May 2015 Booster Meeting: Sunday, May 24 th , 3pm, SPHS Music Area Volume 43 Issue 7 Sun Prairie Band Boosters 1 Play from your heart From the High School Podium Welcome to the official “Home Stretch” It has been another eventful year in the SPHS Band Department. Thank you for all your hard work, including early morning drop offs, transportation to extra rehearsals, payment on instruments, lessons, reeds, mouthpieces, mallets, attending concerts and a host of other things that you do for your child’s involvement in music – they really appreciate it – even if they don’t always say so. Congratulations to all those students who participated in State Solo/Ensemble. Out of 30 High School Band entries 28 of them received “1” ratings. Seven of them were nominated for performer’s certificates – the highest award given at State – indicating the best of the performers heard at that site that day. Joey Rockman, Don Smith, Kayla Nelson, Chris McCafferty, Robert Rockman and Elizabeth Whalen all received this notable recognition. Wind Ensemble is working hard on their performance for the final concert. They will be performing a Wisconsin premier of a piece they helped commission entitled, “Mythical Monsters” by Roshanne Etezady. The piece will be a musical depiction of legendary monsters of the world. They will also perform “Frozen Cathedral” by John Mackey. We also hope to feature senior Saxophonist, Trevor Wells on part of John Mackey’s Soprano Saxophone concerto. The Wind Ensemble will be working with UW- Madison Wind Ensemble conductor, Scott Teeple and composer John Mackey in preparation for this upcoming concert. The Symphonic Band is working hard to prepare parts of the “Divine Comedy” as interpreted by Robert W. Smith. This piece will feature percussion throughout and paints a great musical picture of Dantes’ Inferno. The Concert Band will perform two works by composer Andrew Boyson, Jr. One of the pieces will be a Wisconsin Premier of a little known work, “Song for my Children”. It is a beautiful piece that will help you recall your earlier days with your own children. The other is a clever piece entitled, “Fantasy on a Theme by Sousa.” The concert will conclude with our seniors performing, “The Water is Wide”

Prairie View Band Room Banter Encourage your musician to practice every day. Growth happens every time they sit down to play. Ask them to share with you their goals for the day, week and month. Listen to them play often and offer whatever encouragement you can! It means the world to them to have a parent recognize their hard work! Summer school is right around the corner. We have several great offerings in the summer school catalog. Check the district summer school website and take a look at our summer concert band and jazz band. Online registration can be found on the school district website. Registration will be open until June 1st for music classes. We would also encourage you to consider a music camp this summer for your musician! Just keep them playing! We have several performances scheduled and other events in the next month or so. Here is the "short" list! Our final concert is May 12th at Prairie View. Our 6th grade will have their concert at 6:30(warm up at 6:15) and the 7th grade will play at 7:30(warm up at 6:50). We will be rehearsing for the Memorial Day parade on Saturday, May 16th from 9:00-noon at the high school. Students from the Sound of Sun Prairie will be there to march side by side with our 6th and 7th graders that are marching in the parade. We need to know if your child will not be marching in the parade ASAP! Please email one of us with that information. Memorial Day Parade, Monday, May 25th meeting at the CHUM at 9:00. When dropping off your musician, they should exit the car with only their instrument. Please leave cases and other items in the car as we will not be returning to the CHUM afterwards. The parade will go from the CHUM to Main St. to Walker Way. We will let you know where you can pick up your student afterwards. All school owned home instruments will need to be turned in by Thursday, May 28th. If you have experience playing a brass instrument, we are looking for a few volunteers to help clean brass instruments on June 9 and 10 during the day. This involves disassembling and reassembling brass instruments and lubricating all slides and valves prior to reassembly. Please contact Mrs. Sederquist if you can help out at 834-7825. Keep practicing and check that lesson schedule every week! Mrs. Sederquist and Mr. Quaglieri

Sound of Sun Prairie News! - May 2015 There’s been a lot of “newness” & excitement this year in SOSP (new staff, new fitness routines, new uniforms, over 30 new members!!). We are beginning to catch our stride - new members working to understand more of the craziness of why people do this, veterans understanding their role and how important their example is, and simply everyone getting to know each other better. If you haven’t been to observe rehearsal - come on by and check out the end of rehearsals. Preparing for Summer One of the most important aspects for students to have a successful summer is personal health. We have been encouraging proper hydration, sun protection (sunscreen & hats), and making healthy food and drink choices (water, water, water, water!!) Check Off Responsibilities As we get closer to the summer, individual student goals become more pressing. We suggest they find practice buddies (and meet some new folks!) to work on this task, physical conditioning, or anything else SOSP related. If students get behind on their responsibilities, we may ask them to come early or stay during lunch to get caught up. Staff members associated with each section will make these arrangements with students. SOSP Fitness Video – online Much thanks to Kevyn Feiner from the Prairie Athletic Club who has graciously donated his time and expertise to work with Cindy on implementing a new fitness and stretching curriculum for SOSP.
