ZION/NOIZNovember, 2016

Zion is a gathering of God’s people dedicated to Learning, Sharing & Spreading the Love and Word of God.___________________________________________________________________________

From the Pastor….“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” Five times in the book of psalms, a psalm begins with these exact words encouraging people of faith to cry out to God in gratitude. The psalms remind us to be joyful people with thankful hearts, not only for who God has been, but also for who God is now and has promised to be for us in the future. That the steadfast love of God endures forever means God’s care for each of us is constant. The steadfast love of God for you is the same today as it was last Tuesday, and the same that it will be a year from now. Our God watches over us and protects us, giving us his blessings. And we give God our gratitude in response. Each time we gather around the Lord’s Table we lift up our hearts in prayer and say, “It is right to give him thanks and praise.” It is good to offer our prayers of thanksgiving to God. One of the names for the Lord’s Supper is the Eucharist, which comes from the Greek word meaning to give thanks. When we eat and drink of Christ’s body and blood, it is good for us to thank God for his death, which brings us life. It is good for us to take time to pause, to remember and be grateful. Especially as many of us will gather around a table with friends and family later this month to feast and give thanks. We are used to thinking of gratitude and thanks, bounty and the blessings of family and friends during the fall as the calendar flips to November.

The first Sunday of the month of November is All Saints, where we remember those who have come before us in the body of Christ. All Saints is a time

to remember and give thanks, especially for our loved ones in the body of Christ and those who have recently died. After this, we have one final “green” Sunday of the year. This period that began in June on Pentecost has been a long season of growing in faith and understanding as we have read the gospel of Luke, learning what it means to follow Jesus Christ. The final Sunday of the month of November is the first Sunday of Advent, the beginning of a new season in the church and a new liturgical year working our way through the gospel of Matthew. On the 27th, we begin Advent, a four-week season of the church to prepare us to celebrate the birth of Christ. In between is one more holiday or holy day in the church year, in this month that is full of feasting and celebration. The third Sunday of the month is Christ the King Sunday. In between this long season of green and growth and the hopeful waiting of Advent is Christ the King. The readings for Christ the King Sunday point us to Jesus on the cross. It can strike us as odd hearing these words of suffering and death right before we are waiting for his birth. But they are important for us to hear while our attention and our focus are on giving thanks. We are giving thanks for the God who came to die to set us free from death and sin. We are giving thanks for the goodness and steadfast love of God, shown to us most clearly in the death of Christ on the cross for us and for our salvation.

Congregational Christmas CardEach year someone from Zion draws a Christmas “card” that is put out in the narthex for everyone to sign. We are still looking for that someone this year. Is it you? If interested, please either call the church office or talk to Pastor Phil.

Christmas Angel 2015Once again we have the opportunity to make Christmas happier and brighter for local families that are struggling to provide for their children.

On two Sundays – November 13th and 20th – there will be an opportunity to choose who you would like to shop for; boy or girl, young or old, and what you would like to buy; clothing or toy. Then, let the shopping begin!

The deadline to return the gifts to church is Sunday, December 11th.

Start thinking about making this important outreach of Zion part of your holiday traditions.

Congregational MeetingsThere are two important Congregational Meetings coming up:

1. Sunday, November 6th – The agenda for this meeting is the architect’s proposal of Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Chancel Renovation project.

2. Sunday, December 4th – The Annual Congregational Meting. The agenda of this meeting will include the 2107 budget and election of council members.

You won’t want to miss them!

It's a Feather War....Teresa Turkey Vs. Tom Turkey!!  Proceeds will be used to buy turkeys for the Frewsburg Food Pantry's Family Christmas Food Baskets (they are in need of 50+ turkeys)

How it works:     On November 13, 20, and 27, girls/women will buy "feathers" for Teresa Turkey and boys/men will buy feathers for Tom Turkey. The turkey with the most feathers "wins."

You can pay 10 cents to buy a feather for either turkey.....$1.00 gets you 10 turkey feathers!!

But there's a catch:    For 25 cents you can REMOVE a feather from the other team’s turkey....$1.00 gets 4 feathers removed from the other team’s turkey!!

**See Jen Tuller or Shelby Surrena to buy feathers for the turkeys.

May the Best Turkey Team Win!!!Many Thanks for continuing to help support the Frewsburg Food Pantry and our neighbors in need. God Bless.

Steward of the MonthThe Stewardship Committee is pleased to announce that Linda Trostle is the honoree for November, 2016.

Since Linda and her husband, Dennis, joined Zion in 1977, she has been a steadfast choir member for more than 35 years.

Linda has served as church treasurer two separate times for a total of at least 12 years.

Early as a church member Linda taught Sunday School for at least five years. At about the same time she also served on the Altar Guild.  However, she relinquished her place on the Guild, when she began her many, time-consuming duties as church treasurer.

Linda has served as offering counter for at least seven years.  Her financial and decision-making-skills have been used to work with the finance committee in preparation of yearly budgets for Zion.

With a warm smile and calm disposition Linda has been and continues to be a true steward of the Gifts that God has bestowed upon her.  We, fellow members of Zion, have been blessed to have one of God's servants among us.

Outreach MinistryAdvent is upon us. This is the time of year we prepare for Jesus birthday. At Zion, we are preparing for Advent. Soon the interactive nativity will start. As we travel with Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, I ask you to follow a daily journey with your advent calendar. You can pick yours up in the narthex soon. We also ask that you share a calendar with someone special – a friend, classmate, college student, neighbor, grandchild, grandparent, shut-in, just anyone you want to share the Good News with.

Along with the calendars, we have an Advent study. This is a weekly study. Please read and meditate on it.

How can Zion make an impact on world hunger? Beginning in Advent, you will find a small bank in each pew. Bring in your change to fill the banks over the next few months. The monies will provide farm animals to families around the world. Look for coloring books and bulletin inserts to share and color. World hunger affects many people around the world, including the United States, even here in Frewsburg.

We are looking for a way Zion can help with the parade on Saturday, November 26th. Any ideas, contact Sherry Rogers @ 569-3261. God Bless.

Nursery ScheduleWe love seeing our children in worship. However, if needed, nursery care is provided throughout the service for children of non-school age.

Just sign your name by the date you want, and then on that Sunday, place the money in a pew envelope and mark it “flowers” or “bulletins” and put it in the offering plate. Someone from the Altar Guild will be calling you for the flower information, and Wendy Norrod, the church secretary, will call you for bulletin information.

Please be sure that if you signed up to sponsor flowers or bulletins in 2016 that you remembered to pay for them. If you are not sure if you paid for them or not, you can call the church office and we can look it up. The church depends on this money to offset the cost of the flowers and bulletins.

Holiday Care Packages for Our Troops

Dear Members of Zion, We are collecting items again this year to help with the Blue Star Mothers Christmas collection for care packages for our troops. These care packages will be sent to American soldiers who are serving overseas and won’t be home with their loved ones this holiday season. Please take this chance to help brighten the holidays for the men and women who serve us, and are protecting us in places of danger around the world. To let them know that their efforts and their sacrifices are appreciated, and supported from home. This is a great opportunity for you to send our Military members some Christian love from home

Page 5: From the Pastor - Zion Lutheran Church Web view**See Jen Tuller or Shelby Surrena to buy feathers for the turkeys. ... word search, Sudoku, ... Pastor John Klatt,

and to thank those who have left their families, and are making sacrifices every day for each one of us. Below is a list of suggested items that you can donate to add to the box of collections, and there will also be a list in the Narthex.

Collections will be accepted from now until Sunday November 27th. We will be packing your donations and sending them out on Saturday, December 3rd from Fluvanna Community Church to reach our military in time for Christmas. Thank you for helping us remember our troops and for helping our military serving so far from home this holiday season, to feel your love and support!!

We would also like to include cards and letters of thanks and support. We have received many thank you notes from military members who have received cards and letters in their care packages, and they say that these items lift their moral more than anything else. What better thing can we do for those serving us away from home this holiday season, but to thank them for their service and their sacrifices? This Thanksgiving Day, as you are gathered around the table with your loved ones and you are thanking our Gracious Lord for all of your blessings, would you consider passing cards around the table so everyone can write a note of thanks and encouragement to a deployed military member? It’s something you can do that will bring so much joy to them. We will include your cards and letters in our care packages, on the very top, so they are the first thing they see.

The Blue Star Mothers would like to thank Zion, for your continued support. With your help this past year, we were able to send a total of 748 care packages to our deployed military. God’s Blessings were felt every time packages were sent, as each and every time as we gathered our collections and our donations for postage, we had just enough of both. GOD IS GOOD…ALL THE TIME!!!

If you know of any men or women who are currently deployed, please send me their name and address. You may email it to me at [email protected] or call me at home at 569-4543, or my cell 499-6897 and these military members will be added to our list. I would like to personally thank my wonderful church family for your continuing support in

helping our Blue Star Mother chapter to serve those who serve us!

May God Bless you all! Susan Rowley,Along with all the mothers and members of NY Chapter 4, Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.

Honduras Mission Project Auction, Chinese Auction

and DinnerThe Honduras Mission project will again hold the

annual Honduras Auction and Chinese Auction on Sunday, November 6th, from 6:00-8:30 PM. The event will be held at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Route

430, Bemus Point. Everyone is welcome.

David Brown from Westfield is the auctioneer. Many businesses and individuals have donated gift certificates, gift baskets and other items for the auction. Viewing begins at 5:00 PM.

The auction supports the ongoing program in the small village of la Villa de San Francisco in Honduras. St. Timothy and many other local churches support 23 children and their families year round.

A mission team went to Honduras in February, 2016, worked with the children, assessed the needs of the program, provided medical check-ups and taught the mothers new skills. The next mission trip will be in April of 2017. Many mission team members will be at the auction to tell people about this project.

There is also a light dinner of pulled pork sandwiches or chili, salad, dessert, and beverage for $6 from 5:00-6:00 PM. The auction will begin at 6:00 PM.

This auction is one of the major fundraisers for the Honduras Mission Project, which has been going on for over 20 years. New sponsors are always needed for the children, since we support the year round weekly program, plus give protein based foods to the family once a month.

Don’t forget that Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 6th – so set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night!

What if Jesus Came?Would you have to change your clothes

before you let him in?Or hide some magazines, and put the Bible

where they’d been?Would you hide your worldly music and put

some hymn books out?Could you let Jesus walk right in, or would

you rush about?

And I wonder – if the Savior spent a day or two with you,

Would you go right on doing the things you always do?

Would you go right on saying the things you always say?

Or would life for you continue as it does from day to day?

Would you take Jesus with you

everywhere you go?Or would you maybe change your plans

for just a day or so?Would you be glad to have him meet your

closest friends?Or would you hope they stay away, until

his visit ends?

Would you be glad to have him stay forever on and on?

Or would you sigh with great relief when he at last was gone?

It might be interesting to know the things that you would do,

If Jesus came in person, to spend some time with you.

Thank you to all members who returned their Estimate of Giving Cards on Oct. 23rd or returned them shortly thereafter.  Your willingness to step out by faith with others here at Zion concerning your giving in the future is very much appreciated.  Your commitment enables us to share the good news of the Gospel and to minister to people in Jesus' name. Your financial support and the investment of your time and talents is vital to the mission here at Zion.  As we continue to serve the Lord, may God bless your life and all that you do in the days ahead.
