Thornton OPEN FROM THE PASTOR From the Pastor At our last church conference our congregation voted to study the possibility of Bel Air Baptist, First Baptist Marshall, and our congregation coming together to form a new church to make disciples of Jesus Christ in Marshall and beyond. This is a time of great potential, and a time that deserves ongoing prayer. Our leadership team, made up of the pastors of the three churches, Wallace Watkins as facilitator, Randy Babbin as an adviser, and three members from each church will meet for the first time as an officially authorized group on June 1. We will work hard to communicate with you the process of decision-making and to receive your input on this proposal. I am asking you to enter into a dedicated time of prayer for this process, our churches, and our leadership team. I am also asking, if you are willing and able, to enter into a time of fasting during the month of June. The purpose of this request is to help us focus our prayer. The extent and specifics of what the fast will look like I will leave up to you. Some ideas are fasting from one meal a day, fasting from one day each week for the month, or fasting from a specific item of food or drink such as coffee or soda. If your health needs make this difficult to do, you could abstain from a normal activity and devote that time instead to prayer. "The fasting guide provided by Campus Crusade for Christ includes a lot of helpful information and suggestions. It can be found at www.cru.org/train-and-grow/spiritual- growth/fasting/personal-guide-to-fasting." The most important thing is to seek the will of God in this time. Richard Foster writes: "More than any other discipline, fasting reveals the things that control us." Throughout the study of the possibility of forming a new church, we want all of the churches to be controlled solely by the love of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:14). Thank you for considering participating in this special time of prayer and seeking God's will for the future of our congregations!
