The Town is continually looking at ways we can reduce our impact on the natural environment. We have a number of environmentally sustainable initiatives to ensure nature can be enjoyed by the community for many years to come. To conserve water, reticulation systems are centrally controlled by a smart phone or computer. Gardens have been mulched and wetting agents applied. With the help of University of Western Australia research, we have improved our soils to reduce water usage by street trees and turf areas. At the Claremont Aquatic Centre, the pool is naturally heated through a geothermal system. The artesian water comes out of the ground at 43 degrees Celsius, keeping the pool at a warm 28 degrees in winter. This method of heating saves 330 tonnes of greenhouse gases annually. The aquatic centre also participates in the Water Corporation’s Waterwise Program. As part of this program we have implemented water savings measures such as low flow shower heads, aerators on basin taps, less lawn areas, more native plants and shade covers to reduce summer water loss. Our council office Number One Claremont is also energy efficient, with passive solar design, LED lighting and roof mounted solar panels. The panels generate between 30% and 60% of the office’s energy needs, reducing our electricity charges and taking advantage of free energy from the sun. This is a carbon dioxide reduction of 65 tonnes per year. Energy efficient LED street lights will be installed in the upgraded Davies Road car park allowing energy savings of more than 70%. Finally, we continue to encourage people to leave their cars at home and seek alternate transport. In early 2017 a new shared path along Lake Claremont will be installed, improving access between Strickland and Gloucester streets. Jock Barker, Mayor *To register for these activities, please call Congratulations to Anna Louise Richardson for winning the 2016 Claremont Art Awards with her piece Still Waiting for Dad. The winning entry stood out for its innovative use of media, while highlighting the environmental challenges associated with feral species such as foxes. Second prize winner was Andy Quilty (pictured) for Uncle Fred but not Uncle Fred #2 and third prize Sue Hibbert for Mosman Bay at Dawn. Jennifer Mellor with Old Theater Lane – Claremont won the Claremont Local Category and the People’s Choice winner was Kirsten Hocking with A Mother’s Love. The Art Awards were exhibited at Claremont Quarter from 20 to 28 August and the winning entry has joined the Town’s existing art collection where it will be displayed for the community to enjoy. FROM THE MAYOR’S DESKSpring has sprung and our parks and gardens are teeming with new life, wildflowers are in bloom and ducklings and cygnets are exploring their new world.
