From the Classrooms

Prep

Ahoy, me hearties! This term in Prep, we have been immersedin learning all about Pirates for English and learning about theweather for Science. The Playful Penguins have enjoyed doinglots of pirate related craft, singing pirate songs, role-playingpirate games and reading and retelling pirate stories. Thechildren have been using pirate related vocabulary such as'cutlass, Jolly Roger, skull and cross bones, crows nest, treasure chest etc. in their independent writing. They have beenusing the SSP posters and SSP sound clouds to help themto code maps and spell pirate words. We are really lookingforward to our excursion to the Pirate Park at Currumbin and toour Pirate Day when we come to school dressed as pirates andwe get to see Captain Jellybean's Pirate show.

In Science, we have been singing the weather song each dayand keeping a weather journal to record the daily weather andtemperature. We have also made rainbows and investigatedclouds.

Year 1

1BR

This term in Year 1, the Brainy Rockets have been sharingspecial events as part of our History Unit. The students wereasked to bring in one significant item that reminded them of

an event or important milestone in their lives. These are thememories we have shared so far.

Year 2

2KK - Flower Fraction Artwork

As part of our Maths focus on partitioning into equal groups, the Knowledgeable Koalas have enjoyed some fun hands-onartwork in the classroom, making Flower Fractions. The flowersin the artwork are made from paper circles that are partitionedequally into halves, quarters and eights and arranged to looklike flowers on the end of a stem. The students have then addedtheir individual style to each picture by drawing a colourful potand background decoration. Our classroom is now brightenedwith beautiful Flower Fractions that not only look nice, but alsohelp us learn about partitioning into halves, quarters and eights.

Year 5

5OS and 5DS

This term, in English, 5OS and 5DS are studying ‘FANTASY’Genre. We are reading the novel, entitled ‘FORESTS OFSILENCE’, the first book in the ‘DELTORA QUEST’ Series, written by well know children’s author, EMILY RODDA. We arelistening to an audio version of the book and also reading ourown copies as well.

We are focusing on the Protagonist (main character), JARRED,as we will be writing a character analysis on him later in theterm, as our major assessment item in English. We are lookingat his character traits, which involves the study of ‘TIER 2VOCABULARY (a higher level of adjectives and verbs), certainliterary devices, such as similes and metaphors and choosingappropriate quotes from the story as supporting evidence in ourwriting.

We are looking forward to see what is going to happen to thepoor citizens of Deltora, as they face the evil Shadow Lord, andsee how Jarred and King Endon can hopefully save their city.

The class also viewed ‘Rabbit-Proof Fence’, a movie set inWestern Australia in 1931. Three aboriginal girls were snatchedfrom their mother and housed in a government camp to be‘re-educated’ as domestic staff. Molly, the eldest, conducts anescape and heads home along the fence.

Administration of Student Medication

Administering Medication at School

If your child requires staff to administer medication to your childat school, please contact the school office in the first instanceto discuss your child’s requirements.

Please note, school staff will only administer medication that:

Office staff will ask you to complete and sign Section 1 of theAdministration of medication at school record sheet.

N.B. If your child requires more than one medication, you willneed to complete a form for each medication.

Providing Medication to the School

Before you provide the school with your child’s medication, check the expiry date to ensure it is in-date and there is enoughfor the agreed time period. It is also a good idea to take a noteof the expiry date so that you can replace the medication beforeit expires.

Please note, school staff will not administer medication thatyou can buy over-the-counter at chemists and supermarkets(e.g. paracetamol, eye drops, cough syrup) unless it has beenprescribed by your child’s qualified health practitioner. Forexample, the school would administer paracetamol to a studentonly if it has been prescribed by their dentist to be taken for ashort time after dental treatment.

School staff are bound by these regulations and we hope thatall parents will acknowledge and cooperate with these rules.

It is safer for all students if you can provide medication tothe school in person (rather than send medication with thestudent). If you can’t provide the medication in person, contactthe school to determine the easiest and safest approach for theschool to receive the medication.

If you believe your child is capable of self-administering theirown medication at school, please contact the office.

When your child’s medication is no longer required to be keptat school, please collect all unused medication.
