1 Benefice newsletter for Tortworth, Tytherington, Rockhampton, Cromhall and Falfield Volume 7 Issue 8 August 2010 From the Local Ministry Team “What shall I write for the front cover of 5 Alive?” I said as I was sitting with some friends the other night. I was inundated- “Fishing; fishers of men and all that”. “Bellringing; working as a team”. “Gardening; the problem of drought”…. I have a very helpful group of friends and you can tell what they like doing! Isn’t it funny how we like to offer suggestions and yet, is it only men who don’t like to ask for help? I hate asking for directions. If I start cooking something (a rather rare occurrence) I like to do my own thing and find it hard to follow a recipe. If we’re in a strange town I’ll never ask the way to somewhere. And yet we love to be asked and, hopefully, thanked for our ideas or advice. I had a job once which largely involved people asking me for advice. I loved it. Whether people took my advice was probably dubious but I liked to think I was helping. It seems to me that we all love to be asked because it shows that the person doing the asking values the thoughts of those being asked. Our house is on a favourite footpath route which has been published by one of the newspapers with a fairly vague map. I was watching three la- dies outside our gate last week looking very confused. I thought I ought to rescue them and they said this was the second time they’d been to our “Dream Cottage” but they’d love to find their way back to their car! I felt really good that I could offer some useful directions. Maybe we should be prepared to ask more often, which seems a bit wrong when I thought the Bible always said “it is better to give than receive”. I’m sure people who know the Bible better than me will come up with another quote. Mind you, it’s not always easy. I was filling up the car at Charfield garage one day when a man drew up with his family and asked me the way to Bournemouth! Have a good holiday and if you need advice don’t be afraid to ask! From the Local Ministry Team

“What shall I write for the front cover of 5 Alive?” I said as I was sitting with some friends the other night.

If I start cooking something (a rather rare occurrence) I like to do my own thing and find it hard to follow a

recipe.

I was watching three la-dies outside our gate last week looking very confused.

Visiting Visiting is part of the Church’s Ministry. If you would like a visit from someone from church, please call the benefice office and we will do our best to arrange it.

MIDWEEK EUCHARIST SERVICES: These have now recommenced with Tytherington and Tortworth alternating each week. Please see the weekly bulle-tin for details.

The Readers are glad to bring Holy Communion to the home for anyone unable to get to church: Please ring Gill on 01454 261296 if you would like one of the team to come to you.

IF YOU ARE GOING INTO OR ARE IN HOSPITAL…….

You can help to make sure that the church team, can respond as you would like us to when you are ill. It’s impor-tant that if you are admitted to hospital, you do three things: 1. Make sure somebody tells one of the team (Hilary, a Reader, or any member of the congregation) that you are going to hospital – and ask them to make sure the message is passed on! 2. Make it plain to hospital staff whether (or not!) you would like a visit. This means that when someone rings up, they won’t have to spend their time saying ‘hang on, I’ll just go and ask him/her….’ 3. Make it plain what sort of visit you would like: would you prefer a friend from church, or one of the visiting team, or would you particularly like a clergy visit? If you want to be certain of a private, one-to-one chat, don’t be afraid to ask the staff if they will allow your minister to come outside normal visiting hours, so that they don’t take precious time and space from your family.

FOR ALL BENEFICE BUSINESS PLEASE RING: 01454 260096

Please use this unless you wish to speak to your own Warden or PCC Secretary

ALL Benefice emails should be addressed to: [email protected]

The office will be open from 9.30am until 1.00pm every Thursday morning, unless previously stated in the weekly Newsletter.

All phone messages and emails will be dealt with on a Thursday, but if an urgent answer is required call Gill Williams on 01454 261296 regarding funeral arrange-ments.

If you would like to make an appointment to speak to Rev. Jenny, then she will generally be available on Thursday afternoons at the Office. Please make ap-pointments through the Office, unless you see her per-sonally at a service.

Read 5 Alive Online

Remember that 5 Alive is available online at www.falfield.org.uk (Falfield Village Website) and on www.Cromhall.com where it should be found at the beginning of each month.

You may find this particularly useful if your copy of the magazine is delivered late for some reason.

Fascinating Rhythm, the all female close harmony singing group will be performing at Thornbury Library on Saturday 7th Au-gust 11 – 11.30. No ticket required just come along and be entertained!

TORTWORTH PARISH MEETING

The next Tortworth Parish Meeting is on Tues-day 7th September at 7.30pm at The Tortworth Estate Office. All parishioners are welcome to attend. Robert Killen, Acting Clerk ([email protected] or 01454260268)

Early next year Patrick, our loyal volunteer who prints 5 Alive, will be unavailable to help us. Without his efforts there would be no magazine each month so if you feel able to give us some assis-tance, perhaps sharing the task with someone else, please con-tact Ann Greenhalgh on 01454 294200 or email [email protected]

It would be helpful to introduce someone to the system in good time, SO DON’T DELAY, CONTACT ANN TODAY!!

90th Celebrations at Tytherington WI

On Monday 6th September, Tytherington WI will cele-

brate its 90th anniversary with an evening get-together in the Village Hall. Available records suggest that the WI was first formed on 1st September 1920. Meet-ings were suspended on 8th February 1940 for the duration of World War II and then resumed on 20th April 1946. Meetings have been held every month since then. Today WI members continue to support village activities such as the May Day Fayre and the Gymkhana, as well as en-joying two or three coach trips each year to various attractions. If any past members would like to join us, together with their partners, for an evening of reminiscence on 6th September, they would be very welcome. Please contact either Maureen on 01454 416325 or Pam on 01454 417833 to re-serve a place. The event will begin at 6.00pm and tickets will cost £5 to include a cold buffet.

We look forward to see-ing you there!

Christian Aid Week Collection 2010

Christian Aid Week 2010 focused on the work of one of its partners in Nairobi, Kenya, Maji na Ufanisi (MNU) (whose name means ‘water and development’ in Swahili) in two very different slums: Kiambiu and Matopeni.

There was heartfelt thanks from MNU’s Executive Director, Edward Kairu, who said, “With your support, we are empowering people to improve their own lives, to speak up for their rights and to take practical steps to reduce illness and ensure they can live with dignity.

“We work incredibly hard to bring the vision of an end to poverty into being. I was deeply moved by all your efforts to raise money in Christian Aid Week. It is genu-inely changing lives here. I see it every day.”

Young people like Elizabeth Waithera, Deputy Chair of Kiambiu Youth Group, which runs one of the settlement’s five water and sanitation blocks and organises rubbish collections to keep the environment clean, has already seen a transformation within Kiambiu’s young people with MNU’s support. She says the living standards of youth have improved, as well as the living standards of women and the whole community. She adds, “I am in the slum, but my mind is not in the slum.”

Dave and Beryl Constance would like to offer their thanks to everyone who gave so generously of their money and time in the local collections which this year resulted in £240.34 from Cromhall and £532.26 from Tytherington, making a total of £772.60. The completion of the gift aid section by some donors will realise another £60.42.

‘No Cold Calling’ Zones Launched in South Gloucestershire

Cold callers are being frozen out in Yate thanks to a new initiative between South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards and Avon and Somerset Police.

‘No Cold Calling Zones’ have been launched in parts of the town in a bid to help reduce doorstep crime. They have been set up by Trading Standards officers with support from police and local Neighbourhood Watch schemes.

Doorstep crime can range from rogue home improvement firms, to bogus officials and charities.

The first No Cold Calling Zones are being introduced in the Walton Heath and Ferndown areas in Yate.

No Cold Calling Zones are identified by street signs and stickers on the front doors of houses. Resi-dents are provided with advice on how to say ‘no’ to unwanted callers and also encouraged to report callers who ignore the zones to trading standards or the police.

The No Cold Calling Zones scheme does not prevent all callers. Utility services staff, registered char-ity collectors and canvassing politicians can still do so. As can traders involved in door to door selling if they have made a prior appointment.

For more information on the No Cold Calling Zones scheme, contact Charlotte Allard or Kevin Evans at South Gloucestershire Council’s Trading Standards department on 01454 864419.

URGENT APPEALFROM THE JULIAN TRUST!

Because the winter was so harsh, the Julian Trust emergency night shelter in Bristol served many more hot meals than usual, and has run very low on certain essential items. These are the most urgently required:

Also welcome are gifts of:

No other items are needed, because we have ample supplies. Please deliver to the churches for collection by the Julian Trust team. Any enquiries to Jennifer Oldershaw (01454 238501), Peggy Collett (01454 294545) or Ann Greenhalgh (01454 294200)

THANK YOU!

We could do with a few more people from our Benefice to join the rota of evening helpers at the Shelter.

We help prepare and serve an evening meal, aiming to arrive at the shelter about 8.15pm and are finished by 11 o'clock. The helpers are separated from the guests by a serving hatch, so you need not have contact with the guests if you are apprehensive. Two members of the Benefice help on alternate Friday evenings; it would make it easier to swop a rota duty if there were a few more

volunteers on the list. How about giving it a try?

Contact Jennifer Oldershaw (01454 238501), Peggy Collett (01454 294545) or Ann Greenhalgh (01454 294200) for further details.

FALFIELD WI NEWS Judy Clark welcomed everyone to our summer meeting. It was agreed that the June picnic meeting had been enjoyed by all, members having the chance to walk round the lake and gener-ally relax in pleasant surroundings. Judy thanked all those members who had helped to make the St George’s flower festi-val such a success by making cakes and serving them over the week-end. Maggie Gerrard gave us an interesting de-scription of her trip to Denman where she learnt about reflexology. She loved the course and found that everyone was friendly and welcoming. Final details were given of the trip to Salis-bury next month and there is to be a trip to ‘The Sound of Music’ in November. Judy then gave us a most interesting report on her trip to Cardiff to the NFWI AGM. Our speaker for the evening was Gill Leiper. Gill’s daughter lives in Malawi. As it has no natural resources the country is exceptionally poor and the people have very little. Gill’s daughter found the people so warm and friendly that she decided she would try and help. Therefore she set up a project called ‘Butterfly Space’. There is now a lodge where back packers can stay bringing in some money for the project. She has helped the local people improve social and health facilities – a new nursery; where 60 children were in one small room, now they have two rooms. There is space at the lodge for chil-dren to do homework using electric light. The football boys now have kit and can play against other teams. She has many ideas to continue her amazing work. Gill herself goes out fairly regularly and volunteers are always most welcome. Her talk was very moving and inspiring. Next month: Our outing to Salisbury.

42nd Tytherington Horse Show Saturday 28th August 2010

at Boyts Farm, Tytherington

******Charity Event****** Raising money for the ‘Jessie May Trust’

Last year’s show was a huge success raising lots of money for the main charity, ‘Hammer Out Brain Tumours’ and local village organisations and we are hoping that this year’s show is going to be an even bigger success. The day is not just for those with an interest in horses, there will be lots to see and do and some marvellous raffle prizes to be won, mak-ing it a great day out for the whole family. There will also be a skittles competition taking place on the day with a cash prize being handed out to the winner at the end of the day, amount to be confirmed on the day.

The show always needs more volunteers to join the committee or be helpers on the day and even if it’s just for a few hours it will be a great help. If you are able to help, either on the day for an hour or so, or in advance please contact Tim Short on 01454 419915 for more details. Schedules are available for download from www.tytheringtongymkhana.org.uk or you can send a SAE to Sally Wherry at the following address: 5 The Nurseries, Tytherington, Wotton-Under-Edge, Glos, GL12 8QP.

PLEASE NOTE: UNFORTUNATELY THERE WILL BE NO DOG SHOW THIS YEAR AS WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND ANYONE TO RUN IT.

Can you Hear Me? by Richard Churchill

If you think about international calls, I'll bet you think of long numbers and high bills. If you have relatives that live abroad, it is a real pain, especially if you also have to think about time differences.

While it has been possible to talk to someone over the internet for at least 10 years, until recently it wasn't easy. Slow connections meant call quality was poor, even getting a connection seemed to require a degree in computing, certainly not for the general user. What we want is a service that is easy to use, tells us when our friends and relatives are avail-able, it would even be nice if we could see the person we are talking to.

Funnily enough as I'm writing about it, now you can. Broadband has inspired a sudden advance in technology. Skype was the first service to allow everyone to make free calls over the internet easily and at very high quality. There are now many services competing with skype from the likes of Microsoft and Yahoo, they work in a very similar way, although of course they don't work with each other (when is technology ever that easy?).

In general these services are worked in a similar way; you add friends and colleagues to a contacts list. The contacts list allows you to see who is available, then all you have to do to make a call is click on the contacts name and press call. By clicking on additional names you can start a second call or a conference call. You can open text chat windows, useful for leaving messages or sharing website links. You can also send files to the person/people you are talking to.

There is one obvious snag in that you're stuck at your computer. So the more recent innovations have been phone sized hand sets, and software for mobile phones. The ability to call standard land line number (world wide) at very good rates, and finally to get a real phone number for your PC so you can be called from a normal phone.

While calling from your computer is not for every one, it can be invaluable if you need to talk to some one is a different country, or collaborate with one or more people over the internet.

I welcome any ideas or questions you may have, you can call 01454 616365 (ask for Richard) or email [email protected]. Visit http://yourpcguru.co.uk/articles/ for past articles and more information.

Wroclaw Poland 2010 Age Group World Championships

Firstly we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped and supported our Jazz and Cream Teas. We had a fantastic afternoon and raised £817 which a huge help in send-ing us to Poland. We left Luton Airport early on Tuesday 6th July to fly to Wroclaw with the rest of the Great Britain Team. After a wet arrival we settled into our hotel before doing our first

training session. The weather soon improved and became very hot. We spent Wednesday, Thursday and Friday training and doing our routines on the competi-tion floor. The Arena, Hala Orbitia was one of the biggest we had competed in and looked very impressive with the flags of all the different counties competing. We were competing against 8 other pairs our biggest rivals being the Russians. Saturday morning arrived the day of our first round we were 3rd on doing our balance routine which was good as it was the routine we are most comfortable with. Our parents arrived before we competed and it was nice to see them there and have their support. Our routine went well and we finished in 2nd place, 0.10 behind the Russians. On Sunday we competed our tempo routine, it also went well with our biggest move tuck to catch working well. We were through to the final on Monday in 2nd place behind the Russians. Our coach Nik took us to one side and watch the video of our routines; she showed us where to improve them for Monday and told us we could beat the Russian. Monday arrived only 6 pairs in the finals we were 4th to compete with the Russian and Ger-mans our closeted rivals going after us. We had nothing to lose and everything to gain, we competed our balance routine again. The audience clapped and cheered all though our routine, our coaches Nik and Vlad said it was the best routine they had seen us do, now we had to wait!! We watched as the Russians started to com-pete, their routine was going well we were on edge and then they fell, we couldn’t believe it, it was a long wait for their score they were 0.50 behind us just the Ger-mans to go but they couldn’t do enough. We had done it!! We were the new World Champions; it was a dream come true. Chris and Jake

Congratulations and well done, boys!!
