FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESKDear Friends,

As I write my last note from the "Presidents desk", I do so with mixed emotions ! It's been a fabulous year for me, I hope I was able to live up to your expectations and more importantly was able to do Justice to my role as President of a Rotary club and MOST importantly was able to uphold the traditions and values of this wonderful club.

During the course of this journey, I have cemented my relations with some wonderful friends and made some new ones too. I have said on many occasions during the year and will say so again, to all future incoming leaders, "Brace the opportunity " and you will have one of the most memorable and wonderful years of your life. Yes there is a lot of work to do, but done earnestly, it is extremely rewarding.

As most of you know, the district thanksgiving has gone by, I am delighted to let you know that your club got fantastic recognition, it was recognized amongst the top clubs of the district. It was heartening to hear "SOUTHEND's " name being called out again and again and again.......

I have tried to perform my responsibility to the best of by ability, in doing so if I have in any way hurt anybody unintentionally...... please do excuse me......

I sign off wishing Incoming Presedent Rtn. Garima the very best for her incoming year.....

Warmly

Rtn. Atul Raheja President 2016-17

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW Non-Attendance Rules

The Standard Rotary Club Constitution specifies three conditions under which a Rotarian’s membership will automatically be terminated for non-attendance. These circumstances are: failure to attend or make up four consecutive club meetings, failure to attend or make up 60 percent of club meetings each six months, and failure to attend at least 30 percent of the meetings of one’s own club in each six-month period. Under any of these three cases, a member will lose Rotary membership unless the club board (directors) has previously consented to excuse such failure for good and sufficient reason. To some individuals, these rules may seem unusually rigid. However, being present at club meetings is one of the basic obligations a member accepts upon joining a Rotary club. The constitutional rules merely emphasize that Rotary is a participatory organization that highly values regular attendance. When a member is absent the entire club loses the personal association with that member. Being present at a club meeting is considered a vital part of the operation and success of every Rotary club. For any Rotarian to miss four consecutive meetings, or disregard the other attendance requirements, should be considered tantamount to the submission of one’s resignation from the club. When a club terminates a member for non-attendance, it is simply an acceptance of a resignation and not a punitive action by the club officers. All Rotarians know the consequences of non-attendance, so it clearly becomes a conscious decision by a Rotarian to withdraw from the club when he or she fails to fulfill the attendance requirements.

BREAKFAST WITH DIFFERENCE ON 25TH JUNE

As the year draws to a close we witnessed yet another first in the history of Southend. In contrast to tradition, where only the Directors were privy to this glorious moment, this year The Charter and the Bylaws of our Club were handed over by outgoing President Rtn. Atul Raheja to our Incoming President Rtn Garima Misra in the presence of 69 Southenders at Hotel Vasant Continental. The event was coupled with another Social Services Project with the visually impaired. A cheque of Rs 51000/- was handed to Humanity Foundation, a small group of people who support Visually Challenged Childrens' education selflessly. After a huge breakfast over fellowship it was a pleasure to celebrate the anniversary of Rtn Garima & Lord Aakash Misra and also the birthdays' of PP Rtn Ajay Narain and R'ann Reena Chadha with a cake cutting ceremony .The morning was later followed by a Joint Board Meeting of the outgoing and the incoming teams. At the MDC it was decided to induct R'ann Surveen Sindhu as Rtn Surveen Sindhu. Kudos Surveen... you are indeed an asset to our club.It was a highly successful event with a seamless blend of Fellowship , Community Service and Official Club Activities. Special Thanks to Chairperson R'ann Manmit Chaudhry for such an innovative , well planned and executed event.

The Professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see & asked the students “How much do you think this glass weighs?”

’50gms!’….. ’100gms!’ …..’125 gms’ …the students answered.

“I really don’t know unless I weigh it,” said the professor, “but, my question is:

What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?”…. .

‘Nothing- …..the students said.

‘Ok what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?’ the professor asked.

‘Your arm would begin to ache’ said one of the student

“You’re right, now what would happen if I held it for a day?”

“Your arm could go numb; you might have severe muscle stress & paralysis & have to go to hospital for sure!”

….. Ventured another student & all the students laughed

“Very good.

But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?” Asked the professor.

‘No’…. Was the answer.

“Then what caused the arm ache & the muscle stress?”

The students were puzzled.

“What should I do now to come out of pain?” asked professor again.

“Put the glass down!” said one of the students

“Exactly!” said the professor.

life’s problems are something like this.

Hold it for a few minutes in your head & they seem OK.

Think of them for a long time & they begin to ache.

Hold it even longer & they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able to do anything.

It’s important to think of the challenges or problems in your life, But EVEN MORE IMPORTANT is to ‘PUT THEM DOWN’ at the end of every day before you go to sleep…

That way, you are not stressed, you wake up every day fresh &strong & can handle any issue, any challenge that comes your way!
