Our next door neighbor, Bob Hapeman, turned 100 years old Saturday

and still goes dancing a couple times a week. Saturday night proved that

many of the Yacht Club members are still young at heart also “At the Hop”! The dinner crew did a fantastic job of decorating the club house

and Wolfman Jack provided great music to dance to. People seemed to

ignore the normal early SB “curfew” and danced late into the evening.

The dinner catered by The Lunch Box at Bill’s Diner in Mount Vernon,

was befitting to the event and dessert at the Dolphin Diner was Banana

Splits! Thank you to the dinner hosts Murray & Val Laidley and Dennis Largé & Susan Brown, and crew members Jack & Janet Cheetham, Bill & Brenda

Davis, Randi & Dale Freidig, Myrna Mahin, Linda Olsson, Jan & Roger Riediger and

Wolfman Jack: Jim Barrett and XERB 1570 AM station manager Linda Barrett! Trivia

fact: many listeners assumed that Wolfman Jack (Bob Smith) was African American,

though in fact he was of European descent!

Shakedown Cruise

Up next is the shakedown cruise to Anacortes April 23rd, 24th and 25th - please see attached flyer for

details.

Planning for Opening Day on May 9th is well under

way. Murray, Jim and Bud will have more infor-

mation on those events in the attached flyer.

I am happy that the Yacht Club authorized spending fund to help spruce up the Shelter Bay Community

Club House. See Murray’s article for complete

details of the election ballot results.

New Dolphin Editor Needed

On a bit of a less happy note, we are now in the position of looking for a new Dolphin Editor. Linda Barrett has decided to resign as Shelter Bay Yacht Club Dolphin Editor.

Linda was the editor for a number of years and passed it on in 2014, and then took it

back later in the year when the new editor had a conflict with her day job. We again

thank Linda for her service as Dolphin editor. So call me if you would like to take on

this important position within the Yacht Club. The Dolphin is produced with Microsoft Publisher, so knowledge of that application would be helpful. Please Email or call

[email protected] or 466-7469.

Opening Day 2015

Plans are shaping up for events for this year’s Opening Day on Saturday, May 9th. Look for-

ward to a display of dinghies on the hard and in the water. Have a unique or special dink? Or

just one to get the dog back and forth to the beach? Each and every one has a story. It’s time

to clean yours up and get it on the trailer or in the water to show us what you’ve got. We will have a cordoned off display area near the marina restrooms and slips available near the

events for those in the water.

And,… we will be bringing supplies so you can team with your dinner mates to construct and

decorate your own model boat centerpiece, and a competition to see which is “fastest”.

Call for Auction and Raffle items

The Opening Day Auction and Raffle is one of our club’s main funding events for the year. Please consider

donating gift certificates, hosted dinners for four or six, on the water experiences, boating supplies, new and

gently used equipment, safety equipment, art and crafts. Just about anything you can think of. Send me a

description of your item with a picture or photo and we will make arrangements to get it displayed. All dona-

tions are welcome.

Ballot Results

A number of Bylaw Revision Resolutions and one Spending Resolution were voted at the March Clubhouse

Dinner on March 21st. All passed, with the Bylaw Revisions meeting the 2/3 majority vote and the Spending

Resolution meeting the simple majority vote. See the Teller’s Report in this Newsletter for the details. Special thanks to Clark and Joan Scarboro, Judi Slager and Tom Rosadiuk for serving as our Voting

Supervisors and Tellers.

Rear Commodore—Jim Barrett

Spring is here and Opening Day can’t be too far away. A full day of events are planned and

this year you will have the option of coming for the wine and beer garden only for $5, and

perhaps bidding on one of those great auction items, or you can sign up for the full day’s

events for $20 and have a continental breakfast, the beer/wine garden and a great dinner.

See the flyer in this issue for full details.

Speaking of spring, remember “Spring Break” - those crazy trips, firm bodies on the beach

and way too much to drink. Now, in Shelter Bay it’s—get the lawn mower working, clean the

gutters, paint the fence, put the deck furniture out and way too much to drink. WC

reminded me the other day that being happy is a decision we each can make every day when

we get up. It works for me.

Cruising season starts with our

Shakedown Cruise to Anacortes on

April 23-25. Check out the flyer and

get registered online asap for this fun

3-day cruise!

A big thank you goes out to the

McGarrys and their crew, consisting

of the Galbraiths, Silhans and

Veselkas, for being port hosts of our

Sucia Cruise in September.

What’s in a boat name? They all come in various phrases and terms. So, I thought it fun to find out

how they came about. I’d like to do about three per

month in the month’s coming.

1. Jim and Linda Barrett’s 35’ Chris is called

“Part Two”. Jim tells me he arrived at this name by

experiencing, you might say, “Part Two” of his life. He purchased the boat to live-a-board; upon becoming

single and was, at the time, also in the media busi-

ness at the U of W. With the entertainment back-

ground, he knew there could be a “part one” and “part

two” to a movie or play. Jim felt this was “part two”

for him and why not name his boat the same. I say very clever and creative. Thanks for sharing.

2. Congrats to Tom and Teresa Sigmond on their

recent purchase of a 4588 Bayliner, pilot house,

which they’ve named: “Secret Sea”. I asked Teresa

how they arrived on the name. Recently they were

very serious about another Bayliner, and were anxious to tell everyone about it, but unfortunately

their survey found problems and squashed the

deal. So, on to the next one. This time, deciding to

keep it secret, until the purchase was final. Hence the

name: “Secret Seas” --- I like it!!

3. Bill Plummer and Jennifer Johnston own a 43’ Bayliner called the “Katlian; properly pronounced (cat-

lee-ann). The name comes from a Tlingit Indian chief,

who resided in Sitka Alaska during the1800’s, and

was well documented as being responsible for driving

out the Russians from his Native lands. Bill lived in

Sitka for 2 ½ years, while working for a local health corp., and during his stay, was proudly adopted by a

Tlingit family. In learning the history of this famous

Indian chief (“Katlian”), he felt a kinship and held the

name very close. Three boats later: 26’ Tolley, 34’

Tolley, and 43’ Bayliner all carried the name of “Katlian”. Hey Bill and Jennifer, looks like 8-9 foot-

itis. Will the next one be 51or 52 feet?

Reciprocal Program—Ree Murphy

The following are new this year: Anacortes Yacht Club and Fidalgo Yacht Club. These clubs have been

added to the Shelter Bay WEB site. So year 2015 again looks like a great year for our reciprocal program. Key to the current program is to have slips listed as available in our marina when your boat is vacant from

its slip. So please give Ree Murphy a call at 399-1906 or email [email protected] when your slip is

available. We could use slips even in the off season.

provide this dock side service by Pacific Rim in the future.
