ISSUE NO 201514 - 12 May 2015 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Hello to all in the St Brigid's community. Week 4 Term 2 This Sunday is the Ascension of the Lord. This Sunday we arrive at the event the disciples weren’t really expecting; the ascension of the Lord. In the First Reading, again from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear the opening few paragraphs of Luke’s second book. He describes again the events which occurred between the Resurrection and the Ascension. He also paints a vivid description of the ascension and restates Jesus’ final commandment ‘You will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem, but throughout Judea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth’ In the Second Reading St Paul is urging the community in Ephesus, above all else, ‘to preserve the unity of the spirit that binds you together’. Paul recognizes that there is great diversity amongst the followers so he urges them to use their diversity of gifts to build up the body of Christ. These beautiful words in this reading are as relevant today as when they were originally written. In the Gospel, Mark also highlights the two key events of the Ascension; the commissioning of the disciples and the departure of Jesus. Mark however gives much more attention to the former than the latter. As a whole the reading can challenge us to use our own gifts to build up the body of Christ (the Church) and to preserve the fundamental unity amongst the faithful while at the same time recognising and making allowance for diversity. What’s on over the following week Assembly prayer this week was led by the 1A class whilst 1B will lead next week’s. The Years 3 and 5 students will participate in the NAPLAN testing regime this week. Our Prep teachers will be completing the data input for the Australian Early Developmental Census (AEDC) this week. Interschool sport will continue for Years 5 and 6 this Friday. St Brigid’s will be represented at the Family Funanza at Country Paradise Gardens this Saturday bet ween 10 am and 4 pm. The children will be issued with Active School Travel (AST) Passports this week. The passports will be used for parents to record each AST journey to help children to qualify for a reward. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hello to all in the St Brigid's community.

Week 4 Term 2

This Sunday is the Ascension of the Lord.

This Sunday we arrive at the event the disciples weren’t really expecting; the ascension of the Lord. In the First

Reading, again from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear the opening few paragraphs of Luke’s second book. He

describes again the events which occurred between the Resurrection and the Ascension. He also paints a vivid

description of the ascension and restates Jesus’ final commandment ‘You will be my witnesses not only in

Jerusalem, but throughout Judea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth’

In the Second Reading St Paul is urging the community in Ephesus, above all else, ‘to preserve the unity of the

spirit that binds you together’. Paul recognizes that there is great diversity amongst the followers so he urges

them to use their diversity of gifts to build up the body of Christ. These beautiful words in this reading are as

relevant today as when they were originally written.

In the Gospel, Mark also highlights the two key events of the Ascension; the commissioning of the disciples and

the departure of Jesus. Mark however gives much more attention to the former than the latter.

As a whole the reading can challenge us to use our own gifts to build up the body of Christ (the Church) and to

preserve the fundamental unity amongst the faithful while at the same time recognising and making allowance

for diversity.

Year 6 rooms.

The monthly Parents and Friends’ Association will be held next Wednesday, May 20th

commencing at 7pm.

Positive Behaviour 4 Learning

This week we will be expanding on Rule #1: Respect for Others at transition times. For some children transition

times from one activity to another can be very challenging. This week we are concentrating on correct behaviour

whilst in the various toilet blocks around the school.

Thanks to the members of the Parents and Friends’ Association who organised and conducted the Mothers’ Day

stall last week.

Congratulations to all the students who competed in the cross country events last week under ideal weather

conditions. A very big thank you to Mrs Messenger for preparing the children for the races and conducting the

day so successfully. Thanks also to the many staff members who assisted with the races.

I welcome Mr Eronie Vekaci to St Brigid’s who will be filling the groundsman position for the next two weeks while

Mr Colin enjoys some annual leave.

St Brigid's Cross Country Carnival

We were fortunate to receive beautiful weather for the school's recent cross country carnival. Congratulations to

those students who actively participated and gave of their best. Watching many of the students run the course

with a big smile on their face was wonderful to see and a good reminder that being active outdoors leads to

happy, healthy children. Congratulations to the winners of the respective age groupings who were presented with

their medals at morning assemblies last week.

Visible Learning

Learning continues to be an important focus right across our school. Through making it clear what ‘effective

learners’ do, we are building students capacity to be effective learners. This in turn improves student learning

outcomes.

Page 5: FROM THE PRINCIPAL NO 201514...ISSUE NO 201514 - 12 May 2015 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Hello to all in the St Brigid's community. Week 4 Term 2 This Sunday is the Ascension of the Lord. This

Students who are effective learners actively seek challenges, are resilient and persistent. To support this

at home parents could:

Parents could discuss challenges they have faced during the week and how they overcame them.

Discuss with students what it means to be persistent and not giving up when you face a challenge.

Learning to ride a bike or use a skateboard could be a good example.

Encourage students to discuss some of the academic or social challenges they feel they are facing at

school and how they can work through them with your help.

ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL

This week each teacher will hand out a passport card for any child who would like to take part in travelling

actively each day. There are rewards for those children who participate. We just need a parent’s initials on each

day. These will come home on Tuesday.

We will then award each class on a Tuesday afternoon. Each “travel active” child will receive a prize o f their

choosing. This will commence next week. The children will be told when to collect their prize. The children just

need to make sure they have their passport card at school each Tuesday, starting week 5, Tuesday May 19th.

Travelling actively includes riding a bike or scooter, walking all the way to school or part of the way, coming by

bus, train or tram and carpooling.

We thank families who can travel actively regularly. It helps the environment and is good exercise as well.

Next Friday May 22nd

is National Walk to School Day. We encourage all families to travel actively this day. More

details next week about this.

In Maths we are continuing to discuss the 2d shapes rectangle, circle, triangle and square. We are trying to find

many different 2d shapes in the environment. Maybe you could do this with your children at home too.

In Religion we are continuing the Creation story in the Bible. The fertile question is “Why did God create the world

for us?” Our learning intention is for the children to appreciate the beauty of Creation and for them to know that

God created the world for us to be happy, and to respect and care for each other and the world.

In Geography the children are continuing to discuss their homes being a special place for them. We will discuss

other special places and why these places are important in the children’s lives. This week in History we would

like you to complete and return the “Grow and Change” booklet with your child.

Friday, 22nd

May is going to be a wonderful day for the children. We are celebrating Under 8’s day, starting with

the Character Parade, followed by a Liturgy and many many fun activities. The theme is “Voices of Children”

….look, listen, hear and respond. We hope you can come along to share in this special day.

Year 1 News

1B children will lead prayer on assembly next week. All Grade One children did a great job participating in Cross-

country last Wednesday. They all got out there and ran their hardest. Congratulations to all who had a positive

attitude and made the event so enjoyable. Well Done! The month of May is National Reading Month.

We hope all the mother’s had a very special day on Sunday for Mother’s Day. The children were very excited to

make the bracelets. We know you will cherish them forever along with any gifts bought from the Mother’s Day

stall, from the shops or that were made with tender loving care for you. MAY GOD BLESS ALL MOTHER’S AND

KEEP THEM SAFE.

This is a special month to celebrate literature and reading. Grade One children are becoming more and more

aware of literature, authors and characters in books. Start planning and discussing with your child the character

he or she would like to dress-up as for the character parade in a few weeks on Friday the 22nd

of May. During

library lessons the children looked at a website design to promote reading. You are encouraged to go on the

Year 2 News

We are continuing our study of the History of Hinze Dam.

On the 22nd

April St Brigid’s Year 2 students travelled to Hinze Dam for the Hinze History Heroes Program. As

History Heroes students labelled and arranged photos of Hinze Dam in a timeline from past to the present and

walked across the dam wall to find the” mango tree” planted by the Hinze family over 100 years ago. They learnt

how the need for increased water supply and flood protection saw the height of the Hinze Dam wall increase at

Stage Two in 1989 and then again at Stage Three, completed in 2011, when most of the students were three

years old! After watching the water flow over the spillway the students become Code Breakers, searching for our

Catchment Creatures for clues to crack the Seqwater Code, Source, Store and Supply which describes

Seqwater’s role in providing drinking water for our community.

The children were fantastic in their efforts in the St. Brigid's cross country last Wednedsay. Congratulations to all

of the children especially those who placed in this event. It was good to see the children encouraging each other

and spurring each other to finish.

We have started our reading groups. If you would like to assist, please complete the manditory Student

Protection Documentation at the office.

Last week the children took home counting to 1000 by 1's, 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's. Please put this in a spot that is

visible to the children so as they can practise this often.

Have a great week!

Last Thursday Cheryl from GCCC Local Studies Library, Southport presented a slideshow of fascinating ‘then’

and ‘now’ pictures of the Gold Coast. The children marvelled over the pictures and the images sparked lots of

conversations. One of the purposes of this visit was to introduce the children to our History unit. This term we will

be doing a lot of comparing to discover which features on the Gold Coast have changed and which have stayed

the same.

Memorable Moments:

My favourite part of last week was when Cheryl from GCCC library showed us how Elephant Rock used to look a

long time ago. I also liked the cross country because we got to exercise. Vanessa 3A

My favourite part of last week was when we saw an old picture of the Gold Coast Highway in Surfers Paradise

with trees, bushes and no buildings and then we saw a recent picture of the same road but now there are lots of

buildings everywhere like the Q1. Charlotte 3B

has an early night’s sleep, a healthy, wholesome breakfast and a bottle of water on each day. We look forward to

our end of NAPLAN party on Thursday at second break. Thanks to the 3A and 3B children who will be supplying

the food for this particular party.

Year 4 News

We hope all Mothers, Grandmothers and Carers had a wonderful Mother’s Day.

The students are continuing their reading of Nim’s Island and are preparing for an oral retell of a paragraph. It

would boost their confidence if they could practice at home using expression and making eye contact before they

record it at school.

The first step in the seed germination activity has taken place as students have planted their seed and placed it in

the “plant nursery”. They will begin to take photos and notes to see how the seed begins to grow, measuring

growth along the way.

May 2015 in the sports of Touch Football and Soccer. This would be ideal skill development for OzTag, Rugby

League and for those students who participate in the St Brigid's Team on a Saturday morning at Gold Coast

Touch Association. Other students will also benefit from skill development and general improvement of fitness

levels.

Year 6 News

Year 6 are well into the swing of Term 2 with the start of their first assignment on a famous Aussie legend of their

choice. They will be writing a mini biography about their person following all the steps of the writing process

including; research, first draft, peer conference and final draft. The students showed their leadership skills at the

Cross Country Carnival last Wednesday. Not only did the majority set a good example by participating, even

when they found the course challenging, they also helped the younger students by running with them or shouting

encouragement from the side.
