Classroom News

Year 1: We had a lot of fun creating play mats for our ‘small world’ adventures. First of all we brainstormed what features we would like in ‘Dinosaur Land” and draw our plan. With help from Miss Elise, we draw each person’s ideas onto calico fabric and painted it! We are enjoying using ‘Dinosaur Land” to explore prehistoric times. We used our under-standing of ‘place’ and importance of communities through our HASS units to create a plan of ‘Town Land’ which will be used in “Our Community’ small world play experiences. Year 2 –4: We just had to have a go at making a small world mat so our idea was to create a farm. Luckily for the farm animals, we included a pig sty, a chook pen and a paddock for the cows! Our HASS unit included the exploration of land and the different uses it has. Year 5-6: In Science we investigated evaporation and the factors that can affect how much moisture evaporates over a timed period. Some of the variables were location, length and depth of the containers and the weather! We finished off our Japanese listening and writing assessment tasks and we were able to identify features about a character’s home town and what activities were available. Almost all of our assessment tasks for each year level are complete and our students should be congratulated for their hard work and commitment to their learning. WHAT IS OUR TERM 4 FOCUS? WRITING, WRITING, WRITING Provide a place for your child to write. Stock the “writing centre” with supplies such as paper, pencils and crayons. You can also gather family photos and magazines in the centre that can be used as story starters. Read, read, read! Reading exposes students to general vocabulary, word study and content-specific vocabulary. Through reading, students see a variety of authors’ techniques that they can use in their own writing. Provide authentic writing opportunities for your child. Have your child write his own thank-you notes, party invitations and letters to family. Let your child make the grocery list. Finding a pen pal for your child would make writing “real.” Be a writing role model. Make sure your child sees you as a writer. Point out times that you use writing to communicate with others. When your child writes, you should write. You can schedule a day of the week that you will turn off the television and share your writing. Ask questions. Ask specific questions about your child’s writing such as: “How did that happen?” “How did that make you feel?” “Can you tell me more about that…?” “What are some other words you could use to describe…?”

AWARDS

POSITIVE CULTURE 4 LIFE

Principal’s and Student of the Week Awards

Each week, our Student of the Week Award and Principal’s Awards are presented on Parade. Parade is held every Monday afternoon at 2.45 pm, either in the classroom or the undercover area (depending on the weather conditions) The Student of the Week Award for Week 6 was Saxon for displaying appropriate and respectful behaviours towards others. The Principal’s Award for Week 6 was Jake for sharing audio stories with his friends. Well done Saxon and Jake!

Our final swimming lesson was this week and I would like to thank the students for the wonderful way in which they behaved, listened and learnt while at the Burdekin Swim School. Thank you to Lisa for your tireless efforts, your encouragement and giving our students the opportunity to learn such important life skills. At Kalamia State School, swimming lessons and life saving skills are highly valued and it is wonderful that we can provide essential lessons to all students at no cost to families. Thank you to our parents who help support our school by assisting with transport and helping out in the pool. We couldn't do it without you!

SWIMMING LESSONS—TERM 4

HEALTH & WELL BEING

Play helps children develop social skills

Play is important for learning the social skills (including language and communication) that develop over time and will be the foundation for future relationships.

Through play, children learn about:

the give and take of relationships with friends (negotiating)

how their behaviour can affect others and to develop empathy

how to lead and follow

repairing relationships

Play helps children develop emotional skills

Through play, children can express their feelings, even before they have the words to say how they feel. Play also fosters imagination and becomes the basis for creativity in art or music or other ways of self-expression. These ways of personal expression can help people cope with feelings all their lives.

Play can also help children learn impulse control. They learn to think about what they want to do, to plan and to be patient. If they’re building a castle and get frustrated and knock it down, they have lost their castle. In these ways, children gradually learn they need to control their impulses to achieve what they want.

As children grow, the way they play will change. Examples of play for children of different ages are listed below:

Preschool children (around three to five years) Old milk containers, wooden spoons, sticks, scrunched up paper and old clothes are great

for imaginative play

Playdough and clay can help your child develop find motor skills.

Favourite music or pots and pans are great for a dance concert or to make up music

Simple jigsaw puzzles and matching games like animal dominoes help improve your child’s memory and concentration

Babies (birth to around 18 months) With babies you might try:

music, songs, gentle tapping on your baby’s tummy while you sing, bells or containers filled with different objects – these activities can help develop hearing and movement

objects of different sizes, colours and shapes to encourage a child to reach and grasp

sturdy furniture, balls, toys or boxes to get a child crawling, standing and walking

play with movement (for example, holding a baby while singing, swaying or gently dancing)

play with words, such as in simple rhymes, animal noises, books, blowing raspberries and playing peek-a-boo.

Toddlers (around 18 months to three years) A toddler might enjoy:

big and light things like cardboard boxes, buckets or blow-up balls to encourage them to run, build, push or drag

chalk, rope, music or containers can encourage jumping, kicking, stomping, stepping and running

hills, tunnels or nooks that encourage physical activities like crawling and exploring, experimenting with different sounds and rhythms (try singing, dancing and clapping along to music with your child).
