CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

It’s amazing to think that it is now 50 years since Gary Hocking lost his life in practice for the Natal Grand Prix at Westmead. David “Squack” Harris organised a tribute gathering at Westmead in June and we are happy to include Gavin Foster’s article on this really special occasion.

The club night on the 24th September, being a public holiday, was not as well attended as usual, but those there benefited by a great talk about his overseas trip by Rick Lewis, and then a fascinating chat by Candelaria and Herman Zapp about their around the world trip in a 1928 Graham-Paige. Their visuals and book Spark your Dream were well received, and they donated a copy of the book to our library.

We had participation in the Rallysport Spotti Woodhead memorial rally this last Sunday which is reported on in this issue, and the next big event is the Fairest Cape on the 12th and 13th of November – good luck to all participants.

Let’s get out there and ride!

SEPTEMBER CLUB NIGHT

Andy opened the meeting and asked those present to stand in a few moments silence, remembering VMC member Jens Brehm who had recently passed away.

After a review of recent happenings, Jon Lewis was presented with a book “The Norton Story” as a prize for getting the two recent crossword puzzles correct. Pierre Cronje then brought members up to date regarding preparations for the 2013 “JD”.

Ric Lewis then gave a talk on his recent visit to the UK and the opportunity of visiting the Black Country Museum, the “National” in Birmingham and, of course, the Sammy Miller Museum. He said these institutions were magnificent and that he had also been impressed by the volunteerism of people who were so friendly and enthusiastic in their assistance at these museums and other places of interest.

In touring around, Ric was absorbed in following the development of transport through the ages with the roads, canals, bridges and railways still being in pristine condition. In particularly good condition were Cathedrals, public buildings and infrastructure where the evident quality of masonry work, up to 300 years old, displayed those great skills of long ago. An exception to this was the limestone statuary that is showing the effects of age but is receiving appropriate restoration work.

We were then treated to an animated and fascinating talk by Candelaria and Herman Zapp on their world travels in a vintage car. As newlyweds, they had set out from their Argentina home in a 1928 Graham-Paige sedan (“simplicity was important!”) with a dream of driving through to Alaska.

That they succeeded in their first dream is evidenced by them now being in their 13th year on the road in their Graham-Paige and in that time having produced four children!

They are paying their way by selling their framed paintings, a pictorial calendar, postcards and their newly-published book on all these travels. They have had most generous assistance from old car clubs and enthusiasts wherever they have been. The Zapp’s stay in South Africa will

be about four months long and they are endeavouring to visit as many old car clubs as possible.

Gary Hocking Tribute DayGavin Foster writes:

Gary Hocking had an exceptional career competing on two wheels and four. In his short few years racing motorcycle Grands Prix he started in 38 world championship races, won 19 and took podiums in all but five. He won two World Championships and came second in three more, and there's not much doubt that he'd have had a great future in Formula One if the ball had bounced differently at Westmead. But he has not been forgotten.

Squack Harris organised a 50-year tribute to his friend, Gary, at VMac's Roadhouse in Westmead in June. About 300 people turned out, including over 50 of Sox's old Rhodesian friends and fellow competitors. Alan and Dave Harris, Ken Robas, Ophie Howard, Tommy Robinson, Nobby Clark (all the way from New York), Alex McDonald, Royce Love (son of John) all attended. Others like Jim Redman, Kork Ballington, Paddy Driver and Michelle (Mike) Duff who could not make it, sent written tributes.

Two racing comrades from the Golden Age of Rhodesian Racing. Gary Hocking and Nobby Clark photographed in about 1960.

Six-times motorcycle World Champion Jim Redman put Gary's success in perspective in his e-mailed tribute. "At Ago's birthday party last Saturday at Silverstone we were discussing who was the best ever racer - Mike Hailwood was given this accolade. I got some votes along with Valentino and Ago, but Sox was mentioned with Saarinen as possibly the best, although each of them had too short a career to qualify. He's gone but not forgotten."

The last word on Hocking, though, we'll leave to John Surtees, the man whom the young Rhodesian could possibly have beaten to become the first World Champion on two wheels and four if he'd been a little luckier.

Writing in his 1963 autobiography, Speed, Surtees says the following. "During my last two years on two wheels, there is no doubt that one of the hardest riders I encountered was young Gary Hocking who was later to become World Champion. He had what is essential - drive, and a knowledge of what he wanted, which was success. His sudden retirement from racing, and the reason he gave, rather mystified me, as it seemed rather out of character with the hard-bitten approach he normally had to racing."

Thanks to MV Agusta South Africa and East Coast Motorcycles, who helped subsidise the costs of the Gary Hocking Tribute Day.

John Austin Williams better known as JAWS has done a most amazing job of the DJ web site and the latest addition is a wonderful series of articles by the late great cartoonist Jock Leyden on DJ characters. It makes for most fascinating reading. Here is the link to this and I urge you to visit it. www.djrun.co.za/Personalities.html

In addition to the website the interest is from as far afield as the UK and Europe so the event is certainly going to be of great importance to the old motorcycling scene.

Next year sees the first down run for many years and mimics the first ever race in that respect which is why it is being done that way. We look forward to three days (echoes of Woodstock??) of great vintage motorcycling and hopefully a few high profile entrants as well.

It ain't two bob anymore! – The rising cost of rallying.

Whenever the Fairest Cape (FC) comes up it always a question for me – can I afford it? – can I justify the cost and indeed can I afford the time off work? OK scratch the last one as being a freelance okie I generally can, but as for the former – the answer is probably NO.

SO – what are the options in order to cut costs – and indeed are there any? The main cost is getting body and bike there and back. Costs can be cut here by sharing with up to three blokes, and cutting out an overnight stop – but it quite freaky to do it one day. I would imagine that the average is two up with an overnight stop.

The Train?? Ever tried that? I have and it wasn’t a good experience, and fraught with incompetent people who didn’t know what their own rules and regs were, so in my opinion – scratch that.

Buy a bike and leave it in Cape Town then fly down with Kululua Moola? – yes, an option and for a couple of FC’s I did that, however you need a few

days before the rally to clean off rust and fettle the bike which cuts down on the cost saving – plus the ride to Goudini is a bit of a pain.

Recently I swapped my 1969 Trident for a 1980 Guzzi le Mans 11. The Guzzi was in Ceres, the Trident in Jhb – how to do it?? We thought of meeting half way and abandoned that one as logistically difficult – what about a bike transporting outfit I thought. So - into some research.

Guess what – there are several outfits that cater for this market. Can be in an enclosed van, with insurance and door to door nog al. Good but quite pricey, so natch, being part Scottish I went down the ladder. How about a nine (yes NINE) bike trailer also door to door with slightly dodgy insurance, and indeed, how about a price of R1500 all in (and a possibility of further discount if trailer carries the full nine bikes). Door to Door – Ceres to Jhb – sure – no problem.

Done deal and the bikes were transported as promised, albeit the Guzzi arrived with eight BM’s that had been left in Cape Town by their owners who had ridden down and couldn’t bear the thought of riding back.So let’s explore this a little further (and PLEASE – all figures are estimates and subject to audit – this is just an EXERCISE after all)

Going down to Goudini Spa by say an SUV towing a trailer:Petrol for SUV R1680Accommodation en route R400Meals en route 100Tolls (Trolls?) 140Sundry (Paying off cops for speeding?) R100Total R2420

Going down to Goudini Spa by nine bike Trailer Company:Bike Transport R1500 (will reduce with numbers) Flight on Kulula (assume advance booking etc) R653Total R2153(Only problem is you have to get from the airport to Goudini – friendly Cape Town club member matey perhaps??)The bikes would be delivered to Goudini on the day before the rally and would be collected on the day after.

Not a lot in it I hear you say – a miserly R267, but the fact is that the trailer rates WILL reduce with numbers, and could end up as low as R1200 PLUS none of the hassle of that long drive.

Just a thought, and let’s see if this can stimulate other ideas for cutting costs (erm - Club buy a nine bike trailer perhaps), as I believe that without some lateral thinking it’s going to be a real problem for some of us to do the far distant events.

The Spotti Woodhead Memorial Rally

The slightly controversial Rallysport Club Spotti Woodhead SARRA rally came and went – and how did it go? Well, let’s try and find out.

Firstly, it’s quite a thing. Far more cars than bikes and several different classes. 57 cars in fact and 14 bikes - all of which were in the Z1 to Z4 class (wait a minute, there was one lonely MGB in this class too – guess he missed his way!)Secondly, it’s different, and yet it’s the same. The rally sheets are similar, but have odd abbreviations like SOS, EOS and ETD. There were also pretty pictures, but we were told to ignore these, as trying to ride, look at the route schedule and hold up a picture is kinda hard on a bike. The other strange thing was that if you are in the 60kkph group – you go at 60 kph. Everywhere! Around corners, around roundabouts, through stop street, right at T junctions – OK you get the picture! You get used to it after a while, but pushing the trusty E10 V twin up passes at 60kph ain't really in its repertoire, and going down the other side at 100kph to make up time is strictly for the birds!

The venue? The “Teaspoon and Tankard” – well it looked like it had seen better days and was fair busting at the seams to accommodate all the vehicles and people. Must have been a good two hundred of them, and I can tell you the bar and the loos were drowning (pardon the pun) under the demand. But in any event paperwork was done, scrutineering the same, and we were all ready to go – albeit only at 10h00 which is kinda late if you want to be home for lunch.

Being number 62, I was the third bike away. Immediately there were problems. Number 60 disappeared in the direction of Randfontein instead of Hekpoort as shown on the route schedule, and number 63 returned to the start with a missing float bowl. Otherwise things were going OK.

Page 9: FROM THE PANTHER’S LAIR - Vintage Motorcycle …vintagemotorcycleclub.co.za/KICK START 2012 NOVEM… · Web viewBMW: Wanted for BMW R50/2: CENTRE STAND and CRASH BAR. Please call

The route was great, the weather played ball – overcast and cool and NOT hot and sunny as forecast and marshals’ all over the place. I counted 18 in total and maybe they were more. The V twin was purring and I was really enjoying my new seat cover that wifey made.

At the fuel stop we were all there less the previously mentioned culprits. But when we left the fuel stop - disaster number two! Brian Hough and the venerable passenger in sidecar, Pierre Cronje, found their Harley combo was brakeless, so they decided to call it quits as riding an outfit like that sans brakes is no fun in anyone’s book.

The long way back via Derby and other unpronounceable places was uneventful and we all got back to the Tsp. and Tankard at around three (or at least I did as I was last in line). Some good stories, quite a lot of beer, but gave the mangy burgers and cold looking pasta a miss as trying hard to maintain my almost perfect figure.

The result came out and, guess what, folks. The rally machine was at it again. Top of the bikers section? Gavin (how does he do it?) Walton with an incredible 87 penalties. Second Rick Lewis on his flashy Kwaka 2000hp tree puller, and third Kevin Walton on a lovely VHA (no prizes for guessing what this is)

All in all an enjoyable event and one that I will do, and will recommend to others - next year.

The SAVVA Dating RecordsBringing them up to date

In view of the impending legislation providing for regular Road Testing of motor vehicles and the related relaxation that will be given to Historic vehicles, we have initiated a program to equip members to qualify for their motorcycles to be exempted.

It is clear that the possession of a SAVVA Dating Certificate that specifies the licenced machine and the name of its registered owner will be the minimum requirement to get this exemption. As so many Dated vehicles have changed hands or have had their licence numbers changed, the SAVVA dating records need to be updated in order that the necessary Dating Certificates can be re-issued.

One way of doing this is to download the form “Change of Ownership” from the SAVVA website, fill it in (dated bikes only!) and get it to Roly Tilman, by hand or by Fax.

We suggest that in future every advert is inserted for two months but will be renewed on request.
