) Should the Labour Party win the November 24th State Election, then our College will receive $4.5 million to re-build/refurbish 3 ‘blocks’ at the College. Areas that will receive funding will be our current Year 3 classroom, Multi-Purpose room, Library, Art room and Technology room. There is obviously a lot of water to go under the bridge yet, but this is quite an exciting time for the College. I look forward to being able to report on this further at a later date! Cancer Awareness Week Fundraiser - East Loddon Greatest Shave Next Friday! I have been trying whatever I can to grow my hair as much as possible over the past couple of months, all so that I can shave it back off again next Friday for what is a really good cause! Cancer awareness week will be held next week, concluding on Friday with the shaving of not only my hair, but also that of Mr Wilkinson, Mr Young, Mr Clayton and Mr Aurisch (if the clippers can get through that much hair, beard included!). Frau MacNamara and Miss Byrne will also be colouring their hair and Mrs Cail and Mrs Cutting will wear funky wigs throughout the week. Cancer is something that is unfortunately close to many of us and it is tremendous to see 3 Year 10 students taking charge of a great cause like this. If you would like to donate to Sophie, Ella and Jasmine’s terrific cause, please get onto the following link and follow the prompts - https://www.gofundme.com/east-loddon-cancer-awareness-week Every dollar, cent and raising of awareness counts! Termite Works To Begin Shortly Building works to address the termite damage in the VCE room, Home Economics room and College Canteen will begin later this term, with a further planning meeting to take place next Wednesday. At this stage, these works will begin as soon as possible upon the completion of Year 12 exams in November. Mental Health Week Activities A huge thankyou is extended to all who have been involved in Mental Health Week activities this week, which has been largely lead by Mrs Twigg and our terrific wellbeing team. Lunchtime activities were a hoot on Tuesday and the morning ‘hands-on’ activity yesterday was a terrific way in which to start the day. Many thanks are ex-tended to the East Loddon Lions for their terrific bacon and egg muffins on Tuesday morning for our ‘Sunshine Breakfast’ also. What a terrific way in which to start off our term! Respectful Relationships - Emotional Literacy Focus During reading time next Wednesday all students from Years 5 – 12 will participate in a brief discussion and activity around Emotional Literacy. Students in Prep to Year 4 will focus on this in their Friday Assembly time of the same week. Emotional Literacy can be defined as the ability to understand ourselves and other people. It includes the ability to understand, express and manage our own emotions, build empathy and to respond appropriately to the emotions of others. Building a large vocabulary for emotions helps to increase emotional literacy and build self-awareness and empathy for others. First Aid Course For Students and Community Members – Running From The College Murray Mallee Training will be running a First Aid Course at our College on Tuesday 26th November for interested students and community members. Participants will need to ensure that they have a USI number, and the course will cost $105- per participant. Please have a think about whether you would like to take part in this course, as names will be requested shortly. Participants will also need to complete a booklet and associated forms prior to the course. Hats This Term For All It has been great to see that the huge majority of our students have been wearing their hats each day this week. All staff and students are to wear hats for the entirety of term 4, with students required to ensure that these are green bucket hats, and not baseball style caps. Hats are available to purchase in the College office for those who do not have one. Informing The College Of Student Absences It would be appreciated if all families could endeavour to inform the College Office of student absences in a timely manner. This can be done in person, via the telephone or electronically. When doing so electronically, please either use the College Skoolbag App or email the College on the school email account rather than via personal staff email accounts. The College email is – [email protected] I hope you have a great week! Steven Leed College Principal

P-6 Leading Literacy Course

Recently, Sarah Clare and Jackson Clayton have been undertaking a P-6

Leading Literacy course through the Bastow Institute. The goal of the

course is to improve the quality and consistency of our

literacy program across the entire school. So far they have

investigated evidence based ways to improve reading and writing.

They have also been working closely with our school’s literacy team to

make a plan for how we move forward for 2019 and beyond.

The school is now considering the introduction

of a ‘Reader’s Notebook’ to encourage students to actively think about what they are reading.

The evidence suggests that this will help them to dig deeper when reflecting on books and

other texts.

Sarah and Jackson will continue with their training for the rest of this year. They are looking

forward to bringing ideas from the course back into the school community. If you have any

questions about this course, please feel free to contact Sarah or Jackson.

It’s hard to imagine that an interstate team winning the AFL Grand Final, would make me even remotely happy, but here we are. It was such a great game to watch, unless you are a Collingwood supporter I suppose. I must be getting old because I couldn’t stop thinking of all our poor Magpie fans with their hearts being smashed. I have already debriefed with Emma but am yet to catch up with the other Hay girls. Other than that, the holidays for me were pretty quiet, I hope yours were good fun. There is a monster finish to next week with our Year 10 girls organising a ‘Shave’ for a number of staff and students. So far the girls have raised $640 from their crowdfunding page alone. They have set a target of $2000 and will smash this to bits by the rate the money is flowing in. Here’s the good news: ALL RAISED MONEY WILL BE DONATED TO BENDIGO HEALTH CANCER WARD. These wonderful people have helped our old mate Mrs Heaslip this year and unfortunately, will likely need to help more of us and our loved ones in the future. They need all the money they can get. If you can afford to donate, please visit this page https://www.gofundme.com/east-loddon-cancer-awareness-week If this is not your thing then please consider sending your kids to school in pink clothes next Wednesday, (this will cost $1 or $2 if just out of uniform and not pink) . You might also want to purchase some pink socks on Wednesday. Also you can make small donations at any time. Any kids interested in joining in on the shave by losing their hair, see Office for permission slip. Currently we have some Year 11’s, a few staff and a Prep student who are all prepared to lose a bit for the cause. A Year 6 student is also keen but yet to gain parent permission. Let’s do this for Mrs Heaslip, so we can thank the people that have helped her so much. Shaving Friday arvo if you’re interested in watching. Oh yeah, how about yesterday’s announcement. 4.5 MILLION dollars. We’ve just won Tattslotto. Thanks so much to Jacinta Allan for going in to bat for us. As Mr Leed said yesterday, we have great kids, parents and staff and now we look forward to getting some facilities that match. You don’t get any smarter by being in a fancier room, but it certainly won’t hurt.

Term 4 Please help us to keep the momentum going in terms of your child’s education. There are always individual learning goals we would like them to achieve. Remember a few weeks ago we talked about FACES (Fluency, Accuracy, Comprehension, Expression and Stamina); they remain the key elements of successful reading. To improve fluency you might ask your child to reread a page or paragraph, this time reading longer phrases rather than one word at a time. Remember that easier/ familiar books are best for this purpose. To improve comprehension ask questions about what your child is reading: From the text- Directly stated information in the text

Beyond the text- Ask your child about similar texts, viewings and experiences that they can bring to the text.

About the text- Talk about the strategies the author uses to convey a message: pictures, captions, headings,

graphs and the like.

To improve expression, model a page to them. Ask your child to read the text again adding pausing and expression.

Stamina only comes from extended periods of reading. Children are more likely to develop stamina when they engage with and enjoy the text. Eliminate distractions such as television and encourage your child to take a book to bed. Having a bedside lamp may be all the incentive they require. In Maths, encourage your child to develop automatic recall of basic number facts. This should include addition and subtraction and be extended into division and multiplica-tion. Help your child to see the relationship between the processes, for example 7+3=10 and 10-3=7/ 3x5=15 and 15÷5=3. Play board and card games to develop numeracy skills and logic. WELCOME This week we welcome Coal into Year 2 and Raeven into our Prep class. School Uniforms With warmer weather coming on, please check to ensure that the name on your child’s school tops has not faded.

Clothing is often discarded and lost; and while we endeavour to reunite clothes and owners it is only possible when

the name is clearly visible.

Respectful Relationships This coming week we are visiting lessons from the Respectful Relationships Program. Our College has as a core value RESPECT and we expect that all members of the College community (staff and students) demonstrate respect when interacting with others. Respect is valuing others, including others who are different, and treating them with the same level of decency as we would expect from others. It is particularly important that boys learn to value to respect girls at all times. The rise in domestic violence (reported) justifiably rings alarm bells across the broader community and it is important to remember that attitudes are formed when children are very young. Some attitudes last a lifetime and can be very damaging. Almost all parents in our community are doing a brilliant job of raising respectful children who will go on to be very social adults. If your child has social problems which either you or the school are concerned about, please take the initiative and organise an appointment with a child psychologist, chances are they won’t grow out of it without some support.. Deutsche Nachrichten The first week in Term 4 has been a busy week in the Deutsch Klassen. Klasse Preps have started work on the Felix und Franzi Deutsh program. Klasse 2/3 have been practising reading their Flecki Buch. Next week they will be recording the sentences they have written. Klasse 3/4 have continued working on their dioramas. Klasse 5 und 6 have been learning the song, Drei kleine Fische by Robert Metcalf (or known as the Blupp. Blupp song). This song they will perform at the German Day at the Bendigo Art Gallery excursion on Tuesday 16th Oktober. Permission forms were given out this week on Monday. Please return these by Friday so that final numbers can be finalised. This year I was unsuccessful in my three applications to help the students with the costing of the excursion. Klasse 8 are busy adding the final touches to their P-4 task activity task. Final reminder for Klasse 5 und 6 for the return of their permission forms for the German Day at the Bendigo Art Gallery on Tuesday, 16th Oktober (next Tuesday). Annette Burgstett German Co-ordinator Year 2/3 Integrated Studies-Science This week the Year 2/3 class worked on making predictions, observing and recording results while working in co-operative groups. They added H2O to their soil samples, which they had collected as part of their ‘Soil and Rock’ samples which they had collected from around their homes. The group lead-ers made sure their group members all helped out. These observations were performed outside for obvious reasons (it didn’t matter when H2O spilt on the concrete. Our Outdoor classroom needs your help!

We are in the process of setting up an outdoor classroom/study space for our VCE students to utilise in the lead up to their ex-ams. We are looking for donations of beanbags and/or beans, cushions and small outdoor furniture that could be used to assist us in creating a motivating outdoor space. If you have anything at home taking up space, we’d love it if you could consider do-nating it to the school.

Senior School Newsletter Thursday 11th of October

Year 12 last day The count down is on, actually I think it has been on most of the year. But it is officially on for the gorgeous Year 12’s and their last school day. This is scheduled for Wednesday 24th of October. Notices were distributed today regarding this. Year 12 students, parents/guardians and staff are invited to a morning tea in the Year 12 room at recess time on this day eg 10:40-11:10am. Mr Wilkinson kindly extends recess for us on this day, allowing a little more time for cake and celebrations. We just ask that staff and families bring a plate of something nice to share. Year 12 students will have the opportunity to have some (safe) fun in the morning as students arrive, before tidying up their mess/stuff and preparing for morning tea. Following morning tea Year 12 students will be transported to Bendigo for some Ten Pin Bowling and Grilled. The cost of transport will be covered by the College, however, students will need to bring money for lunch on the day and ten pin bowling. If you have any questions please let me know. Year 9 & 10 Outdoor Ed Camp By the time you are reading this, we will be (hopefully) somewhere near Ryan’s Den at the completion of Day 2 of our hike along the Great Ocean Road Trail. For many of the students, they have not visited the Otway's before. I was able to check out the location just last week while on holidays. It is beautiful and certainly plenty of beach scenes and koala’s. When students were asked to describe on Monday how they were feeling pre camp, the de-scribing words they selected ranged from nervous to confident to keen to good. More details next week from our students. Pictured below are some of the photos I was able to take last week on my reconnaissance trip. Estimated return time on Friday 12th October is 5:30-6pm. Students will have the opportunity to contact parents/guardians from the school mobile Friday afternoon. Year 10 Subject offerings for VCE 2019 Year 9 students (of 2018) that will soon become Year 10 students of 2019 will have the opportunity to attend a presentation from myself on Wednesday 17th of October during part of reading time and period 1. We have recently finalised the blockings for Year 11 and Year 12 students of 2019. This now allows us to offer certain subjects to our future Year 10 students. It is anticipated that subjects on offer range from VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies, VCE Food Studies and VCE Mathematics (to be confirmed which stream of Mathematics). If parents would like to attend or receive more information about this please let me know when I’m back from camp. Road Safety Thanks again to parents/guardians for supporting our Road Safety Program from Keys Please Y10, Fit2Drive Y11 and Looking After Your Mates Y12. It was great to see our students getting involved and taking on board such valuable information. Unfortunately due to some technical glitches we were unable to view all of the Year 12 presentation. For our Y11 students Ruth their presenter was able to find the humour in some of their strategies to keep safe on the road but also help our students to deal with potential peer pressure and driver scenarios. Students have each made a personal plan of actions they are comfortable with in such situations. I encourage parents/guardians to ask their son/daughter about this. Soph on Work Experience During the holidays I had the pleasure of visiting Soph H at her second Work Experience placement. She looked so professional when I arrived at St John of God, I just thought she was one of the nurses. Soph returned with a fantastic report. Well done, Soph! Sarah Byrne Senior Sub-School Leader

LOTS OF FUN CELEBRATING MENTAL HEALTH WEEK .

Term 4 started with lots of fun and laughs at East Loddon College as we celebrated

Mental Health Week and World Mental Health Day.

We thank the East Loddon Lions Club, the Loddon Healthy Minds Network and our Brek-

kie Program Volunteers for providing a delicious “Sunshine Breakfast” of yummy egg

and bacon muffins as well as some of the usual goodies on Tuesday morning.

This was followed by some really fun and entertaining Tabloid Sports at lunchtime

with Mr Ferguson,Year 5, the Senior School, SRC members and the Wellbeing Team.

The ‘Egg Throw n Catch’ was won by Riley W and Jaxon H who were amazing with their skills

and the distance that they could do this without breaking their egg!

Houses were awarded for points from their teams and participation. The overall winners were Long and Shaw who could not be separated on 80 points each. Followed by Laird on 70, then Evans on 50 points. It was a fantastic effort by all of the students who participated.

On World Mental Health Day all students were given a ‘Wellbeing Hand’ and information on the 5 WAYS TO WELLBEING. They brainstormed one aspect of mental health for each digit (finger) and used this information to decorate their ‘hands’, which Mrs Twigg placed on the canteen win-dows for everyone to view.
