FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

THE HEALING POWER OF FORGIVENESS…

The Gospel for today challenges to live in the joy of love by forgiving one another

as the Lord Himself forgives us. He came to the world to forgive sins by giving His

life to save us from hate and death. The Bible often proclaims the merciful for-

giveness of God Who is slow to anger and rich in kindness. Jesus taught us that we

will be forgiven as we forgive others. In the first reading we are reminded that anger

and vengeance are hateful things that sinners hug tight which calls on the Lord to

remember their sins and take vengeance. Forgiveness heals things and frees us from

hate and vengeance.

MARIAN REFLECTION

Listen: “Our Lady had to be empty before she could be full of grace. She had to declare that she was the handmaid of the Lord before God could fill her. So also we must be empty of all pride, all jealousy, of all selfishness before God can fill us with his love.”

~St. Teresa of Calcutta

Ponder: Have I emptied myself before the Lord? What are some things that get in the way of my relationship with God?

Respond: Lord God, fill me with your grace.

Beneficial Contributions of the Elderly Pope John Paul II

There is an urgent need to recover a correct perspective on life as a whole. The correct perspective is that of eternity, for which life at every phase is a meaningful preparation. Old age too has a proper role to play in this process of gradual maturing along the path to eternity. And this process of maturing cannot but benefit the larger society of which the elderly person is a part. Elderly people help us to see human affairs with greater wisdom, because life's vicissitudes have brought them knowledge and maturity. They are the guardians of our collective memory, and thus the privileged interpreters of that body of ideals and common values which support and guide life in society. To exclude the elderly is in a sense to deny the past, in which the present is firmly rooted, in the name of a modernity without memory. Precisely because of their mature experience, the elderly are able to offer young people precious advice and guidance. In view of all this, the signs of human frailty which are clearly connected with advanced age become a summons to the mutual dependence and indispensable solidarity which link the different generations, inasmuch as every person needs others and draws enrichment from the gifts and charisms of all. Here the reflections of a poet dear to me are pertinent: 'It is not the future alone which is eternal, not the future alone!...Indeed, the past too is the age of eternity: Nothing which has already happened will come back today as it was... It will return, but as Idea; it will not return as itself'.

WISDOM OF THE DAY

Family Connection

Theme: We are called to forgive others as Jesus for-gives us.

Breaking Open the Word

Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Gospel

Step One: Listen to the Word

When you hear the Gospel proclaimed today, what words or phrases really strike you? What lingers in your memory from this reading?

Step Two: Look into Your Life

Question for Children: Jesus says we should forgive from our heart. When did you ask forgiveness of someone you hurt? How did you feel?

Question for Youth: Jesus challenges us to forgive. Who needs your forgiveness? From whom do you need to ask forgiveness?

Question for Adults: Jesus tells us to forgive seventy times seven, which means al-ways and forever. Name a time this past week when you forgave someone. Name, too, a time when you accepted an-other person’s forgiveness.

The theme throughout today’s readings from Holy Scripture has to do with for-giveness. We must always appreciate that forgiveness is a two way street. We need to seek forgiveness as all of us are likely to do. However, forgiveness is also something we need to grant to oth-ers. Some scholars consider Matthew’s Chapter 18 from where our Gospel Reading comes today as perhaps among His most personal teachings to His disciples and others as spiritual leaders. There is no question that the Lord is in the process of pre-paring His followers for the time when they (we) must continue His Kingdom without His physical presence. He is trying to build up the sense of fellowship and cohesion among His flock. Thus, He focuses on how to build up cooperation and uni-ty in those who work to build His Kingdom. He makes it clear that for us to accomplish that requires forgiveness and reconciliation. The lesson for us is quite basic: we need to know and appreciate and understand the grace of Jesus and respond by learning how to forgive our sisters and brothers (all sisters and brothers in our Christian and Catholic fellowship). Christ always forgives us if we come to Him with a hum-ble and repentant heart, and He expects the same from us. We need to forgive others just as we are forgiven. As Je-sus warns us in today’s Gospel: “So will my heavenly Fa-ther do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother (and sister) from your heart.”

MONASTERY COME & SEE DAYS

GOD IS CALLING YOU! A vocation – marriage, priesthood, religious life, etc. - is a call to love and every baptized person has one! But perhaps you’re feeling a tug to give your heart to Jesus exclusively, sitting at His feet like Mary Magdalene, or perhaps you’ve wondered what life is like as a cloistered nun? If you’re a single, Catholic woman between the ages of 18-38 years, we invite you to spend a day of dis-cernment with the Cloistered Dominican Nuns of Corpus Christi Monastery in Menlo Park, CA. Catch a glimpse of the same hidden life of love that has been lived at the heart of the Church and the Domini-can Order since Saint Dominic founded the first com-munity of Dominican nuns in 1206. Contact Sister Joseph Marie, O.P., at [email protected], or visit our website at http://nunsmenlo.org/discernment-days/ to learn more and to register for one of our upcoming Come and See Days: Sat-urday, October 21, 2017; and Saturday January 20, 2018.
