“Today’s first reading describes the offering of first fruits the people of Israel where to
present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt and the gift of the promised
land. Is my offering at today’s Mass an appropriate response to the many blessings
the Lord has given me?

“You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the
netherworld shall not prevail against it.”
Matthew 16:18
Scientists and theologians sometimes work the same cases. A friend of
mine finished his graduate studies and did a year of postdoctoral work in the
northwest. He’s a moral theologian specializing in medical ethics. He’s no
armchair coach, looking at life from the sidelines: Not long after ordination, he
spent time as a hospital chaplain, and he’s done night-shift ride-alongs with
police officers, learning about human nature from people on the street as well
as from those in the squad cars. He also worked in a facility that house
criminal offenders undergoing psychiatric treatment, spending hours in group
sessions led by the prison’s psychiatrist. At times they discussed inner voices
they had followed, voices that had led them to commit crimes. My friend
remembered vividly one conversation with the doctor after a meeting. My
friend said, “These men hear voices. The founder of my religious order heard
voices. From a psychiatric point of view, how do we know whether to lock
people up or call them saints?” The psychiatrist had a simple response: “It
depends what the voices tell them.” If you murder another human being, we’ll
lock you up. If you sell everything you own and give the money to the poor,
we’ll call you a saint. A lot of people may be challenged to follow your
example. I’m intrigued that my friend still tells this story decades after the
fact. What message is worth spreading? What insight is worth handing on year
after year? Real wisdoms-truths tested against real human experience-shows
where the voice of God has resonated in human hearts.

Is it a sin to break the law?
Dear Padre,
If you break a government law, is it automatically a sin? It’s illegal to use fireworks
in my city, but every year I do it anyway. Should I mention this at reconciliation?
Joe
Dear Joe,
Strictly speaking, to break a government law does not automatically consti-
tute the definition of sin, so it needn’t be mentioned in the sacrament of recon-
ciliation. By definition, sin damages (or, with grave sin, destroys) communion
with God and the Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1472). Some ac-
tions may not be objectively destructive to our relationship with God and the
Church-and therefore are not sinful-but they may affect others. Church mem-
bers are part of society, which depends on its citizens to abide by the laws. Saint
Paul encouraged everyone to obey the authorities, for all authority that exists is
established by God (see Romans 13:1-7). Not all sins are equally offensive to
God; similarly, not all civil laws are equal in their gravity. To knowingly travel a
few miles over the posted speed limit isn’t the same as intentionally setting a
forest fire in a posted area. The danger is in thinking one’s actions are without
consequence. Sensible civil laws are designed to ensure the safety and well-
being of citizens, and many municipalities outlaw fireworks because of the haz-
ards they pose. When any civil law is broken for mere self-indulgence or when
breaking the law places others at ris, the act has the potential of constituting the
definition of sin. In that case, it would rightfully warrant reconciliation.
The Padre
