Congratulations to proud grandparents Don & Penny Johnson On the Birth of their 4th Grandbaby Grant Edward Johnson As part of preparing for commitment Sunday, I came across a bunch of excellent resources and ideas about following God’s will in our lives by giving generously from our many blessings. I’d like to share one of those today and I hope you will take the time to delve deeper into this important discipline. Below you will find a summary/excerpt from a lecture entitled Seven Foundational Biblical Stewardship Principles Gary Hoag, Vice President of Advancement for Denver Seminary, at a training. Included in these comments are both Bible verses and references to some excellent books, so you can study this important topic yourselves. 1. God owns everything (Psalm 24:1, cf.; Leviticus 25:23 and 1 Chronicles 29:11). Keeping this in mind, we are encouraged to meditate on Richard Foster's words: "God's ownership of everything also changes the kind of question we ask in giving. Rather than, 'How much of my money should I give to God?' We learn to ask, 'How much of God's money should I keep for myself?' The difference between these two questions is of monumental proportions." (from Foster’s book, The Challenge of the Disciplined Life) 2. People are stewards of gifts and goods. (Romans 12:6a; 1 Chronicles 29:14). Considering this, we keep in mind the words of Larry Burkett: "We are merely stewards of God's property while we are on earth. He can choose to entrust us with as much or as little as He desires, but in no case will we ever take ownership." (from Burkett’s book, The Word on Finances) So Patrick H. McNamara states, "Each of us is entrusted with a particular set of created gifts and good things we have been given in this life. Each of us is responsible for how these gifts are used; we will someday have to give our own account. The stewardship ideal urges each Christian disciple to acknowledge what he or she has received by being ready to return these gifts to God through Jesus Christ. Return is expressed in willingness to use one's time, talent and treasure to advance the Kingdom of God." (from McNamara’s book, More than Money: Portraits of Transformative Stewardship) 3. Gifts are to be used to edify the Church and glorify God. (1 Peter 4:10; James 1:17; 1 Corinthians 12:7). Notice, as Gary Hoag pointed out, that it is as if we are the gift in these texts. 4. Goods are to be given, shared, and enjoyed. (Exodus 25:2, cf.; Malachi 3:10; 2 Corinthians 9:6; Romans 12:13). Martin Luther's words are poignant here: "I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all. But whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess." And John Calvin: "There cannot be a safer rule, nor a stronger exhortation to the observance of it, than when we are taught that all the endowments which we possess are divine deposits entrusted to us for the very purpose of being distributed for the good of our neighbor." 5. Leaders model and teach contentment and generosity. (1 Chronicles 29:1-20; Phillipians 4:11; Hebrews 13:5; 1 Timothy 3:2-3, 6:6-9, 17-19; Titus 1:11; 1 Peter 5:2; 1 Timothy 6:17-19). Consider the words of C.S. Lewis here: "He who has God and everything has no more than he who has God alone." 6. Practicing stewardship leads to spiritual growth. (2 Corinthians 8:7; 2 Timothy 1:6). Here Martin Luther again speaks to us: "There are three conversions necessary: the conversion of the heart, mind and the purse." And Wesley K. Willmer: "Stewardship is God's way of raising people, not man's way of raising money." Gary Hoag adds, "God does a work in each of our lives when we learn and practice stewardship principles." 7. Generosity flows from a transformed heart. (2 Corinthians 8:5; 2 Corinthians 9:8; Luke 21:3-4; 2 Corinthians 8:1-5; Matthew 14:13-21; 15:32-39; Mark 6:32-44; 8:1-10; Luke 9:10b-17; John 6:1-15). Rev. On the Birth of their 4th

Grandbaby

Grant Edward Johnson

As part of preparing for commitment Sunday, I came across a bunch of excellent resources and ideas about following

God’s will in our lives by giving generously from our many blessings. I’d like to share one of those today and I hope

you will take the time to delve deeper into this important discipline.

Below you will find a summary/excerpt from a lecture entitled Seven Foundational Biblical Stewardship Principles

Gary Hoag, Vice President of Advancement for Denver Seminary, at a training. Included in these comments are both

Bible verses and references to some excellent books, so you can study this important topic yourselves.

1. God owns everything (Psalm 24:1, cf.; Leviticus 25:23 and 1 Chronicles 29:11). Keeping this in mind, we are

encouraged to meditate on Richard Foster's words: "God's ownership of everything also changes the kind of question

we ask in giving. Rather than, 'How much of my money should I give to God?' We learn to ask, 'How much of God's

money should I keep for myself?' The difference between these two questions is of monumental proportions." (from

Foster’s book, The Challenge of the Disciplined Life)

2. People are stewards of gifts and goods. (Romans 12:6a; 1 Chronicles 29:14). Considering this, we keep in

mind the words of Larry Burkett: "We are merely stewards of God's property while we are on earth. He can choose to

entrust us with as much or as little as He desires, but in no case will we ever take ownership." (from Burkett’s book,

The Word on Finances) So Patrick H. McNamara states, "Each of us is entrusted with a particular set of created gifts

and good things we have been given in this life. Each of us is responsible for how these gifts are used; we will

someday have to give our own account. The stewardship ideal urges each Christian disciple to acknowledge what he or

she has received by being ready to return these gifts to God through Jesus Christ. Return is expressed in willingness to

use one's time, talent and treasure to advance the Kingdom of God." (from McNamara’s book, More than Money:

Portraits of Transformative Stewardship)

(Exodus 25:2, cf.; Malachi 3:10; 2 Corinthians 9:6; Romans

12:13). Martin Luther's words are poignant here: "I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all. But

whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess." And John Calvin: "There cannot be a safer rule, nor a

stronger exhortation to the observance of it, than when we are taught that all the endowments which we possess are

divine deposits entrusted to us for the very purpose of being distributed for the good of our neighbor."

5. Leaders model and teach contentment and generosity. (1 Chronicles 29:1-20; Phillipians 4:11; Hebrews 13:5; 1

Timothy 3:2-3, 6:6-9, 17-19; Titus 1:11; 1 Peter 5:2; 1 Timothy 6:17-19). Consider the words of C.S. Lewis here: "He

who has God and everything has no more than he who has God alone."

6. Practicing stewardship leads to spiritual growth. (2 Corinthians 8:7; 2 Timothy 1:6). Here Martin Luther again

speaks to us: "There are three conversions necessary: the conversion of the heart, mind and the purse." And Wesley K.

Willmer: "Stewardship is God's way of raising people, not man's way of raising money." Gary Hoag adds, "God does a

work in each of our lives when we learn and practice stewardship principles."

7. Generosity flows from a transformed heart. (2 Corinthians 8:5; 2 Corinthians 9:8; Luke 21:3-4; 2 Corinthians

8:1-5; Matthew 14:13-21; 15:32-39; Mark 6:32-44; 8:1-10; Luke 9:10b-17; John 6:1-15).

Southminster families (53 people) had a glorious Mother’s Day weekend in the hill county

at Mo-Ranch. The rain stayed away so we were able to play baseball and sand volleyball,

swim in the rapids, fly down the slide, canoe, hike, eat s’mores and sing at the bonfire, and

just relax and visit with each other. Bagpipes greeted us Sunday morning on our way to

worship at scenic Chapel on the Hill. The best part of the weekend was seeing our

Southminster family bonding together, both kids and adults. We would love to have more

of our Southminster families experiencing this weekend with us. Watch for pictures in the

Narthex and mark your calendar for next year on May 9-11 and join us!

Designated Associate Pastor Search .

The Designated Associate Pastor Nominating Committee (DAPNC) has been working

diligently over the past 5 months to find the best candidate to fill a much needed position

at our church. At the congregational meeting on June 9th they will be presenting the can-

didate that they have chosen for your approval. This Pastor position will be responsible

for the Youth Ministry, Christian Education and the church's ministry to families with

children elementary school age and below. Together with Kent and our amazing group of

church volunteers, they will set long term goals as well as short term programs for devel-

oping these ministries of the church. Please save this date and plan to come to this meet-

ing, be a part of the decision and celebrate this exciting time in the life of our church.

Food Pantry Needs - EFBHNM is extremely grateful to the Coalition Congregations who have helped re-stock the shelves by holding

food drives and donating non-perishable items to the Food Pantry. In addition to non-perishable items, families coming to EFBHNM

for food receive dairy, produce, meat, and, when available, dish & clothes washing detergents. Through our association with the

Houston Food Bank & Wholesale Grocers we are able to purchase many of these items for much, much less than retail (even Walmart

& Sam’s). Here is a list of the most needed perishable food items and our cost:

- Eggs (case of 15 dozen) $ 4.37 - Ham (case of 20 – 2 lbs/ea) $ 7.60 - Juice (case of 8 – 64 oz/ea) $ 2.96 - Oil (case of 8 – 48 oz/ea) $

3.68- Milk (1 gallon) $ 2.67- Apples (case of 138) $29.00- Onions (50 lbs) $21.00- Dish Liquid (12 – 25 oz/ea) $10.15

Please consider making a monetary donation to help cover the cost of the perishable food items that are provided to Fort Bend families

in need. We can make your dollar go further! Donation may be made on line at www.humanneeds.org or by mailing to P.O. Box 1611,

Stafford, TX 77497-1611. Thank you for your support…it’s a blessing to others!
