SACRED HEART COLLEGE

From the Principal Dear members of the Sacred Heart College community, By now all families across the College will have received the exciting news from Helen O'Brien, Director Catholic Education South Australia, about the proposed new developments for Catholic Schools in our region. There were three new developments detailed in Helen's correspondence and of particular relevance is:

The development of a new co-educational middle school

through the amalgamation of Sacred Heart College and Marymount College (23 November 2016).

This outcome is the result of a concentrated process involving the regional principals and other school groups such as boards, discussions with the Sacred Heart College Council and the leadership of Marist Schools Australia (MSA), focus group research conducted by a contracted firm, engagement with the local priests and a range of other meetings. It has gradually unfolded to this point over the past two years. Throughout the process Professor Denis Ralph, Chair of the South Australian Commission and Helen O'Brien have engaged key leaders in the process and the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools has endorsed the projects. I wish to express my thanks on behalf of the Sacred Heart community to Denis and Helen, as well as Br Michael Green (Executive Director MSA) and Paul Herrick (Regional Director MSA) for their support throughout the process. In a similar model to that which we adopted when amalgamating the Senior and Middle Schools of Sacred Heart, we very much look forward to the consultations and collaborations which lay ahead with Marymount College - a community with which there are many strong relationships which have developed over many years.

The aim of course is for the best possible outcomes for the students and families of our region in terms of a quality, contemporary, inclusive, accessible and family oriented Catholic Education. This is a unique opportunity to align and further develop the many strengths of Marymount and Sacred Heart Colleges. The 'New Vision' document outlined upcoming community forums. I look forward to these gatherings and further engaging with you around this significant project! Kind regards,

Steve Byrne

MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Head of Middle School Staffing Updates We have now finalised our staffing for 2017. I would like to welcome to the Middle School Margret (Lucy) Pickering who will be teaching in Year 6 next year. Lucy comes to us highly recommended from St Barbara's in Roxby Downs. I am confident she will make a great contribution to the team. This position has become available as Deb Rischin is taking up a new position at the Senior School and Sonja Brownridge will take over as the Marcellin Resource Centre's Teacher/Librarian (Sonja will also be supporting our Learning Enrichment Team). Sam Rossi will also join us in a more official capacity as he has accepted the position vacated by Vincent Williams (leave for 2017) as Year 7 Maths, Science and Physical Education teacher. Again, I am confident that Sam will make a great contribution to the students in his care. Middle School Events Last week the Middle School’s annual ‘Band Sandwich’ was held and again, was a huge success. I would sincerely like to thank all those involved in the planning and organisation of the evening. It is great to be able to celebrate the talents of the boys in a relaxed community centred environment. Middle School Band Sandwich gallery > This week we also will be holding our New Parent Evening and Orientation Day. Both events mark significant beginnings for our boys. For some students and their families it is the beginning of their Sacred Heart journey and naturally, a nervous time. Like all partnerships, effective communication is the key to success and I would encourage you to be active in this area, especially with the key stakeholders in your son's education. Our staff are here to support you and your son during this important and exciting time. Chromebooks The portal for purchasing a chromebook for new students is now open and can be reached at http://portal.lwt.com.au/shc. Please note that the Middle School is not a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) school. All Chromebooks purchased from this website/portal will be delivered and distributed via the school. We are not a BYOD school for many reasons including issues relating to warranties, repairs, our networking configuration, equality, and so on. If you need to purchase a new device at any time, please do so via the portal by clicking on the yellow ‘Middle School’ button. All chromebook orders need to be placed and paid for by Friday 16 December 2016. Tim Mullin Head of Middle School

Orientation Day 2016 – Tomorrow (25 November)

This Friday, 25 November, is Orientation Day. Students from other schools who will be attending the Middle School in 2017 will be welcomed into our school and spend the day with us. At the same time our Year 9 students will spend the morning at Sacred Heart Senior to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings, new routines and expectations, as well as getting to know the Marymount College students who joined them for the day. At the Middle School our boys will move up a year level and will be involved in various activities and assemblies run by the leaders and teachers of their respective year level. Current Year 8 students Our current Year 8 students will become the school leaders for a day. Students will be given an overview of Year 9 from the Year Level Leaders and an introduction to the Rite Journey program that Year 9 students will be undertaking next year. Following a video presentation, ‘What You Need to know to be a successful in Year 9,’ Middle School Old Scholars will be returning to the Middle School and sharing their experiences of Year 9. This will be followed by sample lessons by the Year 9 teachers and an Amazing Race orienteering challenge. Current Year 7 students The current Year 7 students will spent the morning with a Year Level Assembly. A quiz and various games will keep the boys involved throughout the day. Wilderness Escape will be presenting information on next year’s camp, which is taking place early in the term. This includes a demonstration on how to pitch a tent and cook using a trangia stove. A special welcome is extended to a number of students from other schools that will beginning in Year 8 next year. Current Year 6 students Our current Year 6 students will begin the morning in the Year 7 classrooms taking part in “get to know you” games, including creating a Student Passport and Names Tags. After recess the year level will take part in sport and novelty activities, followed by a quiz after lunch. New Year 5 students The new Year 5 students from our source schools will meet and be greeted near the front office area by student leaders and escorted to the Year 6 area. The Principal, Steve Byrne will invite Parents/Caregivers to the Kavanagh room for some morning tea. The students will then spend the day making themselves familiar with the school, teachers and other students through various games and get to know you activities. They will be treated to a sausage sizzle lunch. In the afternoon they will be greeted by Head of Middle School, Tim Mullin and will be provided with information on Curriculum Extension Activities (CEA). The day will conclude with a prayer reflection. We hope that this day will be an enjoyable experience and that it will give students a sense of what to expect in 2017. Year 8 Camp in 2017 Tomorrow during Orientation Day (25 November), next years’ Year 8 students will receive a letter to take home about the Year 8 Outdoor Adventure Camp. This camp is being held at Hindmarsh Island in Week 2 of Term 1, 2017. The camp letter can also be accessed through the College website at http://www.shc.sa.edu.au/middle/year-8-excursions. Parents will be provided with login details on how to register their child for the camp. As well as being provided with information about the camp, itinerary, consent and medical information needs to be completed online. Year 8 Camp registration is through the following link: https://wildernessescape.com.au/events/sacred-heart- college-middle- school-year- 8-2/ Online registration is required before 7 December 2016. This camp will provide an excellent opportunity for students to take part in various adventure activities and enable students to get to know other students and teachers in their year level. The camp will also provide an opportunity for teachers to get to know your child in a setting away from school. As such, this camp is an essential part of the Year 8 program and all students are required to attend. Hard copies of the camp booklet will be provided in the new school year. If you are unable to register online you can do so by collecting a hard copy of the consent and medical information form. Joe Millemaci Director of Students

Farewell After a long, diverse and rewarding career in Catholic Education, the time has come to close this very big chapter in my life at the conclusion of this year. The time has passed very quickly. I have valued these last six years at Sacred Heart Middle School and the change, diversity, evolving community and the schools commitment to adolescent boys and their development. My own life has evolved and changed over this time too and for this I am grateful.

I wish all members of SHC community the peace that is Christmas and share with you one of my favourite reflections on Mary at this time of the year. ‘Because she put her trust in God, Mary said yes to the angel who was spinning her world around. In doing that, she teaches us to let go of our need to control and cling, just to let ourselves go in the utter freedom and joy into the arms of God.’ - Michael O’Neill McGrath, brother of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. Jennifer Callanan Assistant Principal Religious Identity and Mission

Middle School Remembrance Day Service The community at Sacred Heart Middle School paused in solemn ceremony to remember the sacrifice of our many service women and men. We stood together in solidarity remembering those who died, have been injured or suffered in all wars. Whilst we honoured the spirit of the ANZACs, loyalty, mateship, courage, perseverance, and more, it was evident that these same values are what we encourage all of our boys here as they develop throughout their lives. Our catafalque party was made up of our very own students, Cooper Jamieson (Year 7), Seby Masih (Year 8) and Taig Hilferty (Year 8). We thank Brock Sheen, an SHC Old Scholar, for instructing these young men in their task. SHC Business Manager - Operations, Peter McCabe, together with Year 9 Leader, Nigel Chakabva, placed a scroll at the base of the flag pole containing the names of Sacred Heart Old Scholars who volunteered to fight in World War 1. While we remember the destruction of war we also remember that each individual, in their everyday actions, either builds up or breaks down peace in our world. May we be people who are conscious of the decisions we make throughout our day, in our conversations and with others. Jennifer Callanan Assistant Principal Religious Identity and Mission

Celebrating National PE Week Sacred Heart Middle School took part in National Physical Education Week last week 14- 18 November (Week 5). This week was created to ‘promote the importance of Health and PE in the Australian Curriculum, and highlight the importance of Health and PE to the learning and development of children and young people’ (ACHPER).

As part of this week, a different activity was organised each morning and was open to all students. These activities included: t-ball, gridiron, croquet, netball, skipping, cricket and golf. It was great to not only see such a large turn out to each activity, but also great to see students from different year levels and different abilities get involved and positively interact with each other.

As well as these mentioned activities, individual year levels organised their own activities. These included a morning of activities for the Year 6 students and a gridiron tournament for the Year 7s as part of their ‘Salad Bowl’ competition.

A big thank you must go out to all of the boys who participated in the activities during the week and also to the teachers who gave up their time to run these activities. It certainly was a successful week and fun was had by all!

SACE End of Year Results SACE end of year results will be available for viewing online through Students Online from 8.30am on Tuesday 20 December. Year 12 students will be able to view SACE Results and their SATAC Tertiary Entrance Statement (i.e. ATAR if eligible). Year 11 students will be able to see their SACE Results to date (including scaled scores for any Stage 2 subjects (including Religion Studies if applicable). Year 10 students will be able to see their PLP result and any other Stage 1 results if applicable (e.g. Languages). Stage 2 students should also receive their official documentation (including SACE Certificate and Record of Achievement) by post that same day. Students should check their address is correct by logging onto Students Online to ensure documentation is posted to the correct address. Please email Deborah Hearl ([email protected]) by 2 December at the latest with the correct address if it is wrong. Students need their SACE registration number and PIN to log on. The PIN is the first 4 digits of the student's birthday (e.g. 3rd January would have PIN 0301). The PIN will be changed after the first log in (and may have already changed if logged in previously). The PIN can be reset from this page if necessary. Students should log in well before results release day to confirm that their log in details and their personal details are correct. It may also be helpful for students to take some time to familiarise themselves with the pages they will view on results release day. A flyer, explaining how students can access their SACE results and reset their PIN if they have forgotten it, was emailed to all students previously. Students having trouble logging in on results release day can contact the Support Team on 8372 7412 or email [email protected]. For more information about SACE results, visit the My results section on the SACE website.

Update to departure times of Bus Route 670 We have been advised by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) that Bus Route 670 will depart 5 minutes later from the commencement of 2017. This is in light of feedback that students often reached the relevant bus stop (either from Marymount, Brighton HS or Sacred Heart College) after this Bus had departed. All other details regarding Bus Route 670 remain unchanged. Daniel Lynch Head of Senior School

Helping families in need this Christmas Sacred Heart Senior continued its annual Christmas Hamper Appeal for those in need. Each homeroom has been busy collecting donations of food items and/or money, which were collected this week by five parishes (Glenelg, Seacombe Gardens, Brighton, St Mary's and Morphett Vale) and will be donated to families in need. Thank you to all students, staff and families for your donations, which will ease the burden for families this Christmas. Carol House Teacher Librarian

Ingenuity 2016 On Friday 28 October, Sacred Heart College students from the Year 10 Specialist Mathematics classes attended Ingenuity 2016. This is an annual event presented by University of Adelaide and is a showcase of projects by students from their Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences. The students had the opportunity to hear what is involved in these courses and their relevance and impact on our world. The students also heard from current university students and their stories of how they ended up in these courses. For some it was a case of following their passion for mathematics. Following a presentation, Sacred Heart students were able to take a tour of the projects on display and also engage with current university students to share in their experiences and learn more about what is involved in studying these courses. It also exposed students to a variety of possible career opportunities available through the study of these courses. It was also great to see that in quite a few cases, the university students were old scholars of Sacred Heart College including Ashlee Ferencz, James Galpin, Stella Manuel, Ben Steer and Daniel Connely (pictured). It was definitely a worthwhile experience for the students and perhaps motivation to continue in their studies of Mathematics and Science through to Year 12. James Grant Mathematics Coordinator
