Dear Parents/Carers

Whether it’s NAPLAN, a Year 12 exam or any other topical or critical

assessment item, we’re all pretty keen to know we’re we sit in the

grand scheme of things. This is simply human nature.

However, I’d like to think that as we get older and observe the world

and others around us, we’re able to recognise being top of the

charts, first past the post or at on the highest step on the podium is not

what it’s all (or at least, always) about. It goes without saying that we

celebrate achievement, as this often enables us to strive further,

reach our goals and help to model excellence to others.

If we happen to come second, last or middle of the pack, though,

and have invested our hearts, minds and every ounce of energy into

the task at hand, it means the number, our place on the graph or our

place in the pack is not nearly as important.

As we reach the end of Term 3 and round the bend for home in 2018,

I really do encourage you to focus on the effort and attitude of your

children as you reflect on the year so far. January is a long way

behind us on the road we’ve travelled thus far, and I encourage you

to celebrate the milestones that are most relevant for your kids, so

they’re able to launch into our last term with enthusiasm, hope and

purpose.

Have a delightful spring break with your family and I look forward to

seeing you on Monday October 15.

From the Head of Junior School From the Head of Middle &

Senior School

During the last few weeks of this term, our Year 6

students have begun work in earnest on their PYP

Exhibition.

What exactly is a PYP Exhibition you may ask?

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition

occurs in a student's final year of involvement with the

Primary Years Programme. It is an important

transition point between Junior and Middle school,

preparing the students for entry into the Middle Years

Programme (MYP).

This year's Exhibition unit takes place under the

transdisciplinary theme of 'Where we are in time and

place.' All students are required to engage in a

collaborative, transdisciplinary inquiry process that

involves them in identifying, investigating and offering

solutions to real-life issues or problems.

The PYP exhibition has a number of key purposes:

for students to engage in an in-depth,

collaborative inquiry to provide students with an opportunity to

demonstrate independence and responsibility for

their own learning to provide students with an opportunity to

explore multiple perspectives for students to synthesize and apply their

learning of previous years and to reflect upon their

journey through the PYP to provide an authentic process for assessing

student understanding about a real-life issue or

problem to demonstrate how students can take action as a

result of their learning to unite the students, teachers, parents and other

members of the school community in a

collaborative experience

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better

world by 2030. These goals are called the GLOBAL

GOALS and have the power to end poverty, fight

inequality and stop climate change. This year, our Year

6's have chosen one of these global goals to find out

more about and this will frame their

Exhibition. By making people aware of the issues, Year

6's hope to actively engage the Encounter community

to work together to build a better future for everyone.

Blessings TORI WEISS

As Term 3 draws to a close, students in Years 7-11

will bring home their academic progress reports.

These reports highlight areas of strength and

growth for students, and form an important

component of the ongoing conversation and

connection between the College and home. I

urge to you speak with your child about their

highlights so far this Semester, and perhaps set

some goals for Term 4. Parent/teacher interviews

will be held in the NEST on 18th October, with

booking instructions outlined in the letter

accompanying the reports.

This term we have seen our Year 9 students

undertake the MYP Community Project. Our

young people have engaged brilliantly, and

whilst engaging in their learning, they have raised

awareness, generated discussion and most

importantly, taken action to make positive

change in the world. We are very proud of their

efforts and we are grateful for the community

support that they have received. We are very

blessed to be part of such a wonderful and giving

community.

I trust that you enjoy the break from the routines

of school, and look forward to seeing you all

back for Term 4.

Blessings for a fabulous fortnight!

SAPSASA 4/5 Basketball

Our Year 4/5 Boys and Girls Basketball Teams had

a successful day at the SAPSASA Basketball

Competition at Morphett Vale on Wednesday

12th September.

Both the Encounter 4/5 Boys and Girls Div 1 teams

won the final with our Div 2 Year 4/5 Boys finishing

runners up.

Thanks to our coaches Sam Baxter, Keeley Round

and Mr G and their entire support crew.

If at First You Don’t Succeed…

We consider blessed those who have persevered.

James 5:11

Whether we ultimately fail or succeed sometimes

depends on our own tenacity. We’ve all heard stories

about people who beat the odds and achieved

where others tried and failed. But we seldom stop to

think about the many times those same people fell

flat on their faces before realizing their goals.

Thomas Edison, for instance, reportedly built and

tested more than one thousand lightbulbs before

finally getting one to work. Michael Jordan was cut

from his high school varsity basketball team. Louis

L’Amour received several hundred rejection slips

before his first short story was published. After Elvis

Presley’s first performance at the Grand Ole Opry,

the manager advised the young singer to go back to

truck driving.

Satan wants us to give up after a defeat. That’s why

the author of Hebrews urged Jewish Christians to

“throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so

easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the

race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1). That’s a

valuable lesson for your children…and a good one

for mum and dad to remember, too.

Something to think about...

What have you accomplished that required great

perseverance? How can you encourage persistence

in your children? Do you believe that success can

follow repeated failure?

Lord Jesus, it’s difficult for us sometimes to get

beyond our defeats and failures. Help us to get back

on the right path and to keep putting one foot in

front of another. We’re so thankful that even when

this business of parenting seems over our heads, You

still walk right beside us. Amen.
