From the Principal Welcome Back I would like to welcome everybody back to school for Term 3. I hope you had a happy and restful holiday and are now reinvigorated for what will be a very busy Term 3. This is especially so for our Year 12 students as they move into their final term as students of the school with the Trial Higher School Certificate and then HSC major works, performances and reports all due shortly after. We wish them well and offer our continued support.

In addition, our Year 11 students will complete their Preliminary course requirements at the end of this term before moving on to HSC courses at the beginning of next term. Year 10 move into their final semester of Stage 5 courses and will be working towards finalising subject selections for their Stage 6 programs along with their Independent Learning Projects prior to the showcase of these during Term 4. Students in the junior school will continue working through projects such as High Resolves, cross curricular projects, and for selected Year 7 students, the ‘PRAXIS’ project

As you can see, Term 3 is busy and of course, all of these are in addition to the standard curriculum and curriculum enrichment activities such as band, dance, debating, vocal ensemble, sport etc that so many are involved in to make a school such a rich and valued learning environment.

Debating Our Year 12 debating team had no time to settle back into the routine of school after their holidays, having to contest the state semi‐final of the Premier’s Debating Challenge on Tuesday against Elderslie High School. In a tightly contested debate where teams argued the viewpoints relating to whether a media ban should be placed on terror related incidents for a period of 24 hours after the completion of the event, our team of Madeleine Bosler, Taylor Rowe, Elesi Kougioumtzis and Masi

Sadat Shafai were declared winners after a harrowing adjudication review. This team now move into the state final of this competition to be held in the Great Hall of Sydney University on Friday 5 August.

College Development Day On our first day back this term, our staff attended the College Development Day along with the staff from each of the four other campuses which comprise Northern Beaches Secondary College. The focus of staff learning for the day was based around contemporary learning skills which aligned perfectly with the new reporting competencies that we introduced this year for academic reports across the school. Staff attended sessions by leading academics and practitioners from across the nation regarding these competencies and tools which can be used to both implement and assess these skills.

Development Day

Parent Teacher Night Thank you to all of those parents and students who attended our Years 9 and 10 Parent Teacher interviews on Thursday evening. This is yet another wonderful opportunity for staff, students and parents to share in the learning experiences being undertaking in class by our students. In speaking with many parents during the evening, it was wonderful to hear how students are not only working to their personal best but are, in the main, happy in doing so.

This is a marvellous school and it is because we as a staff have the opportunity to work with such amazingly dedicated and enthusiastic students and supportive, interested parents who all contribute in such a positive way to the learning journey of our students.

I am certainly indebted to all in our community for such support.

Squash Congratulations to Anna and Sam Goodwin who represented Sydney North in Squash at the NSW CHS Championships during the last week of Term 2 in Coffs Harbour. Both students played in the teams and individual competitions. The Sydney North Girls Team placed 4th while the Boys team finished 8th. In the Individual section, which was knockout format, Anna won through to the quarter‐finals while Sam was eliminated in Round 2 of what was a very strong Boys’ competition.

I am pleased to announce that Anna was selected as one of five students from across the state into the NSW CHS Team to tour New Zealand from the 20th ‐27th August. During this time, Anna will play against both the Zealand All School's and Queensland All School's teams.

From the Deputy Principals All Year 12 students are in the process of revising and studying for the Trial HSC Examinations in Weeks 3 and 4. The individual timetables issued at the end of last term will provide a good timeframe to inform your revision and study timetables. Please remember to speak to your mentor teacher and class teachers who are there to support and encourage you to achieve your personal best. Best wishes also to the Year 12 Music and Music Extension students who will be examined on their HSC Trial Practical performances next Monday and Tuesday in the hall. Last but not least, congratulations to our Year 12 debaters for winning the semi‐final against Elderslie High School. Best wishes in your preparation for the State Final on Friday 5 August.

Year 10 students will be provided with information about the Year 10 into 11 Interviews to be held in Week 4 this term at the Year Meeting next Tuesday. All students will be given an Application for Enrolment Year 11 – 2017 form and an individual reflection sheet. Both of these need to be completed and will be used to inform discussions at the Week 4 interview. Further details about booking an interview will be emailed to parents next Friday and also provided in the next issue of the Weekly Pines.

Year 8 parents and students are reminded of the Year 8 into 9 Subject Selection information Evening on Wednesday 17 August in the Hall starting at 6:30pm. Year 9 2017 subject selection booklets will be distributed on the night and teachers will be available to provide further information about the subjects offered.

Thank you to all the Year 9 parents and students who attended the Parent Teacher night on Thursday night. This event provided an opportunity to give valuable feedback to the students and parents. If you were not able to attend and would like to discuss your child’s progress please contact the school.

There are a limited number of places available in Year 7 Praxis Project. The Praxis Project is an immersive one‐week project designed to extend and enrich the learning experiences of gifted and talented learners. During the project students will explore a concept, identify problems related to it in our local area, consider solutions to these problems, and share these solutions to an

audience of teachers, peers, parents and industry experts at the conclusion. The week 3 project is focused on the disciplines of Science and Mathematics.

Term 3 is the shortest term of the year for our Preliminary students. Year 11 students will be busy completing final assessment tasks before they head into the Yearly exams in Weeks 9 and 10, thereby condensing this term into only 8 school weeks. At their Year assembly next week Year 11 students will be receiving information about the Year 11 into Year 12 interviews. During Weeks 5 and 6 each student will be required to have a one on one interview with myself, Kate Munro or Deb Rixon to discuss subjects for Year 12, strategies for dealing with the pressure of the HSC and indicating who they will prefer as their Year 12 teacher mentor. Year 11 students will find this a most valuable experience as they move closer into their HSC year.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Grace Hawkins (Year 11) who was omitted from the original list of students to receive a Principal’s Award.

YEAR 10 INTO YEAR 11 INTERVIEWS

Parents of Year 10 students are advised that there will be an interview process during Week 4 Term 3 for students who will enrol in Year 11 2017. Each interview will take 15 minutes and parents/carers are strongly encouraged to attend with their Year 10 student.

To assist with this process each Year 10 student will receive an interview sheet during Week 2 which must be completed prior to the interview. At the interview, students will have an opportunity to discuss their subject choices, make any changes as necessary and link their Stage 6 subject choices to their post‐school aspirations/wishes.

A booking code will be distributed to parent email addresses on 29 July. Students will receive a copy of the interview sheet for reference and discussion at home prior to completing it to bring to interview in Week 4.

Youth Parliament Flynn Barnard (Year 11) presents a short summary of his participation in Youth Parliament over the holidays.

During the holidays, I was fortunate enough to be involved in the YMCA NSW Youth Parliament program, an apolitical program aimed at supporting youth advocacy and giving young people a chance to get their voice heard in the oldest parliament house in Australia, New South Wales State Parliament.

Alongside 170 participants from all over NSW, I debated bills from Mental Health to Domestic Violence to Euthanasia and many more. As well as representing the electorate as Youth Member for Manly, I was also elected as Minister for Health and Treasurer at the training camp earlier in the year. This involved passing my own bill regarding pill testing and presenting a treasury report on behalf of all the other Youth Ministers in parliament, for which the premier, Mike Baird was present for.

Canteen News Welcome to Term 3 to all our canteen volunteers!

The Committee would like to welcome our new Volunteer Roster Coordinator Amanda Naylor and thank her for taking on this role.

The Term 3 volunteer roster is attached to this Weekly Pines. The volunteer contact list has been emailed to volunteers and we ask that if you are not able to work on a particular shift please try to arrange a replacement/swap with another volunteer on the list. We will also continue to notify our volunteers of their upcoming shifts by text message, so please make sure we have your up‐to‐date contact details. If you do not receive a reminder text please do still attend for your shift.

We would love some more volunteers, especially on Tuesdays and Fridays. From the Archives Every week we will bring you an item from a past issue of the yearly Pines Magazine. 1989 was a year of many ‘firsts’ for the school as well as being the last year as a comprehensive high school. The weather also featured in 1989 sports reports; the cross country was rained out many times, and the athletic carnival on three occasions.

One of the ‘firsts’ was participation in the Rock Eisteddfod. Here’s the report:

This year Manly High was introduced to a new physical fitness activity. The rock eisteddfod is a school production which involves dancing and drama. Mr Shea has introduced this activity and had assistance from Mrs Turik, Mrs Billings and Mr Hall.

Ninety students from Years 7 to 12 participated in the production. They gave up their own time to rehearse over six months to perfect their acts and routines. A lot of organisation and preparation was put into the rock eisteddfod. Fund raising was done to provide sweat shirts, costuming and prop material.

Finally, on July 11th, Manly High set off to Sutherland Entertainment Centre. Our theme was ‘beach pollution’ and we were to compete against six other metropolitan schools. Each school was allocated a dressing room and an on‐stage rehearsal time of thirty minutes. We were to perform second last. The dance routines worked out well. It was a shame though that the lighting effects persons missed out on some crucial parts.

The judges’ comments were all positive and complimentary and our school was judged as the best new school and most sociable.

After a few days waiting it was announced over Triple M who the ‘wild card’ finalists would be. Unfortunately Manly High wasn’t selected to go to the 1989 rock Eisteddfod finals.

Not to worry, Manly High, maybe next year.

MESSAGES FOR MARISA The curtain has come down on our wonderful musical director’s final musical production for Manly. At her moving, tearful farewell on the final night, Ben (Mills) presented her with a gift of a book of memories on behalf of the school community.

Here’s the thing: so far it is waiting for YOUR input. We want to fill it it with YOUR memories of the shows. If you have photos to share, all the better.

It’s a big album – but we doubt it will be big enough. If you have access via social media to contact past students and parents who have been involved in the many shows she has directed, please do pass on our invitation for reminiscences.

City to Surf Fundraiser, Sunday 14 August Every year the Bands of MSC are invited to volunteer at the annual City to Surf fun run at Bondi Beach’s finish line to raise funds for our band programs. Our job is fun, simple, and extremely important. MSC is highly regarded by the organisers for our excellent customer service. This is a highlight of our school’s fundraising events. CALL OUT TO MSC STUDENTS and FAMILIES!

Every year the Bands of MSC are invited to volunteer at the annual City to Surf fun run at Bondi Beach’s finish line to raise funds for our band programmes. Our job is fun, simple, and extremely important. MSC is highly regarded by the organisers for our excellent customer service. This is a highlight of our school’s fundraising events.

What we have to do

Take bags belonging to the runners from trucks and place them in numerical order so that when the runners arrive at the finish line we can give the bags back to them.

What we get LOTS OF FUN, beach morning and community spirit!

We get paid for every person who attends: family, friends, this is open to everyone, not just MSC students, although we want to see as many of you there!

In 2015 we raised almost $4000. More people = > $$

Years 9-12 Duke of Ed 4 hours can go towards your volunteering quota

Year 10 students 6 hours can go towards your 20 hour volunteering quota

Location: Near finish line at Bondi Beach

Arrival time: 6:30am Estimated finish time: 12:00pm (due to road closures)

Parking: Limited car parking is available, so car pooling is a must! If you can bring a car full of people we can probably get you a parking permit at a nearby car park. There are shuttle buses to take us from the car park to the beach.
