Key Enrolment junctures:

Please see the attached flier for more information.

Emergency Drills

Emergency drills are conducted at school at least four timesa year. The drills help students and staff be familiar with thealarms and routines and maximise safety. Teachers take thetime to explain the purpose of the drills with students so thatstudents remain calm, relaxed and attentive during themovement and sounds of each practice drill.

Each Term the school will practice one of the emergency drills:Fire/evacuation or Lockdown. The evacuation point is the mainoval. During a lock-down children will remain in their classroomsuntil an all-clear is given. The school office is locked during drills;entry is not permitted until the alarms stop and the all-clear isgiven.

Parents visiting the school must sign in at the front office. Thisallows us to cross-check the presence and safety of eachperson on campus before a drill can be completed. If, onapproaching the school, you hear the alarms, please do notenter the school grounds until the alarms stop and the all-clearis given.

Sports Report

AFL Qld School Cup

Congratulations to all the AFL players who last Wednesdaytravelled to Maroochydore to represent our school against the

best teams from the Sunshine Coast South area. Our girlswere up against Talara Primary College and were absolutelyawesome. From the opening bounce our girls dominated tolead 8-0 at quarter time, and increasing this lead until the finalhooter sounded with Morayfield East State School the victors,22-2. This was a real team effort with a number of players reallyimpressing. Keep up the great work girls. Your next opponentsSt Thomas Moore await at Maroochydore on the 10 August.

Our boys took on the highly acclaimed Stella Marist CatholicCollege and gave a great team effort. Our opposition was fullof club afl players, some with regional team experience but ourboys refused to give up. After trailing 12 – 8 at half-time wefought back in the third quarter to lead 17 – 12 at 3/4 time. However the class of Stella Marist overran us in the end to runout winners 33 – 17. I was really proud of the effort from ourboys, their never give up attitude which nearly got them home, and their sportsmanship.

It was one of those days that makes you proud to beassociated with Morayfield East.

Caboolture District Athletics

Good luck to our athletes as they head off to the DistrictAthletics at Centenary Lakes next Tuesday & Wednesday. Weare missing a few of our stars through other commitments butI am sure their replacements will step up and do a great job forus.

She has worked extremely hard to get where she is, thisincludes 11-14 hours of training each week, Monday to Friday.Even though Josie does this much training she is a dedicatedstudent at Morayfield East State School and her duties of beinga Sports Captain, String Ensemble member and participating inmany team events has not stopped her pursuing her goals.

The Enriched Learning Centre

Student Learning

At Morayfield East State School we work collaboratively withstudents to track their progress in learning. Across the schoolwe know that by displaying student learning goals, tracking theirprogress and celebrating growth in student learning, we cansupport our students to make positive educational gains.

Across the school our teachers are providing regular formativefeedback, tracking student progress and establishing learninggoals for writing. At home you can help support your child’sprogress by helping them practise their punctuation, sentencestructure, vocabulary choices, spelling and handwriting. Everylittle bit helps!

Guidance Officer News

It wasn’t me!

When children don’t tell the truth it can be very worrying forparents. It is easy to become upset about the lie and tooverlook what it means to the child. There are many reasonswhy children may not tell the truth. Almost everyone tells liesfrom time to time for a variety of reasons, from avoiding hurtingsomeone else’s feelings to getting out of an awkward situation. It is important to understand the reasons why a child might liebefore you react.

In this edition we will look at why children lie, and then providesome tips to help you address lying in the next edition.

Why children lie

These ages are only guides – it depends on the child’s own rateof development.

Imaginary friends

Some children at about three or four have an imaginary friend. They talk to and play with this friend when they are upset andsometimes blame the friend when they do something wrong. This is part of normal growing up and usually graduallydisappears as the child grows older. There is no need forconcern unless the child seems really withdrawn and unable to

get on with other children and adults. You can help by seeingthat your child has lots of opportunities for fun and enjoymentwith other children.

Chappy ChatI had my last official day as Morayfield East's chaplain onTuesday 26 July and will start my new job as a RestorativeJustice Case Worker next week. I am sad to leave this beautifulschool community and all the amazing students, staff andfamilies I have met here. I have been overwhelmed by the hugepile of beautiful cards, letters and kind words I have receivedfrom students, teachers and parents. It makes it harder to leavebut I know in my heart it is someone else's turn to be yourChappy.

I hope you welcome them and help them know what you needand would like from your school Chappy as well as help themachieve these goals.

It has been my great pleasure to be this school's Chappy. It isa good school and I think its becoming a great community. Iknow many families here have challenges they are dealing withand applaud the parents and young people who do their bestto pull together and make the best of what they have and seekhelp when they need to as well. I have loved watching andbeing a part of people helping out when it's been needed. Ihope and pray you continue to do just that and care for othersand yourselves in the best ways and continue to build a positiveand resilient Morayfield East community.

I plan to support the school through supporting the chaplaincyservice.

Strawberry Tuesdays are planned to continue so you will stillhave a chaplain three days a week. It's a great fundraiser anda healthy way to support families and chaplaincy all at once. Please help as you can to ensure chaplaincy continues at theschool. Chaplaincy has a long history in this school. I hope youhelp keep it alive and well and contributing positively to theschool community.

If you see me around the area please feel free to say hello! My husband and I are planning to participate once again in thelocal Chaplaincy Fun Run on 28 August. We would love to seeyou there. It helps raise funds for chaplaincy as well as being ahealthy family activity!

My prayers and love for this school will continue. All the verybest! Much love

Gail

Community Notices

Moreton Bay Regional Council is running the free Spring in YourStep program from Monday 10 October to Sunday 4 December2016.

• Children under three years or so do not understandthat thinking is private. They believe that their parentscan read their minds. A two year old in a shop maysay, “Why did you lose me, Mummy?” because shethinks that her mother knows where she is evenwhen she is out of sight. Telling lies has no meaningfor under threes.

• Three to four year olds are learning that other peopledon’t know what they are thinking. Children of thisage enjoy practising their new knowledge and skillsso they test it out by telling “stories” e.g. “The bigbad wolf did it”. It is normal for young children to lie, blame someone else or make up a story.

• Children in the early years of school usually want toplease their parents more then they want to do the“right thing”. Children of this age are not likely to tellthe truth if they think it will make their parents cross. It is better not to ask them whether they didsomething than risk them lying. For example, ratherthan saying “Did you spill the milk?”, you could say, “Isee there’s been an accident with the milk. Let’s geta cloth and I’ll help you clean it up.”

• By eight or nine (when they understand about FatherChristmas not being real) children also have someunderstanding of the difference between truth andfantasy. The child’s sense of right and wrong usuallydevelops by about nine or ten years of age.

• Older children, and especially adolescents, have aneed to keep some parts of their lives private and notshare them with parents. If parents ask too manyquestions, the older child or adolescent may lie toprotect privacy.

This hasbeen something the children have been interested in for a whilenow and every day the designs get more complex and theirplanes fly further.

We have also been putting particular focus on our sustainablepractices. We now have compost bins for the kitchen and thechildren. We have also implemented Sustainability officers tohelp us keep up with all the things we need to do, such aswater the gardens, put the compost bins out. The children areintrigued by the worms and other insects that have made ahome in our outdoor compost bin.

Over the last few weeks, the children have also shown aninterest in knitting, so we have been busy teaching the childrenhow to knit. They are really enjoying it.
