money raised will be used to support Compassion’s Water for Life program.

The Water for Life program enables Ipswich to become part of the solution to one of the greatest and most urgent needs in developing countries today, access to clean, safe and drinkable water. Your help will see children in remote areas around the world receive a simple cost-effective water purification system that will provide them and their families with clean, safe water for a lifetime. Girls in the Media – Challenging current images Melinda Tankard Reist (www.melindatankardreist.com) is a well-known author, speaker, media commentator, blogger and advocate for women and girls. Over two days in August, Melinda will be speaking at all three state schools in Forest Lake. The six presentations will include an evening for parents (and other interested people, 15 years and over) on Tuesday, 28 th August, 2012 , in the Auditorium at – Grand Avenue State School, corner of Grand Avenue and Centennial Way, Forest Lake. The aim of this event is to help our girls withstand the unrealistic pressures in today’s media, and to see themselves as valuable and acceptable as they are. Taking us on a visual ‘tour’ of almost 200 images from popular culture, Melinda will explore the way these messages shape and mould young women’s ideas of themselves, their bodies, and their relationships. Her presentation will provide strategies to help girls rise above the air-headed cult of celebrity, fashion and outward appearance and discover their true value and worth. The Grand Avenue S.S. P. & C. received funds for this evening presentation from the Councillor for Parkinson Ward and the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund. Thanks to this significant sponsorship, parents can attend free of charge. PLEASE NOTE: bookings are essential and can be made either by emailing to [email protected] or by sms to 0467 449 679. Time is 7.00pm for 7.15pm till 8.30pm, Tuesday, 28th August, 2012.

Free Triple P Group Course We would like to invite you to our free Triple P Group Course, these are more in depth than our

evening seminars and covers a wide range of parenting solutions, it also includes follow up phone

calls to help you in your progress in implementing the principles of the program.

Group Programmes What will I learn in a Group Triple P Course?

You’ll learn about:

-Effective parenting strategies.

-How to promote your child’s development.

-How to manage common child behaviour problems.

-Principles to help you deal with almost any situation that might arise.

How much time will it take and how many people are in a group?

The great thing about doing a Triple P Group Course is that the groups are small (typically 10 – 12

people) and you’ll feel immediately at home with a group of parents who all want the same thing –

to do the best for their kids and have an enjoyable family life! Groups are run by an accredited

Triple P practitioner. These will be run over one day with follow up phone conversations addressing

your individual progress.

Our group programs start in Ipswich on the 18th of August

Parent Comments about the group program

"I am so glad I did this program. I feel a lot more confident as a parent and my son knows what to expect.

Consistency is the key for me. Thank you."

"It has helped me to see that not all the problems were my son’s behaviour, but how I dealt with them. The

biggest changes came in my own behaviour."

"I want to thank you for giving me other ways to deal with problem behaviour instead of yelling and getting

no-where. I am definitely feeling more confident."

"Excellent. Every parent should do this course. Many thanks."

"Gave me a lot more confidence as a parent. Good strategies for managing bad behaviour that work. Good

ideas for parenting e.g. importance of positive actions (praise) and that they really make a big difference. It

would be great if this programme was made more known to parents. It would have been of great benefit to

use before my son reached the terrible 2s. We probably wouldn’t have fallen into some of the traps (e.g.

giving in, smacking, etc.) that we initially did before seeking help. I’m sure we will have better parenting skills

with our daughter than we initially did as first time parents. Great Programme – thanks, you saved us!!"

"Excellent. Has helped my husband and I to work together with the same treatment for kids from both of us."

"The best part was meeting with other people, discussing your problems and finding out about little things you

can do – star charts, praise and spending quality time, and I don’t want to leave the group"
