We have had a great start of the year
even with Harvey causing a little disruption. As we move through the
year, we all get wrapped up in our own world especially when we approach
family oriented holiday's. This is a great time to stop
for a second, slow down and take advantage of this time to show appreciation for all those that have had a positive impact on you and your child. I encourage
you to take a time out and show your appreciate for our staff by sending a Teacher Achieving Excellence
(TAE, see link below). It is something that makes you feel good, your child feel good, and the staff feel good about all that is going on at College Park. Build
excitement and enthusiasm at a time of year that sometime we forget to do so. I appreciate all of your
hard work and dedication to our school, staff and students. We have the best parents and teachers working together to provide an incredible experience
for kids. Go CP!!!!

We are excited to kick off the 2017-2018
HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership) pro-gram this year. All sophomores are invited to
apply for HOBY’s program. The program is looking for a student with leadership potential. Once all applications are turned in, one sophomore will be chosen by a panel of judges based on
their essay. The chosen student will be invited to attend a 3-4 day leadership conference held at the University of Houston in June. Transportation to and from the conference must be ar-
ranged by the student. To enter the competition, students will complete the following essay topic. The essay should be turned
in to the counseling office at College Park by November 17. The
winner will be announced by December 1.
ESSAY TOPIC:
Describe the most rewarding and most challenging aspects
of being a leader in your school and community.
What’s in store for the outstanding high school sophomore se-
lected to attend the HOBY State Leadership Seminar?
*3-4 days of fun, interactive leadership training, meet-
ing state leaders, and making new friends
*He or she will return from the seminar with skills and inspiration to lead change and become effective, ethical leaders
in their home, school, and community

Students with College Park High School’s Texas Association of Future Educators club competed in
individual and team events at the Regional Competition on Saturday, November 4, 2017. Students had been
preparing for the competition for months and they were rewarded for their efforts and hard work.
The College Park team not only competed, they hosted the event. CP students arrived early on Saturday and
helped set up, greet schools and welcome the judges. CP students then oversaw the conference by leading
the pledges, sharing the agenda and schedule for the day and wishing all schools in the region good luck. Our
students also helped throughout the day answering questions, helping students find their rooms for competi-
tion, assisting in lunches, presenting a break-out session after lunch and presenting the awards before help-
ing in the clean-up following the conference.
As the awards were announced by the Region President and College Park Advisor, Connie Thornell, the stu-
dents from CP were awaiting anxiously while still being gracious hosts and hostesses. In the state contests,
anyone who scored a 90 or above won a Blue Ribbon of Achievement and advances to state. However, in the
national competitions, only the top 1-2 students would move on to the state competition in February from all
the competitors in those national qualifying events. Nerves were abounding as CP students waited for the
results in their category.
After all of the competitions were over, 36 students from College Park TAFE advanced to state from the total
74 competitors advancing from the regional conference. The presentations and projects presented by CP
were outstanding. Even those competitors who do not have the opportunity to advance, did a great job. The
state competition will be held February 15-16, 2018 in Montgomery, Texas and awards will be on February 17,
2018 in Huntsville, Texas at SHSU.
A listing of the students that qualified for state from CP TAFE is listed below. We wish them the best of luck!
Aaron Randle, Abbie Johnson, Abby Acompanado, Alexa Frank, Anna McGee, Ashton Waguespack, Chloe
Weemes, Courtney Beardsley, Danni Edwards, Darielys Figueroa, Denisse Cabrera, Drew Imai, Emily Thomp-
son, Grace Cantrell, Hannah Neal, Jennifer Fernandez, Kallianne Haacke, Kelli Evans, Kemarie Hatt, Keren
